Hello All :

What a great rally we had in Valentine, Ne. Quite a few members got" tanked"...no...not from any alco-holic beverage. They actually got into plastic tanks that held 6 or 8 people, lawn chairs, and life preserv-ers and went floating down the river, other members went on guided rides or went on their own rides. The weather was pretty decent for the most part, but we on the ride Saturday morning did put on our rain gear as it looked as if it could rain, but all we got into was a mist.

There was a card game going on in the evening, and also there was the LCR (Left, Center, Right)competition going on. I declare that LCR is the official game of GWRRA.

There was plenty of snacks in the hospitality room to keep us nourished, and coffee was ready all the time. The hotel had hot breakfast, and it was tasty. Got us started for the day.

A short presentation was given by Michael Olson (he is with Motorcycle Awareness) Thank You Mi-chael !

During closing ceremonies all the free will donation monies were given back to the members if you had the winning tickets.

Also during closing ceremonies our new district directors were announced: Congratulations to Ross and Donna Jimenez, I am sure they will do a great job, also announced was our new District Treasur-er Phil Kelly. who also I am sure will do a great job. Congratulations to Ross, Donna and Phil.

Sadly , Lance and Dian Brozek who have done much for the district have stepped down, so when you see them give them your THANKS.

Our attendance was down, but in essence that is not a bad thing, as you really get to spend more time conversing with other members and get to know them better.

No plans yet for next years District Rally, but ,keep reading the District newsletter, as happenings will be showing up there in the future.

All for now...Ride Far...Ride Safe

Well if you didn’t attend our District Rally, all I can say is, you missed a good time. Eighteen (18 )of us went out to the Niobrara River and enjoyed several hours of “tanking” the river. We had 3 stock tanks with lounge yard chairs in them and 6 were in each tank. We floated leisurely down the river and enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the way. About half way through our 4 hour trip, we beached our tanks and got out so we could walk up to Smith Falls. A few of us braved the pool at the bottom of the falls and felt how really cold that water is. On Saturday, 14 bikes and 2 cars went on a ride into South Dakota. We rode along the White River, and then made a stop at Saint Francis Mission and School. There was several other rides in and around the area. Sunday on our way out of town, a few of us stopped at the old Rail Road Bridge, which is now part of the Cowboy Trail. Beautiful County, so much to see and not enough time. Ross and I will be going back sometime to see more of the area. As always, ride safe and have FUN. Here are some pictures we took at the Rally. Old Railroad Bridge

Mark and Pam Burwell

District Educators

Through various modes of social media, Pam and I saw you all appeared to have a great time at the NE/SD District Rally. We’re sorry we couldn’t be there, but as you all were getting ready to depart for Valentine NE, we had just returned from our AMTRAK Rail Vacation to Yellowstone National Park—0600 Thursday arrival to the Omaha station after 26 hours on the train from Salt Lake City, UT (a tale for another time). Congratulations to Donna and Ross Jimenez for assuming the responsibilities of Dis-trict Directors, and thank you to Lance and Diane Brozek for your work during your time serving as same. Now… any takers for the position of NE/SD District Educator?

A Case for Earplugs

For the past six months, I’ve noticed Pam telling me more and more to not talk so loudly. Additionally, I find I say “What?” a lot more when people say something to me, and my tinnitus is getting louder. All of these symptoms seem to be gradually increasing for me, and from what I understand, it is likely I damaged (permanently) my hearing over the years participating in various activities. There is one activity, however, that significantly increases these symptoms almost immediately—riding our motor-cycle at highway speeds.

Several motorcycle magazine articles I read noted wind noise in our helmets can reach 105 dB at 60 mph and louder at higher speeds. To put this into perspective, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides the following information:

Sound Level (dB) Typical Result

90 Damage to hearing possible after 2 hours exposure

95 Damage to hearing possible after 50 minutes exposure

100 Hearing loss possible after 15 minutes

105 – 110 Hearing loss possible in less than 5 minutes

Mark and Pam Burwell

District Educators

If hearing loss at 60 mph is possible in less than 5 minutes, imagine what is happening to our ears as we ride for hours upon hours on our motorcycles.

While it’s too late for the hearing capability I already lost, I plan to protect what I have left. I pur-chased a bulk package of earplugs and will now make it a point to wear earplugs (Pam, too) whenever we venture out on the open road. What about you?

