It’s been another exceptional year at DVSA. Our student population continues to grow and we are working to support this growth through a number of initiatives.

While courses and workshops are our day-to-day focus, our special events are where we bring in the much needed additional revenue to support the School’s operations. Many people assume as a school we receive significant government funding, but our City of Hamilton grant, our only government funding, represents 6.5% of our total annual operating budget, with tuition covering 67% of our costs.

As such, events like Little Black Frame Mystery Art Night and the Annual Art Auction are essential fundraisers for us. Little Black Frame, our annual November cocktail party/mystery art night, both delighted and stunned us all by selling out in a mere 24 hours. The 49th Annual Art Auction continued the trend of breaking records in terms of the speed at which tickets sold, but also the number of artworks submitted, the number of new artists participating, artworks sold, and the funds raised. The challenge now is, with the bar so high, how do we create for our 50th auction

something that truly says “blockbuster?” It’s a good challenge!

Our other public event, Winterblooms, is more of a friend-raiser and is offered free-of-charge to the community. This annual January exhibition of art and floral displays is where we pair up our student artists and floral design students from Mohawk College’s Continuing Education program. Participation numbers for this event, presented with the Carnegie Gallery and Dundas Museum and Archives, continue to grow as friends tell friends how much fun this show can be.

Within the school there are two other gatherings that are of great significance in recognizing the contributions of those around us. In June, we took time to say thank you to our volunteers. This board-led event acknowledges the well over 300 volunteers who are a part of the auction, but also includes the volunteers for the library, children’s programs, outreach and Little Black Frame event. It feels pat to say we couldn’t do all these things without our volunteers, but it is the truth of the matter. DVSA started with volunteers and continues to this day to rely on the kindness and extraordinary

generosity of these unpaid heroes who come work with us.

We also hold an annual barbeque to gather as a board, staff, and faculty to mark the end of the school year. Hosted by the DVSA Board of Governors, we felt this year it was essential to honour the work of three former faculty who all, in their own unique ways, made extraordinary contributions to teaching while with the School. The Emily Dutton Award, named for one of our two founders and created for DVSA by local glass artist Paull Rodrigue, was presented to Marla Panko, Peter Karuna, and Colleen O’Reilly.

Looking back has been a recurring theme this year. Danielle Hughes, hired through the Summer Experience Program, spent the summer creating an archive of DVSA materials. It came in handy as Dundas Museum and Archives were busy at the same time researching their exhibition Dundas Inspired: A History of Visual Arts. The Hamilton Arts Council also took advantage of the recently re-organized materials when developing their exhibition Building Cultural Legacies which featured materials and stories from a number of cultural organizations in the Hamilton area. The project, which will launch online in November, 2019, can be found at buildingculturallegacies.ca.

2018-19 was also a year with a technology focus for DVSA. New registration software and a refreshed website have launched this school year. Students have access to a range of additional features relative to our previous software and the website includes a range of dynamic content that helps potential students discover “how we roll…” Mohawk College has also figured prominently in our development of a video channel. Working with students from the Video Production program, new online videos about the school focus on a range of art instructional tips and can be found on the DVSA YouTube channel at dvsa.ca.

Other partnerships added this year included working with PRIDE Hamilton in creating a Family Day open house here at the school for this group’s many families. Another group we’ve been working with is the Eva Rothwell Centre. You can read more about this initiative inside the pages of this report. While many people are surprised to discover how much outreach we undertake at DVSA, we recognize there can be a lot of barriers, perceived and otherwise, with an art school and that it is both an honour and privilege to provide programs with other groups, across the city.

After 7 years, we have just recently wrapped up the RBC Student Visual Art Award program. Funded through

the Royal Bank of Canada and DVSA scholarship funds, this program, in partnership with the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board, distributed over 220 awards to emerging student artists in the community. The award provided the opportunity for each student to have work shown in an annual exhibition, a free class at DVSA, and a certificate of achievement. We are proud of all the students that show in the incite Gallery, however, this exhibition has always been an annual highlight.

Noting comings and goings, our new weekend receptionist, Severine Salvador, joined us in February when we bid adieu to Valerie Leaist. Valerie had been with us for three years as Sunday reception, but for a considerably longer period as a student in our pottery program.

