Club finances

Ian and I caught up with Peter Milbank-Jones recently for a quick catch up on finances - although the club account is still healthy, the current capital will be gone in c3 years if we don’t do something. No-one is suggesting that we start collecting membership fees again as that’s very hard work. Or owning club stock. And one of our main expenses doesn’t exist anymore – a hard copy newsletter.

Although, over the past few years, the rallies have been pretty much self-financing as far as direct costs are concerned, the club’s remaining main expense of the year is the Public Liability Insurance Our proposal is that, we include, say, £10 per person, in future rally fees to cover that insurance, because the rally is what it’s there for primarily …and unless you’re a rally organiser, don’t even think about suggesting that we don’t have any.

The club does have some other minor outgoings including the website – read on, for how we propose to cover these. We’ve always charged non-members for valuations and for help with registering vehicles, but will be charging club members (apart from a couple of life members) for valuations going forward, and also for specific help provided like the 603 buyers guide. And while we’re on the subject of valuations: Watch out for the changing value of your Tatra and also exchange rates!

Thanks to Peter Visser for his photos of the TRN rally in September: https://www.flickr.com/photos/davydutchy/albums/72157711149449448/page1

And thanks to Jirka Pollak for sending this through: Hans Ledwinka became an honorary citizen of Kopřivnice earlier this autumn - his Grandson Dr. Hans Ledwinka from Tyrol accepted the diploma during a short ceremony on the balcony of Ringhoffer's villa. Jirka tells me that the woman in green is President of Tatra Club, which is itself now 50 years old.

This piece is in German, but just press the translate button! https://oldtimer-veranstaltung.de/2019/09/hans-ledwinka-wurde-ehrenbuerger-seiner-tatrastadt-koprivnice/

David Russel’s Tatraplan out and about in the US again. David says: “The picture to the right shows what I often see when returning to the car, people checking the car out, reading the short information sheet propped in the window, or taking photos.” No need to thank David, as when I did he said: “Pleasure is mine. Showing off is fun!”

The picture to left shows the T600 dropping in on a major Citroen Rendezvous in Southern California at Cambria. David says: “The white Traction Avant was a nice counterpoint. Hard to tell from the styles but this Traction was built a few years after the Tatra, but the styling is from 1934.”

“Drove about 450 miles on the trip and drove home on the Coast Highway, beautiful Hwy 1.”

Thanks to Jirka at Tatra Register Schweiz for this – Ian thinks it’s one of the better Tatra engine transplants that he’s seen – click the link for more: http://www.tatra.ch/raritaeten/guzzi_tatra/guzzi_tatra.pdf

And thank you to Stephen Ferrada for this. Stephen says: “Sorting out old sketch work I came across a favourite "modern" Tatra of mine, engine to the front (which improves practicality) while keeping the uncompromising overall aerodynamics” and asks: “...anyone out there willing to help work it out virtually?”

7093 days later…

AV8 TATRA

On 4th April 2000 Izzy Hertzog imported his restored Tatra 603. Izzy was a very successful business man being one of the largest car wholesalers in Australia as well as having a very substantial property portfolio, he was also a very generous philanthropic man. https://www.jewishnews.net.au/end-of-a-generous-life/1428. Even with all his contacts he could not get the car registered in Australia, we are a funny country. After he passed away his children tried to register the car unsuccessfully. The car then sat in the corner of their showroom for several years after Izzy’s death with a price tag of $140K on the windscreen, close to what it reputedly had cost. After a while the family decided to auction the car as they had no real interest, the first auction had a reserve of $100K but received no bids, the second in August 2012 was without a reserve, it got 1 solitary bid, mine at $10K. That started the next stage in getting the car registered. After many attempts, various engineers reports, inspections and all sorts of machinations we eventually got all the paperwork ready in May 2019. Do not think this was a full time exercise for 7 years. Often I said stuff-it and it sat in the garage for long periods of time where I could not summon up the courage to try again. A young Will Keogh from the UK was enticed by his partner to come to live in Perth, her home city, and set up a workshop fixing Vintage Bentleys. He took a fancy to the Dust covered Tatra in the corner of my garage and encouraged me to try again. With a small stream of parts from Vintage

Tatra in the Czech Republic and many hours with “English” manuals we reached the point where we could present the paperwork and car for registration in May 2019. Australia has an odd set of procedures, Customs and importation are a Commonwealth process and car registration is a State matter. The State rejected the Commonwealths importation documents, in their opinion there was an error. The Commonwealth refused to even consider amending their paperwork, and not only that the person who imported the car had passed away and only he could apply to have the paperwork amended. Impasse and no possible solution, the Hertzog family were disinclined to get involved as that had “given” away their fathers car. Many phone calls to Canberra over the next few months, without success until I got real lucky, on one occasion Neil answered the phone. Neil is a “Petrol Head” and listened to my long story, there must be a way said Neil, I will email you a form. 48 hours later I had the prized piece of paperwork.