Ride Safely,

Mark

Equivalency and Value– Comparing Costs

Charlotte and I ate lunch at a local chain restaurant recently. After consuming an appetizer, two ham-

burger dishes (one for each of us) and a couple of fountain drinks, the total came to a little over $35.00.

This is about normal for a meal. What did we get for our $35.00.

Our tummies were happy, of course, but only for a short while. For some reason we were hungry

again in a few hours.

We did get empty calories to add to our figures. Why is it so easy to keep these calories for what

seems forever; but is so hard to say good bye to them?

Why do we not call a French fry by the correct name of pomme frit?

Why does cola taste so good but attacks our teeth so vehemently?

Lots of questions can be generated from this simple act of sustaining our bodies for a few hours.

Why don’t we take that $35.00 and apply it to something that will last longer than a few hours? This ac-

tivity would be much better for us as motorcycle enthusiasts and would benefit us, yes really benefit us

for a much longer period -of-time. No, I’m not talking about a super jumbo sized big boy hamburger. I

am talking about a rider course for the rider or a two-up rider course for the co-rider. The rider course

will benefit both through improvement or at least refreshment of extremely necessary riding skills that

may equate to life saving skills for the rider and co-rider. Remember the co-rider arrives at the scene of

the crash a fraction of a second after the rider so the time difference is negligible. If not for yourself, take

a rider course for your co-rider. The rider course is available in many flavors:

Advanced Rider Course (ARC) – Rider and Two-up on the two-wheeler

Trike Rider Course (TRC) - Rider and Two-up on the three-wheeler

Trailering Course (TC) - Rider and Two-up on the two-wheeler towing a trailer

Trike Trailer Riding Course (TTRC) - Rider and Two-up on the three-wheeler towing a trailer

Sidecar Rig Riding Course (SRC) - Rider and Two-up on a sidecar rig

Most often, the District where the course is conducted charges about $35.00 per bike. That means that a

rider course costs less than half of that hamburger meal for two and lasts a LOT longer. Please think

about and weigh the equivalent values here. You can pay ~$35.00 plus for a hamburger lunch for two

which lasts about four hours or you can take a rider course for ~$35.00 which should at least last for the

current riding season or possibly a lot longer. Just think, you can keep your skills sharp and refreshed for

the cost of a hamburger! Speaking for myself, I know I can afford to skip at least one hamburger a year.

Do the math!

Contact your District Educator and tell him/her that you want a rider course and he will work at

bringing one to you, if at all possible.

CONGRATULATIONS to Donna & Ross Jimenez!! They will soon become the NE/SD District Di-rectors as announced at the NE/SD rally last week. They are active with NE-W in Scottsbluff, NE as current Chapter Directors. Congratulations also go out to Phil Kelly who will become the new District Treasurer.

Thanks to Lance and Diane Brozek for their tenure as directors for the last year and a half. They have been District Directors previously and stepped this last time to fill a void. Also thanks to Rodger Faw-cett for filling the treasurer position for Lance.

Getting members involved in chapter life – How?

Last month I sent all Chapter Directors and Membership Enhancement Coordinators the full listing of members in their chapters. This is all members assigned to the chapter and not just the active mem-bers. I asked that they add all those members to their chapter newsletter mailing list – no extra cost just adding a few names to the email. Each chapter has members who may not presently attend Chap-ter gatherings or events. It may be as simple as they are not aware that there is a chapter near them or what is happening.

One chapter told me they did add all members to the email and 4 members who had never attended a gathering or rally came this year. By using the Area Report Listing [ARL] tool, each chapter can reach out to all members and inform them of the FUN and FRIENDSHIP available by attending.

Page 10: GWRRA 2018ne-sd.pdf · Donna and Ross Jimenez Asst. District Directors for Nebraska Well if you didn’t attend our District Rally, all I can say is, you missed a good time

Everyone attending this year’s rally had a chance to connect with members of other chapters and few other districts [states]. Please consider continuing this contact by attending other chapter gatherings, events or rides. The GWRRA family is more than just the chapter you are in and by visiting others you expand your friends and can even get new ideas on things like; riding schedules, fun at a gathering or adding new events. Remember, as a GWRRA member we are all welcome in all Chapters, Districts and National events. How about this? Schedule a Chapter ride [we need more rides] and then go see another chapter. Double the fun – a ride and a meet and greet with new friends. Can’t get much better than that!

Until next time – Have FUN!