We also want to thank Briana Palmer, Associate Professor McMaster School of the Arts who is leaving the Board of Governors after serving for 2 years, contributing her skills as an artist and an educator.

We are also saying goodbye to two members of our support team. Adriana Romkes has been providing cleaning services to the school for the past 12 years. With the growth in the use of the school, we have outgrown the single custodian model. So, it is

with regret we say goodbye to Adriana in that role. You’ll likely still see her around the school wearing one of her other two “hats” – creative pottery artist and a leader in the Hamilton Potters’ Guild.

Alvaro Araujo was hired in 2018 on a one year contract when our previous building maintenance coordinator took a personal leave. Al’s friendly, helpful attitude endeared him to so many of us, faculty and students included, and we will miss the stories of his homeland in the Azores.

Alicia Giansante joined our administrative team in the position of Program Assistant. Initially starting with us on a part-time basis, Alicia became full time at the end of June and is a much valued addition. She has been assisting with the Artists’ Connection program, including the launch of Artists’ Connection 6: The Artist as Environmentalist, and working on family open houses, Little Black Frame, and the Annual Art Auction.

Early in January, DVSA was invited to go to Ottawa – to the Ottawa School of Art, to be precise – to meet with other independent art school directors. Taking place in May, this peer-to-peer learning circle has been extraordinarily helpful in gathering working knowledge of who’s out there and what is being done in this field. Both Claire and our business manager,

Dundas Valley School of Art 2018-19 Annual Report 4

Kathron Hann, found this three day gathering to be insightful and inspiring by turns. DVSA is now a founding member of the new, national organization: Canadian Independent Art Schools.

While most people would say that what we do is to serve our students, at DVSA we also see the program as one that helps build community cohesion. In undertaking this work, we would like to express our gratitude to the many funders who help make such programs possible. Moreover, without the support of our exceptional faculty, staff, board, and extraordinary volunteers, the activities of DVSA would be difficult, if not impossible to bring to fruition.

In The Studios

2018-19 was a banner year for our art classes, workshops and children & teen art camps. Total annual registrations soared to a new high of 6,337. We continue to be thrilled by the response from the Hamilton community towards our efforts to provide accessible and high quality art education and the growth of new students joining our collective of artists. The artwork emerging from our studios was, as always, impressive. Representations of this new work could be seen during our Little Black Frame Mystery Art Night, Dundas Winterblooms and our Annual Art Auction. It was also on full display during several Advanced Studio exhibitions and May’s Juried Student Art Exhibition hosted in the DVSA Gallery (see right). Student artwork posted online through our social media channels generated enthusiastic responses and positive encouragement from fellow artists, regionally and even internationally. Congratulations to our instructors and students for all their inspired work.

2019 Juried Student Art Exhibition

Open to all DVSA students, our 2019 Juried Student Art Exhibition was a shining example of the high quality art being created in our studios, providing an opportunity for our artists to exhibit and receive feedback on their work from the year.

Over 125 pieces in various mediums were submitted with 45 being chosen by two independent judges to be represented in the exhibition. 1st Prize 3D went to Donna Blake for her unique ceramic piece, SK8VOX#1 while 1st Prize 2D went to Jennifer Robins for her painting, Portrait of a Woman In Black Costume. Sharon Maynard was the winner of the Peoples' Choice Award with her oil painting, Muskoka Stream. New this year were 2nd and 3rd prizes along with several honourable mentions. A hearty congratulations to the winning artists and

to all who took the leap and entered artwork this year.

Making Art Accessible – DVSA Outreach Initiatives

At DVSA, we believe developing creativity and creative thinking is integral to positive personal growth. In 2018-19, we continued to place an emphasis on providing specialized programming for participants of all ages and backgrounds where opportunities to engage in hands-on art experiences are not always accessible. Below is a summary of our outreach initiatives:

Forging Ties With Eva Rothwell Centre A new initiative this year, DVSA partnered with The Eva Rothwell Centre to run after school art programs for young artists, ages 4-10. Located in north-east Hamilton, this busy community centre provides a range of programs for the underserved families in the neighbourhood, including a food and clothing bank, job training and after school snack and tutoring programs.

