When the new program launches for the Fall 2018 semester, Lackawanna will join the ranks of more than 60 progressive colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. Lackawanna is offering the first known eSports program in Northeastern Pennsylvania, providing new educational pathways to our predominantly local student body.

STUDENTS FIRST!All members of Lackawanna’s new eSports team will be held to the same academic standards applied to current student athletes. They will be required to:• maintain at least a 2.0 GPA;• stay enrolled as a full-time student

(minimum 12 credits per semester);• participate in four hours of study hall per

week;• participate in weekly grade checks;• and attend all tutoring sessions.

Success in the classroom is paramount to performance in a student’s respective sport.

WHAT IS eSPORTS? A TL;DR BRIEFForget what you knew about video games, because eSports is no mere hobby. The massive, global series of video game competitions, often played by professional gamers, will be a $1.5 billion industry by 2020, according to Business Insider. In January 2018, Forbes Magazine declared eSports “the new college football,” citing the inroads that eSports has made into the college sports arena via collegiate teams and scholarship opportunities.

With an ever-developing field of new competitive games, eSports is one of the most dynamic areas for an emerging college athlete to compete in. Student athletes have the chance to develop critical and analytical thinking skills as they make split-second decisions to see their extensive strategies through to victory.
