CONTINUING EDUCATION

Daniel B. Spagnoli, DDS, PhDDr. Spagnoli is the author of over 30 articles and book

chapters. He has served as section editor of the Cleft Palate-

Craniofacial Journal and AAOMFS Knowledge Update. In

2005 and 2006, he co-authored two award-winning papers

published in the Journal of Periodontalology and the

Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His most recent

article, "Dental Implants and the Use of rhBMP-2," which

appeared in the May 2011 issue of Oral and Maxillofacial

Surgery Clinics of North America, was reprinted in Dental

Clinics of North America that same year. His research,

numerous lectures, and continuing education courses are

focused on temporomandibular joint disorders and surgery,

tissue engineering, and preprosthetic surgery. Dr. Spagnoli, who

was formerly the Chair at LSU-New Orleans, is now in private

practice in North Carolina.

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW

Complete digital work flow on full arch restoration with fixed and with fixed-removable hybrid prosthesisObjectives:1. To understand the complexities of a complete digital workflow for complex patients

requiring arch reconstruction/grafting and fixed implant placement2. Visualize the process that integrates, CBCT, intraoral scanning and virtual surgical

planning for these patients3. Understand the advantages and disadvantages of “in office” printed and milled

prosthesis.

Treatment of the Edentulous and Terminal Dentition Maxilla with Bone Grafts and Implants.Objectives:1. Grafting methods correlated with prosthetic options that achieve masticatory

efficiency, and esthetic restoration will be presented.2. The presentation will review clinical evaluation, Radiological evaluation and

comprehensive treatment planning.3. Implant configurations that favor graft or native bone maintenance will be discussed

in conjunction with prosthetic principles. The concept of guided implant and guide indexed prosthesis placement to gain accuracy and efficiency will be introduced.

Vertical and Transverse Alveolar Ridge Construction: Patient Specific TreatmentObjectives:1. To present a wide variety of hard and soft tissue grafting options using autogenous, allogeneic and or xenogenic material.2. Focus on personalized treatment that takes into consideration several factors

including, dentition, alveolar ridge deficiencies, prosthetic final outcome allcombined with complex medical histories.

3. Present a new concept for “layered” grafting techniques.

Richard A. Mufson, DDS Dr. Richard Mufson is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon

in private practice in North Miami Beach, Florida. He is

a graduate of Temple University School of Dentistry

in Philadelphia, PA, the post-graduate OMS residency

training at Georgetown University Medical Center in

Washington, D.C., and is a Diplomate of the American

Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. For well over 25

years, Dr. Mufson has lectured extensively on required

state-mandated courses for the practice of dentistry,

including Laws and Rules of Dentistry, Medical Errors, and

Risk Management. He is also Past President of the South

Florida District Dental Association and Florida Society of Oral

and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW

"Preventing Medical Errors/Risk Management"This lecture will satisfy the state-mandated biennial 2 Hour requirement for prevention of medical errors, and will include information on the occurrence, prevalence, and scope of problem of medical errors within our health care system, in addition to discussion of root cause analysis, patient safety, and prevention and reduction of errors potentially resulting in patient harm.

There will also be an emphasis on the topic of risk management, including techniques and methods of practice designed to lower the risk of a patient initiating a lawsuit, and reducing the likelihood of a plaintiff prevailing in the event a lawsuit is filed. Also utilizing a "best of" approach to important concepts taught to us over many years by OMSNIC, and others from personal observation, the information will be combined, collated, and uniquely presented in the format of an "algorithm" specifically designed to prevent and defend three relatively common and representative categories of potential lawsuits we face in our daily practice.

Learning ObjectivesThis course will consist of sharing and learning information for the purpose of incorporating into our daily practice:

(1) Techniques designed to increase awareness of, and prevent, medical errors

(2) Techniques designed to (a) lower the risk and/or likelihood of a lawsuit, or in the event of a legal claim against us, (b) lower right risk and/or likelihood of the plaintiff prevailing

(3) An algorithm for reducing patient injury and/or associated legal claims, using as examples three types of claims OMS are called upon to defend: lingual nerve injury, IA nerve injury, and TMJ