Funded by Hamilton Community Foundation, the after school art program was an opportunity for DVSA to bring art education to children living in the neighbourhood and engage them in projects that develop creative literacy. The art workshops, run by DVSA instructor, Sandra Greenblatt, challenged the children with projects that involved drawing, painting and sculpture.

“’When is Sandy coming back?’ is all I hear,”says Sam Campanella, Executive Director at Eva Rothwell. “The program has provided so many children and youth the opportunity to develop their creativity, problem-solving, focus skills, and even working with other children.”

Growing The Artist Connection Our four travelling Artists' Connection programs – AC3, 4, 5 & 6 – were in high demand this year, visiting 36 schools in the Hamilton-Wentworth and Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Boards and offering over 37,000 students in Grades JK-12 the opportunity to participate in quality visual arts programming. Proving to be popular was the all new Artists’ Connection 6: Artist as Environmentalist program featuring artwork from local artists that challenges ideas and thinking around environmental issues.

Over the past 14 years, over 260 schools have participated in DVSA’s Artist Connection program, engaging 243,000 students in visual arts education.

DVSA’s Artists’ Connection Programs consist of an art exhibition and artist talks and workshops, designed to give

Page 13: 2018 – 2019 Annual Report - DVSA

students the opportunity to participate in quality visual arts programming, to expand their visual literacy and critical thinking skills, and develop an appreciation and understanding for visual arts and the local art community. Regional artists such as Clarence Porter, Lorrie Gallant, E. Robert Ross and Michelle Guitard visited many of the schools hosting the travelling visual art exhibitions and led students in workshops that share the artist’s work and artistic practice.

The program continues to grow – Artists’ Connection 7 which focusses on the theme of sense of self is currently in development.

Funding for the Artists’ Connection Programs were provided by The Edith H. Turner Foundation Fund, The H.G. Bertram Foundation, incite Foundation, OTIP Community Fund and Arcelor Mittal Dofasco.

Foster the Ability With combined funding from Arcelor Mittal Dofasco, Y108 Children’s Fund, Edith H. Turner and Malloch Foundation Funds and Greygates Foundation, and in partnership with the Children`s Aid Society of Hamilton (CAS) and Catholic Children`s Aid Society of Hamilton (CCAS), DVSA was able to offer a series of free visual art workshops, weekly classes and bursaries for youth who are part of the Foster and Kin Family Program at CAS and CCAS. This was another unique opportunity for families supported by these social service agencies to explore and make art together – and in the process, promote visual arts in the community and emphasize the importance of individual creativity for everyone. We were very pleased to provide the largest number of bursaries ever for our summer art programs.

Aging Artfully Now in its third year, our Aging Artfully outreach program continued to engage the senior community in visual art activities taught by professional artists. The goal was to promote accessibility to the visual arts while offering opportunities for seniors to express their individual creativity. Two local senior

centres took part in this year’s program – Wentworth Lodge and St. Joseph’s Villa – with art lessons on watercolour painting and sculpture offered at both locations.

“Some of the participants start out hesitantly, but as they progress with their project, you see their confidence grow,” says Tina Destro, the program instructor. “Each senior artist has a history and story – they have lived a life filled with many experiences. To able to step into their day and encourage, inspire and artistically support them – that is a real privilege.”

Funding for Aging Artfully was generously provided by Arcelor Mittal Dofasco, The Schwenger Family Foundation, The John & Esther Marshall Memorial Fund and The Martin Foundation Fund at Hamilton Community Foundation.

Family Art Open Houses Designed for beginners to advanced students of all ages, DVSA welcomed hundreds of children and parents into the studios for our free Family Art Day Open Houses. Featuring art activities based on the themes of Halloween, the winter holidays and Valentine’s Day, these

afternoons were all about family art making and having fun as participants created alongside one another in a variety of disciplines from painting to pottery. Funding for this project was generously provided by the Dougher Community Fund at Hamilton Community Foundation, CIBC Wood Gundy Burlington and Walmart Ancaster.

RBC Student Visual Art Scholarships In partnership with RBC’s Emerging Artists Project, DVSA this year awarded a record 55 Visual Art Scholarships to deserving students in Grades 2 – 12 who attend schools in the Hamilton- Wentworth and Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Boards. Teachers were asked to nominate a student in their school with talent and a passion for visual arts and who would benefit from additional learning through a free class of their choice at DVSA.

