On the occasion of the opening of the Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress (BARC2018), on behalf of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China and in my own name, I would like to extend a warm welcome to delegates from INBAR Member states and international organisations, experts and scholars, entrepreneurs from home and abroad, as well as all the other guests and journalists from across the world, for joining us at this important event. I would also like to avail myself of this opportunity to express heartfelt thanks to all the people who show interest, concern and support to the development of bamboo and rattan.

The Chinese Government is paying sincere attention to forest resources protection and forestry development, including bamboo and rattan, and has taken a series of important measures to protect forest resources and accelerate forestry reform and development, with enormous achievements. The forest coverage rate has increased to 21.66% from 8.6% in the middle of the last century; forest area has reached 0.208 billion ha and forest stock has grown to 15.137 billion m3. In the context of the reduction of global forests, China has become the country with the fastest growing forest resources and has the most effective ecological governance in the world. China has made a positive contribution to the maintenance of global ecological security, the response to global climate change and the promotion of green growth.

The bamboo and rattan industry is a green future industry incorporating ecological, economic and social benefits together, with huge potential and broad prospects. The Chinese Government is paying high attention to the protection and utilisation of bamboo and rattan resources, and taking vigorous measures to promote the fast development of the bamboo and rattan industry. The bamboo and rattan industry has become a large new emerging industry and economic growth point for rural people shaking off poverty and becoming prosperous. The Chinese Government has provided active support for international cooperation on bamboo and rattan. In a congratulatory letter to INBAR on its 20th anniversary celebrated on November 6th, 2017, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China would continue to support INBAR's work, and the country was willing to cooperate with the international community to implement the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to contribute to the building of a global ecological civilisation, a community with a shared future for mankind and a more beautiful world.

The theme of BARC2018 is “Enhancing South-South Cooperation for Green Development through Bamboo and Rattan’s Contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals”. It aims to establish an international platform for policy dialogues, knowledge sharing, industrial cooperation and people-to-people exchanges in the bamboo and rattan sector, and make a greater contribution to the promotion of global bamboo and rattan development and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Last but not least, I wish the Congress great success.

Welcome to the 2018 Bamboo and Rattan Congress – BARC 2018, which is co-hosted by the International Bamboo and

Rattan Organisation (INBAR) and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China. The Congress will take

place from 25 to 27 June 2018, and this handbook will provide you with all you need to know to get the most out of the

meeting.

We are expecting around 1,200 participants including senior politicians and leading international decisionmakers, as well

as experts, scientists, private sector representatives and artisans. We will have a good number of students as well.

The theme of BARC2018 is “Enhancing South-South Cooperation for Green Development through Bamboo and Rattan’s

Contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals.” The main agenda of the Congress will include three high-

level dialogues and a number of parallel thematic sessions focusing on bamboo and rattan’s role in the Sustainable

Development Goals and South-South Cooperation, climate change and green growth, technology innovations and

industrial development. In addition, an exhibition highlighting bamboo and rattan products, technologies, arts and culture

will take place during the three-day Congress.

I hope that you will fi nd the discussions inspiring, and that you will take away new ideas and a better understanding of the

opportunities that bamboo and rattan provide. We hope that the Congress will provide the basis for real action and that

we can strengthen existing relations and launch new partnerships.

This handbook will tell you what is happening, where and when, but if you still have questions, there is an information

booth in the reception area.

I hope you will enjoy taking part in BARC 2018.

A thousand years ago, Su Dongpo, the literary giant of the Song Dynasty in China, left us the famous poem expressing appreciation of bamboo: “Let there be no meat on my plate, There must be bamboo in my garden……” (From “Green Bamboo House”, Su Shi [1037-1101], also known as Su Dongpo).

The poem was the most appropriate in expressing the Chinese people’s deep love for bamboo. Today, the fi rst Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress is launching in Beijing, the ancient capital of six dynasties in China. Guests and friends have come from all over the world to get together and explore the best ways to develop these two unique natural resources, bamboo and rattan, and to foster initiatives for their utilisation and applications for a prosperous future. Taking this opportunity, on behalf of the Organising Committee of the 2018 Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress (BARC 2018), and in my personal capacity, I would like to extend my warmest welcome and heartfelt gratitude to our guests and friends from all over the world!

Bamboo and rattan, particularly bamboo, are unique forest resources that are widely distributed across the world. They play an indispensable role in developing a green economy, alleviating poverty and improving livelihoods, protecting the environment and promoting eco-culture.

The theme of BARC 2018 is “Enhancing South-South Cooperation for Green Development through Bamboo and Rattan’s Contributions to the UN SDGs”. The main agenda of the Congress will include high-level dialogues focusing on bamboo and rattan’s role in the UN SDGs and South-South Cooperation, climate change and green growth, technology innovations and industry development. There will also be more than 70 thematic events during the congress, with rich contents and unique visual impacts, which provide a broad range of dialogue platforms. Meanwhile, this Congress has invited Member countries of INBAR, as well as international partners from Asia, Africa and America, to jointly organise and showcase the achievements of various countries regarding bamboo and rattan development.

I believe firmly that BARC 2018 fits into current global development trends and meets the present requirements and needs of the bamboo and rattan sector. It will exert a profound and vital infl uence over bamboo and rattan resources’ protection, cultivation and utilisation in the future, and will play a significant role in enhancing green and sustainable development. I hope BARC 2018 will fully realise its role as a platform to promote information exchange and resources integration, concentrating the wisdom and passion of world professionals, and drive bamboo and rattan sectoral development at global level with new initiatives and power!

