RULES AND GENERAL CONDITIONS OF COMPETITION
• In all sections where fewer than three (3) entries are received, the award of first or
any other prize will be left to the discretion of the adjudicator. In sections where
there is only one (1) entrant, a trophy will be awarded only if the mark received is
over 80. All entrants perform entirely at their own risk.
• The entrant’s age is recognised as their age on the first day of May each year.
Entrants in sections limited to age must be prepared to submit proof of age if
required to do so.
• Open sections in Speech and Drama are open to entrants 16 years of age and
over.
• Unless otherwise stated, only one item may be performed in each section by an
entrant.
• An entrant MUST NOT REPEAT ANY ITEM with which he or she has won first
place in any previous Gunnedah Eisteddfod unless it is a “Set Piece”.
• No contestant may say a poem as “Own Choice” if it is a “Set Piece” in the current
Eisteddfod.
• NO ENTRANT WILL BE ALLOWED TO PERFORM THE SAME ITEM IN MORE
THAN ONE SECTION.
• No deferment of adjudication to a later session will be permitted. Deferment within
a session will be at the discretion of the adjudicator.
• The committee reserves the right to appoint a substitute adjudicator.
• An adjudicator’s decision is FINAL.
• Any protest or objection arising shall be lodged with the relevant convener in writing
within thirty minutes of the cause of complaint and must be accompanied by a
deposit of $10. If the protest is upheld the deposit will be refunded.
• Sheets will be available fifteen (15) minutes after the conclusion of the session and
are the responsibility of the entrant.
• Copies of “Own Choice” selections will remain the property of the Gunnedah
Eisteddfod Society (Inc).
• Conveners reserve the right to ban video cameras if in breach of copyright laws
Speech & Drama Adjudicator
for 2019
Annelise McCarthy
Annelise is a teacher, coach and adjudicator of the spoken word and has been involved in
the Speech & Drama industry for over 12 years. She started training at the age of 8
through the Australian Speech and Communication Association (ASCA). Upon
graduation, she was awarded a high distinction in the ASCA Diploma of
Communications and received 100% in her ASCA Diploma of Speech.
Annelise represented NSW in the Australian Individual Debating and Public Speaking
Challenge (AIDPSC) held in Brisbane (2014) and in Melbourne (2015). In 2014,
Annelise placed 2nd in Persuasive Speaking and was Australia’s highest-ranking female
competitor in open competition. In 2016, Annelise continued to represent Australia at the
World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (WIDPSC) held in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Competing in After-Dinner Speaking, she placed 5th in
the World.
Annelise adjudicates at both state and national level. She has adjudicated prestigious
competitions including the Sydney Eisteddfod (2018) and the World Individual Debating
and Public Speaking Championships (2017). She currently coaches’ members of a
national school team and teaches Speech to both primary and high school students.
Annelise is immensely passionate about the spoken word and continues to feel
encouraged by the overwhelming display of verbal and artistic flair, talent and skills
demonstrated by young people.

Names will be draw from a hat to determine order of participants Individual marks are kept and schools receive an overall tally at the
completion of the night’s event. The school with the highest score is the winner of the evening.
Individual prizes will be given for each grade level. All students will receive a certificate of participation.