This year was the conclusion of our partnership with RBC and the annual exhibition of artwork by our award winners in July was our largest ever, taking place in the incite Gallery and throughout two floors of the school. Always a highlight is witnessing the pride in the students’ faces when seeing their work on display.

Winterblooms Expands For 2019

Dundas Valley School of Art, Carnegie Gallery and Dundas Museum & Archives continued their strong community collaboration by joining forces for an expanded 2019 edition of Winterblooms.

“The event keeps growing in popularity, compelling us to expand the exhibitions,” says Claire Loughheed, our school Executive Director. “Bringing together the two art forms results in some stunning flower, art and artifact combinations. Plus, it brings a much welcome burst of colour to winter.”

Held in January, the fourth edition of this event featured inspired new art and artifacts and a team of florists ready to show off their creativity. Presented in partnership by the three organizations along with the support of Mohawk College’s Continuing Education program, this year’s exhibits once again drew hundreds of art and floral lovers to all three Dundas locations. The four day event features free exhibitions of original artworks and precious artifacts, accompanied by fresh floral arrangements that take their inspiration from their paired work of art.

Attendance continues to grow for this community building event, bringing new visitors into all three locations.

Winterblooms is scheduled to return for a fifth exhibition in January 2020.

Seen any of these around the city? Our Fall/Winter 2018 bus shelter ad campaign turned more than a few heads and brought plenty of positive response from the community. Created with the help of Muse Marketing Group, the ads used inspirational quotes from a range of famous artists to promote the school and further build our brand awareness.

Frame faces were on! Hosted in November, the fourth edition of our Little Black Frame Mystery Art Night sold out in a mere 24 hours as art lovers across the city clamoured to be part of the evening’s fun. There were more outstanding pieces from our participating artists, and most importantly, much needed funds raised to support DVSA programs.

The Little Black Frame event is a unique twist on the art lottery. Featuring over 150 stunning art pieces showcased in a little black frame, each artwork is created by an established or emerging local artist. When attendees hear their ticket number drawn, they can choose a favourite piece – not knowing who made the masterpiece until it’s in their hands. With music, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres to add to the atmosphere, Little Black Frame is Hamilton’s hottest art party and a great showcase for our DVSA and local artists.

For the fourth straight year, we exceeded our expectations, grossing $29,870 and $9,000 in kind for a total gross of $38,870. The net income for the event was

$21,181 with attendance figures estimated at over 350 people.

Event sponsors at different levels offset costs, with sponsorship opportunities ranging from $250 to $5,000. Over 150 artists committed to supporting this event, including local artists Eric Ranveau, Lora Repta, Barb Sachs, Catherine Gibbon, Julia Veenstra and Paull Rodrigue, along with esteemed artists on the school faculty and up and coming student artists.

This year’s Little Black Frame event is scheduled for November 9, 2019.

Paddles shot up and the bidding was lively as art lovers responded to this year’s superb selection of 52 art pieces during the Live Auction finale of our 49th Annual Art Auction.

“We couldn’t ask for a better response,” said Heather Vaugeois, auction coordinator and Director of Advancement for DVSA. “There was a buzz from the moment the front doors opened. The record bidding shows just how much auction-goers connected with this year’s selection of artworks.”

Thousands of art patrons visited the school over the three days in April to view the art-filled studios that somehow managed to display a record 1,694 submissions.

The enthusiasm from artists and buyers propelled DVSA to another record total gross of $329,523. The Discovery Room and Dream Silent auctions also continued to engage buyers and contributed to the record numbers.

The majority of patrons attending the auction came from the Dundas, Hamilton and Burlington region. Areas of growth included the GTA and Caledonia.

The culminating Live auction generated revenue of $94,375. Highlights of the Live auction included a lithograph by Pablo Picasso along with original works by Laura Culic, Susan Outlaw, Peter Kirkland, Conrad Furey, Abraham Anghik Ruben, Julia Veenstra and E. Robert Ross.

The Sneak Preview Evening that kicks off the auction weekend remains a must- attend event. This year, over 400 patrons consisting of donors, sponsors, buyers and artists were in attendance.

The success of the auction is due in large part to the over 300 volunteers who help with the auction and the wonderful support by local business for sponsorship, catalogue advertisements and dream auction items.
