South Texas Health System is an integrated care system that comprises six unique hospitals, six freestanding emergency departments, multiple physician practices and a broad variety of outpatient services. We are on a journey to become nationally recognized for our clinical care and world-famous services. We are most proud to serve our friends and neighbors in the South Texas region. Whether it’s helping deliver a new addition to your family, performing a life-saving cardiovascular or neurosurgery procedure, restoring limb circulation, healing a difficult wound or performing robotic or pediatric spine surgery, we strive to achieve excellence.

The 630+ physicians who choose to practice medicine at South Texas Health System truly make us special. They bring forth the talent and dedication that bring to life our two surgical robots, our level two trauma program, our 3T MRI, our pediatric program, and our surgical services.

Through our many educational affiliations, we are training the next generation of healthcare providers including physicians, nurses, therapists and others in the allied health science programs.

Our 3000+ employees are dedicated to providing a positive experience within the hospitals. They also volunteer their time and expertise to support many nonprofit agencies, and generously donate money to support causes such as the United Way of South Texas and other social service entities.

Our 495+ volunteers donated thousands of hours last year to making sure your fellow community residents and visiting tourists had the best experience possible. Additionally, our volunteers also funded thousands of dollars in scholarships so local students can attend programs in higher education in healthcare fields.

Freestanding Emergency Departments (FEDs)

South Texas Health System’s freestanding ERs

are open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, unlike

most urgent care centers that are open just eight to

16 hours per day. All of these ERs are staffed with

medical personnel and equipped with diagnostic

technology similar to that available in South Texas

Health System’s larger facility ERs.

Emergency medical conditions treated in the FEDs

include, but are not limited to, heart attacks, strokes,

respiratory distress, head injuries, abdominal pain

and orthopedic injuries. These conditions are beyond

the scope of treatment for most urgent care centers

or night clinics.

Our neighborhood FEDs can provide stabilizing

treatment equivalent to any hospital-based ER. In

addition, the facilities offer a comprehensive range

of outpatient diagnostic and laboratory services

available. Outpatient services include digital x-rays,

computer tomography scanning, and bone density,

digital mammography (certain sites) and laboratory

tests. Diagnostic, imaging and lab appointments

are available on a same-day, walk-in basis or by

appointment, so test results are provided more

quickly. Insurance requiring authorization may

result in wait time for approval prior to

completing the scan. Discounted rates are available

for cash payments.

Advanced Stroke Certification Two of our freestanding ERs--South Texas Health

System ER Weslaco and ER Mission--demonstrated

outstanding performance, earning Advanced

Disease-Specific Care Certification for Acute

Stroke Ready Hospital from The Joint Commission

and the American Heart Association®/American

Stroke Association®.

Advanced Cardiac Care The ERs in Weslaco, Mission and Monte Cristo

are the first in Texas and the second in the nation

to be certified in emergency cardiac care by

American College of Cardiology Accreditation.

ER Just Got EasierSouth Texas Health System provides residents

of the Valley with online ER wait times and ER

Reserve capabilities for non-life-threatening illnesses

or injuries.

To find out what the ER wait time is in

every South Texas Health System ER, visit

southtexashealthsystem.com. With ER RESERVE,

request a time up to 12 hours in advance at

southtexashealthsystem.com, and then wait in the

comfort of your home.

South Texas Advanced Cardiac Care Program (STACC)For patients with Congestive Heart Failure, STACC is dedicated to providing specialized, evidence-based care.

The program offers multidisciplinary care that focuses on timely intervention, education and follow-up care to

reduce readmissions and help patients stay out of the hospital.

For more information, please call 956-926-4317.

ER Wait Time is an average provided for informational purposes only. ER Reserve should be used only if you decide your care can wait until the time you select. Do not wait if your symptoms or conditions worsen or if you need immediate care since delays may complicate your condition. If you are unsure of your condition or if your condition worsens, then please go to the nearest emergency room or call 9-1-1. Some insurance plans may not cover an ER visit if it is deemed urgent care or may apply a different copay. Please check your covered benefits with your insurance provider for details.