I hope, through the diversifi ed exchange activities during BARC 2018, all of our guests and friends will meet with and make new friends, and come home with fruitful results and rich gains.

Let me wish all of our guests and friends good health and a happy time during BARC 2018!

Introduction

In conjunction with the Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress, the organising committee is hosting an exhibition of

bamboo and rattan products and technology, which showcases the accomplishments of the global bamboo and rattan

industry and demonstrates its cultural diversity. The exhibition showcases high-quality products and advanced bamboo

and rattan technology from both abroad and at home. The exhibition aims to show how deeply bamboo and rattan have

been involved in human life.

Highlights

11. BARC Pavvilions of INNBARR Memmber Countrries

Asia-Pacifi c Pavilion: The Asia Pavilion is built in the style of a Southeast Asian bamboo cabin. Several bamboo lanterns

hang from the roof and the shadow of surrounding bamboos dance in the yard. The Pavilion displays some of the rich

history of bamboo utilisation and culture in Asia.

African Pavilion: The Africa Pavilion building is based on the style of the traditional Ethiopian bamboo house, Sidama,

and decorated in a simple manner. In this Pavilion, visitors can appreciate African folk art and crafts, such as xylophones

and masks, and enjoy the performance of the African drum djembe.

America Pavilion: The Latin America Pavilion showcases dazzling folk instruments and handicrafts made from bamboo

and rattan. Visitors will experience some of Latin America’s bamboo culture with traditional music and folk dances.

Host Country's Pavilion: Bamboo and rattan elements permeate the main structure and overall decoration of this building.

The Pavilion combines the extensive application of bamboo technology with its deep-rooted bamboo culture and history.

Bamboo, as the core component, is broadly used across construction, musical instruments, paintings and lantern making:

products which embody both the heritage and innovation of the bamboo industry in the host country, China.

222. Exhibitionn of Bambooo and Ratttan Produccts

Bamboo and rattan have been used to make a diverse range of products: from construction and furniture to chopsticks

and textiles. Bamboo and rattan resources have provided human beings with a large number of products. With its

rapid rate of growth and ability to grow without being reseeded, bamboo has become a popular material for producing

sustainable products. It plays a signifi cant role in improving lives and livelihoods in bamboo-growing areas.

Bamboo wind turbine blades: Bamboo can be used as the primary material for large-scale wind turbine blades, as it

Page 96: 2018 GLOBAL BAMBOO AND RATTAN CONGRESS Handbook in English for... · Rattan Organisation (INBAR) and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China. The Congress will

outperforms other substances for its high strength and large stock as well as low density. Through specifi c technological

processes, bamboo can be optimised into a high-performance industrial material, which makes it a perfect component for

wind turbine blades. Bamboo blades are lightweight, low-cost, recyclable and reliable. They also consume less energy in

the manufacturing process, making them a low-carbon alternative material.

Bamboo winding pipeline: The bamboo winding composite is composed of bamboo as a base material and resin as an

adhesive. It is a newly developed biomaterial created through a new winding technology, which can be used to produce

pressure piping, containers, large-scale storage tanks, the bodies of transport machines (such as high-speed trains,

aircrafts and ships) and military equipment. The application of bamboo winding composite in production can reduce the

demand for energy-intensive traditional materials such as steel, plastic and glass fi bre.

333. Exhibitionn of Bambooo AArts andd Craafts

Tips:

1. Tickets are issued for one-way use only.

2. It is suggested to prepare loose change beforehand to take metro. At most stations passengers can buy the ticket

either at the Customer Service Center or self-service ticket vending machine, but some stations are only equipped with

ticket vending machines which accept 1 Yuan coin, 5 Yuan and 10 Yuan banknotes.

SSubway

The subway system in Beijing has 15 lines. The fare is 3-9 Yuan. Trains run from 5:30 in the morning until 11:00 in the

evening. A ticket can be bought at the ticket offi ce at each station or at an automatic ticketing machine. Subway stops are

announced over the train’s speaker system in Chinese and English. Commonly, there are four entrances in four directions

for each stop. So, you should make sure which one to take when getting out of the station or you will probably get lost.

You can fi nd signs with the main destinations at crossings of the passageway. Passengers can fi nd toilets on the platform

level or in the ticket hall of each stop.

TTaaxis

Taxis in Beijing have several colors. All of them show a taximeter inside. You can easily fi nd them in every part of Beijing.

666. WeatherJune in Beijing is both the beginning of summer and the fi rst boom of the tourist season of the city. Generally speaking, clear days are the norm of the June weather in Beijing, and there is still big temperature difference between day and night. Compared to May, the temperature in June rises signifi cantly. Except for the rainy days or when there is cold air, the daily highest temperature usually reaches above 30°C (86°F).

Because of the high temperature and the strong air convection, there would be more rain with occasional thunderstorms, but it won’t rain continuously.

You should defi nitely try the Peking duck(meat) in Beijing once!!! 全聚德 is the most famous ones and others are 便宜仿,

四季民福 . Prices will be around 25-30euros for the whole duck, you can also order half. Remember to ask them if they

can also peal the skin and eat with sugar, you will love the taste! A

Zha Jiang noodles ( 炸酱面 )(Sause contains pork) is also one of my favorite traditional food in Beijing. 海碗居,老北京炸酱面 are good restaurant choices, prices around 5-10euros. B
