PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTECOLORADO LEAGUE of CHARTER SCHOOLS

The Colorado League of Charter Schools is excited to announce its full catalog of trainings, events, workshops and meetings for the 2019-2020 school year. We have opportunities for all charter school staff including workshop series, individual workshops, online cohorts and webinars as well as major events and convenings. While taking time away from your school can be a challenge, committing to your own professional learning is essential to the growth of your practice and the quality found in charter schools around the state. Thank you for considering participation in these League events.

The League is working to provide as many opportunities as possible regardless of whether your school is in an urban, suburban, or rural part of Colorado. We are dedicated to developing a strong online and electronic opportunity port-folio for educators and leaders who may only get a minimal amount of time to develop skills or build on their knowledge base.

We understand that the needs of different school groups from around the state vary. Some schools are just launch-ing so we are building up support for our newest members. Other schools are growing and developing in their third through fifth years and are challenged by building upon their enrollment, expanding their facility and fundraising. Still, other schools are mature and at their student capacity — their needs are different still and our consulting services, convenings of senior leaders, and events may be more specific to them.

Regardless of the size, location, or maturity of your school, the League is here to support you in strengthening your skill set and knowledge so that we can improve the qual-ity of the charter sector in Colorado and provide the best opportunities for setting our students up for success.

Sincerely,

Peter Mason, Teresa Tate VP Communications VP School Services

Highly Recommended“Having the Colorado League of Charter Schools site review and resulting work plan has been a valuable experience that I am confident will have a lasting impact on the quality and improvement of Vision Charter Academy. The communications from the beginning and continuing have been excellent, timely, and professional. The team of five, which we now refer to as the “Fab Five” were not only highly qual-ified experts in their specializations, but warm, friendly, and inviting in the interac-tions during the interviews with all aca-demic staff, the classroom visits, and the student and parent meetings.

A day we had dreaded with the sharing of the results was wonderful, because of the leadership of Kia Murray. Because she shared the not so easy to face review results in such a professional manner and followed with a doable work plan with clear root causes, goals, and action steps, our entire academic leadership team felt posi-tive, empowered, and ready to make great improvements. We are continuing with the work plan and members of the CLCS team throughout next year. The site visit, review, and work plan have already made our school better. I highly recommend this process, with these professionals for any charter school wanting to strive for excellence.”

Complexities of Identifying Students of Color for Gifted Programs Did you know there are a disproportionately low percentage of stu-dents of color in gifted and advanced programs? In this session, we will explore strategies to identify and discuss solutions to increase students of color in gifted and advanced programs. The discussion will be relevant to all educators, school leaders, teachers, coaches, special education staff, gifted and talented staff.

DEI Series:This seven-part series will be grounded in Critical Race Theory (Bell, 1992). Each session will build upon the one prior, ensuring that participants will not only gain a working knowledge of key theories and concepts, but will also have clear applications for daily interaction with culturally different adults and students. Participants will recognize how these misinterpretations lead to high turnover and suspension rates, higher office referrals and exclusionary factors for support and promotion, an overrepresen-tation of black and brown children in special education, and adults in lower performing schools.

DEI Series: Unconscious Biases and Misinterpretations of Cultural Capital (Session 1)This session will explore types of Biases that we all hold, Ste-reotype Threat (Steele, 2004) and the Model Minority Thesis (Min, 2004) resulting in the Pygmalion Effect – the self-fulfilling prophecy.

DEI Series: Growing a Culturally Responsive CMO (Session 2)This session will explore our collective histories, cultures, experi-ences & exposure and how they drive our daily interactions with others. It will include a dive into how “my” identity informs “my” daily view point and vantage points as an adult navigating “my” spaces of power, privilege and lack thereof.

DEI Series: Building Culturally Relevant Curriculum and Instructional Pathways (Session 3)This session (3) provides a framework for Culturally Relevant practices (Ladson-Billings, 2009) as key components for sus-taining a culturally competent learning environment.

DEI Series: Multicultural Curriculum Development, Planning and Implementation (Session 4)This session explores how our biases are the result of socially constructed information that we have all experienced through-out our life that teach us damaging and dangerous stereotypes and beliefs about groups not like ourselves.

The ELL offerings at the League, in partnership with the Collab-orative for Exceptional Education, focus on specific strategies to affect academic growth with our English Language Learners. Please review the options and join us for an afternoon in-person or virtually to support your ongoing professional development.

If you have any questions, please contact the League at [email protected].

Beyond the Turn and Talk: Effective ELL Strategies for In-creasing Oral Language Development, Content Mastery and EngagementResearch shows that student interaction has a myriad of benefits including increased brain stimulation, retention, and application of knowledge and engagement. While these are valuable for all students, the direct positive correlation between oral language and literacy development is particularly important for our English Language Learners. Unfortunately, most classrooms are charac-terized by excessive teacher talk. During this session, attendees will examine the root causes preventing teachers from incorpo-rating more collaboration in their lessons and effective stratgies for including more student discourse. Strategies presented in the session will address interaction protocols for a variety of teacher skill and preparation levels so there is something for every teach-er and every lesson.

Data-Driven Differentiation for ELLsParticipants will take an in-depth look at the meaning of ACCESS scores to determine and plan appropriate instruction at various proficiency levels. In doing so, teachers and leaders will develop a strong understanding of how to meet students at their current level and push them towards accelerated language acquisition and redesignation. Teachers and leaders will leave the session with strategies to make differentiation feasible and effective in busy classrooms.

Demystifying Academic LanguageGood instruction begins with the end goal in mind. In this session, teachers and leaders will closely examine the concept of academ-ic language to develop a strong understanding of the words and skills ELLs must develop in order to be successful in school and beyond. Equipped with that knowledge, participants will explore various classroom strategies and scaffolds proven to foster aca-demic language development in all four language domains.