Off to the Department of Transport with reports, customs paperwork, examination reports, approved request for special registration number and money in hand. After waiting in the queue for 2 ½ hours, No, the receipt for the purchase is not valid, the Auction company is one of the larger sellers of cars in Australia and they had issued their standard receipt. The response from the counter person was “if you do not like it go somewhere else to get the car registered”. Typical, but not a

solution. Back again after discussions with my lawyer, and another 2 ½ hour wait. This time armed with a statutory declaration prepared by my lawyer to cover the purchase transaction. Again NO, but they would draw up a Statutory Declaration according to their rules. Signed and at last I got the desired registration document. Thank you so much, may I have a copy of the Statutory Declaration I have just signed please, as part of the vehicles records. No, was the answer, if you want a copy you can make a formal application via Freedom of Information legislation and we will consider your request. The date, 5 September 2019, 7,093 days, or over 19 years after the fully restored car arrived in Australia. The Tatra 603 is now registered and after time I will forget the drama and pain needed and I hope to report some successful trips in the near future.

Peter Graham PS Peter says: “I am still hoping to find out who made the comment at the UK rally that the material for the seats was now available. My seats need new fabric and I would love to know who made that comment.”

Update on Great Aunt Tola’s Car

Readers of Czechpoint 67 will remember the wartime story of escape from Poland that included a journey that took in Portugal as well as Yugolslavia and sightseeing in Italy en route, eventually, to the UK – here it is if you didn’t have a chance to read it last time: http://www.aricia.ltd.uk/Temp/AuntTolaTatraCar.pdf The following is an amalgamation of parts of subsequent emails between Kees Smit and Barbara Grimm-Zaluska. And as you’ll see at the bottom, Barbara is interested in any further input now that the story has moved on. Kees: The photo of the T 77a (not T77) is a photo of a 1937 Ringhoffer-Tatra T77a brochure. Another photo of the same car (attachment) with the same woman (on the left-hand passenger seat) show pre-war Moravian registration (and not Polish) plates used by Ringhoffer-Tatra for their prototypes and factory-owned cars.. It really is a photo from the same series as your photo published in the T77a brochures as it also lights out the T77a in the same way as the photo mentioned by you. Barbara: The 1937 advert - my father, André Zaluski, is still certain it is his aunt, Antonina Sidorowicz, in the photo. However, one does not see the model's face and I doubt one will ever find out who it was. What is more important for me is that the photo inspired him to remember a wealth of detail about his flight from Poland. The Tatra car was a marvellously reliable car for such a long journey and Aunt Tola made a wise choice. I sent a copy of Kees Smit's photo of a Tatra T87 to my father, André Zaluski, and he immediately recognized the car as being the type Aunt Tola drove from Poland to Portugal and which she sold to a collector or museum in about 1947. Aunt Tola's car was left hand drive (LHD), which my Father confirmed, and had Czech numberplates (not Polish) as Antonina and Wladyslaw Sidorowicz were living in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, when the war broke out. Michaela Bortlova from the Tatra Museum is now checking through the sales records of the Tatra T87 car. At a later point I will adjust some incorrect details and add some post-war family information to my account of "Aunt Tola's Tatra Car". I saw a very small photo of Aunt Tola and her Tatra car in my Aunt Ewa (Ewa Hierowska) war-time photo album, but that was in the mid 1990s. She died in 2017 and I have asked her daughter to scan it for me or take a photo of it. Let's wait and see. I will certainly send you a copy.

Now that I know the car was a Tatra T87, do you know of any Tatra T87 cars in the UK? It was bought and originally used in Czechoslovakia, so would have had Czech number plates / left hand drive when it arrived in Liverpool in 1940. The number plates may have been changed to British ones in the 1940s.

John says: “I used the top end and kept the bottom of your old engine. The crank has done no work, but there is surface rust where it sat outside, and will need to be ground and new bearings fitted.
