Hi Girl Scouts,The most delicious time of year is just around the corner and there are so many reasonsto be excited for the 2018 Girl Scout Cookie Program. From the return of the Girl ScoutS’mores Cookie to reaching our goal of one million boxes donated to Operation CookieDrop to providing more opportunities for our girls to build and hone their financial

skills– this year’s sale promises to be full of even moreadventure and fun.

For over a century, the Girl Scout Cookie Program has served asa perfect blend of fun, friends, and skill-building experiences. Girlshave a blast decorating their cookie booths, dressing in cookie costumes, and sellingalongside friends while simultaneously developing real world skills that help them becomeinnovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders. The Girl Scout Cookie Program often serves as girls’first introduction to financial literacy education, helping them develop the confidence andexpertise needed to own their financial futures and to strengthen their leadershipdevelopment. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, girls are quite clear that theyneed and want financial literacy skills to help them be successful now and throughout theirlives. Ninety-percent of girls said it’s important for them to learn how to manage money, and87 percent say that it is important to set financial goals to help them achieve their dreams.Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, our girls learn essential life skills - goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics - while buildingeveryday leadership, one box at a time.

And those boxes (and our girls’ hard work) certainly adds up! From traveling to new placeslike Europe or Costa Rica, to funding community service projects and philanthropy efforts,to spending a week at one of our summer camps discovering the magic of the greatoutdoors – the funds raised through the Girl Scout Cookie Program support our girls on theirpath to leadership while broadening their experiences and opportunities. Every day I aminspired by the work and leadership of our girls. The way they seek out new adventures andchallenge themselves, the way they give back to our local communities and the world, andthe way they lead with empathy, bravery, and compassion. Our girls are ground breakers, thought leaders, and role models, and I could not be prouder of all they have accomplished.

As you cheer on your Girl Scouts during this year’s sale, remember that every weekend spent at acookie booth and every goal reached is helping power unique and amazing experiences for our GirlScouts. Remind customers that their cookie purchase helps girls develop essential financial literacyskills, ignites their entrepreneurial spirits, and empowers them to become courageous and boldG.I.R.L.s (Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, and Leaders).

I hope you’ll join me in encouraging our Girl Scouts to set goals, build important life skills, and discoverwhat a cookie, and a Girl Scout, can truly do. Here’s wishing all our girls, families, and volunteers a funand successful cookie sale!

Yours in Girl Scouting,

L I S A J O N E S

In addition to learning valuable life skills in the Cookie Sale Program, there are many incentives, recognitions, and patches that girls can earn based on their individual and cookie booth sales.

PatchesAll girls that sell Girl Scout cookies earn patches regardless of the proceeds plan they chose. Justcheck out the vests and sashes of other Girl Scouts and you’ll see how long they’ve been sellingcookies and how many boxes they’ve sold each year!

End of Sale RecognitionsAt the end of the sale troops complete the transfer of all cookies sold to each girl by adding her initial cookie order plus any additional sales during the“Planned Order” phase, including donations to Operation Cookie Drop, packages sold online and sold at cookie booths. Smart Cookies thenautomatically tabulates the girls total sales and recognitions earned. Recognitions are cumulative up to the 1,000 box level – which means girls willearn all the recognitions up to and including the item at their individual selling level. For example, a girl selling 1,600 boxes will receive the 1,500+Super/bar patch, Echo Dot, duffle bag, theme sweatshirt, beach towel and sunglasses, travel hanging organizer, starry room light, plush elephant, 2018Diva Pin and travel zipper organizers, Combo avatar patch (if met requirements in the 2017 Fall Sale), theme t-shirt, journal with pen, drawstring sack, pen and sticky notes set, and theme patch. Wow! That’s a ton of great stuff! Please note that girls in troops that elect the higher proceeds plan do notreceive End of Sale recognitions but do receive patches. Please ask your child’s troop cookie coordinator which plan the troop voted on.

Now entering its 13th year, Operation Cookie Drop (OCD) has made itpossible to ship over 907,000 packages of Girl Scout cookies to our bravemilitary men and women serving overseas, returning from deploymentand serving throughout our country! This year our council is striving toreach a goal of 1 Million overall packages donated!

Why Girls and Troops Participate:• It’s easy and can really boost your sales! In 2017 our troops earned over

$60,000 in proceeds from collecting Operation Cookie Drop donations, andindividual girls added an average of 30 packages to their sales -- without having todeliver a single package of cookies!

• Some customers don’t want to purchase Girl Scout cookies for themselves, but wantto support Girl Scouts and help you reach your sales goal. Their donation to OCD will dojust that – you earn sales credit and your troop earns proceeds as well.

• Girls that turn in donations for 15 packages or more ($60)receive a 2018 OCD patch.

• Girls that turn in donations for 30packages or more earn our once ina lifetime, special “Reaching for 1Million” OCD patch. • Girls that turn in donations of 30+packages will also be included ineach of our 3 drawings to win a giant, 3 ft.

stuffed elephant! For every 30 packages donated, the girl getsentered into each of the 3 drawings again. So, donations for 60packages get name entered twice, 90 and it’s entered 3 times, and so on.

• Girls love helping others and OCD does just this! Help usrecognize the sacrifices of our brave military men and women bygiving them a taste of home.

Here’s How it Works:• Collect donations from January 13 to March 4 and give

OCD money to your troop as often as possible. (Moneymust be turned in to your troop in order for a girl to receivecredit for OCD. Please communicate regularly with yourTroop Cookie Coordinator to make sure these sales areaccurately put in Smart Cookies for your Girl Scout.)

• Troops report their total donations at the end of the sale and the council places aspecial Operation Cookie Drop order directly with the bakery.

• In May the bakery delivers cookies to the Packs4Patriots organization in Greenville, theUSO in Raleigh, The USO in Jacksonville, Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station inHavelock, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, and Fort Bragg Army Base inFayetteville. Cookies are then distributed to deployed and returning personnel by themilitary branches.

Girls and troops must report all Operation Cookie Drop donations and cannot usedonations to pay for other cookie orders or undelivered cookies.

The Buy 5 ProgramEntering its 10th year, the Buy 5 Program givescustomers the opportunity to win a year’s worth(60 boxes) of their favorite Girl Scout cookies. Here’s how it works:

• Customers that buy five boxes or more duringa single purchase from a girl or troop canqualify. Donations to Operation Cookie Dropcount also!

• The girl or troop should give the customer aBuy 5 Certificate. Each girl will be given asupply of these certificates by her troop.

• The customer follows the instructions on thecertificate to enter their name in the onlineBuy 5 Drawing.

• The council will draw the names of six winnersand ship Girl Scout cookies directly to thewinners in April.

It’s that easy! Each year many girls boost theirsales just by mentioning the Buy 5 Program totheir customers – especially customers thatoriginally ordered 3 or 4 boxes. It’s easy tocalculate the cost since cookies are sold at $4per package- they can buy 5 for $20! Mostcustomers will want to purchase another box ortwo just for the opportunity to enter thedrawing!
