1717 Hilton Head Island’s first settler, “Tuscarora Jack” Barnwell founded Point Place Plantation.

1790 William Elliot grew the first successful crop of sea island cotton at Myrtle Bank Plantation, formerly Point Place Plantation.

2000 B.C. – 1400 A.D.Remnants of oyster shells discarded by Native Americans can be found in present-day Sea Pines Forest Preserve and the Green’s Shell Ring Enclosure Heritage Preserve.

1766 By now, there were 25 plantations on Hilton Head Island. Indigo was the primary crop, but rice and sugarcane were also grown with slave labor.

1663 Hired by West Indian plantation owners, Capt. Wm. Hilton sailed from Barbados to explore the coast of "Carolina." In his journal he mentioned a navigational marker at the entrance to Port Royal Sound. Mapmakers listed this as Hilton's Head.

EUROPEAN EXPLORATION AND SETTLEMENTS EARLY AMERICANNATIVE AMERICAN

1566 On Parris Island, Santa Elena was founded as the first colonial capital of Spanish Florida.

1861On April 12, the Civil War began with Confederates firing on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. In June, construction on the Confederate Fort Walker began. In November, 12,653 Union troops came ashore on Hilton Head Island, the largest amphibious landing by American forces until WWII.

1775 – 1783The Revolutionary War: Hilton Head Islanders sided with colonists and skirmished with the British Loyalists from nearby Daufuskie Island. Four Revolutionary War soldiers are now buried or memorialized at the Zion Cemetery.


2017 Hilton Head Island’s permanent population: 39,000. Hilton Head Island’s annual visitors: 2.74 million. The vacation destination continues to receive accolades for environmental protection, land planning, resort properties, beaches, and sports facilities.

1969 Harbour Town Village was completed. Arnold Palmer won the inaugural Heritage Golf Tournament.

1950 Lumbermen from Hinesville, Georgia, built sawmills and purchased 8,400 acres on the island to harvest the sea pines.

1956 Byrnes Bridge was constructed to connect the island to the mainland. Charles Fraser began developing Sea Pines Plantation. Oceanfront lots sold for $5,350. Hilton Head Inn

opened on South Forest Beach. The island's first grocery store opened at Coligny Plaza.

1862 Upon arriving on the island to take command of the Department of the South, General Ormsby Mitchel was appalled at the living conditions of the former slaves now working at the fort. He set aside some land and laid out streets and lots, thereby founding the town of Mitchelville, America’s first self-governing town of formerly enslaved people.

1868 – 1950 When the Army left, so did the jobs for the Mitchelville citizens. In order to survive through fishing and farming, Gullah people moved from their half-acre Mitchelville lots to other parts of the island.

1889 – 1930Tracts of land were purchased by private citizens for hunting preserves. In 1912, the Hudson and Toomer families began operating oyster factories.

For more than 300 years, the Gullah, descendants of slaves, have lived in the Lowcountry of

South Carolina. Brought against their will from West and Central Africa, they endured hardship and heartbreak. After emancipation, they made a new home on the Daufuskie and Saint Helena sea islands. These native islanders and their ancient culture remain a vibrant thread in the fabric of Hilton Head Island life.

After the Civil War and well into the 20th century, the Gullah community continued to live in relative isolation on islands with no bridges and little contact with the mainland. Fishing, oystering, and farming were the way of life. Much of the Lowcountry’s beloved food culture originated with the Gullah — rice purlo, okra gumbo, shrimp and gravy, cooked with spices and time-honored African cooking methods.

The rich Gullah creole dialect, a distinctive mixture of English and African languages, is still spoken and written. One of the best-known

Gullah expressions, “Kumbaya,” translated “come by here,” found its way into a famous folk song. And Gullah sweetgrass baskets, treasured for their beauty and artistry, are sewn by hand today as they were in the 18th century.

Spiritual life remains at the heart of Gullah culture. Small historic praise houses are tucked under majestic oak trees along sandy lanes on the Lowcountry sea islands, and the New Testament has been translated into Gullah.

Historic Mitchelville, located on Hilton Head Island’s Port Royal Sound, was America’s first self-governed town of freed slaves. Established in 1862 by General Ormsby Mitchel, the commander of the Union forces that occupied Hilton Head Island, the town was built by and for formerly enslaved people who were granted their freedom, prior to the Emancipation Proclamation, in the Port Royal Experiment. descendants of Mitchelville, continue to tell their story through the Mitchelville Freedom Park and the Mitchelville Preservation Project.

Ancestral traditions of food, worship, crafts, and storytelling are honored each February during the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration (January 31–February 24, 2019). Other ways to explore the culture include The Gullah Heritage Trail Tours, the Gullah Museum, and the Heritage Library. Local experts on Gullah culture lead a Daufuskie Island tour. The Penn Center, on Saint Helena Island, includes a museum that chronicles the Gullah through the centuries.

The Town of Hilton Head Island has placed signage to mark entry into 12 historic Gullah neighborhoods, not only to bring awareness of the Gullah way of life in the Lowcountry but also to assist in preserving the rich past and importance of this centuries old culture.

Preserving History for All

Since 2003, the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head has been committed to reviving, restoring, and preserving Gullah customs, traditions, language, stories, songs, and structures on the island. The museum was named No. 3 in the state as the most visited Heritage Cultural Attraction by the Lowcountry and Resorts Island Tourism survey in 2018. Captain William Hilton, the first Englishman to step foot on the island that he later named

Hilton Head Island, recorded in his ship’s diary in 1663: “The air is clean and sweet, the country very pleasant and delightful.”

Charles Fraser, the forward-thinking developer and planner who came to the island almost three hundred years later, paid homage to this early explorer by establishing the highest land-planning standards to keep this lush sea island clean and vibrant for the thousands of residents and visitors who enjoy it every year. The guiding principle of the Hilton Head Island land-use formula, which was reverence and maintenance for the natural environment, was considered unconventional and progressive when Sea Pines, Hilton Head Island's first planned community, was imagined by Fraser in the early 1950s.

A Yale law student from Hinesville, Georgia, Fraser was a member of the family that held an interest on then-undeveloped Hilton Head Island. He recognized the stunning, abundant beauty of the large, unspoiled island, and he traveled the world with

architects and planners to discover the best use for this land.

Harbour Town, the iconic Sea Pines enclave with gleaming yachts, pastel-colored villas, cobbled courtyards, and its candy-cane striped lighthouse, was inspired by Fraser’s visits to the ancient Portofino harbor on the Italian Riviera.

It was given the name Harbour Town to evoke the charming spirit of sunny European harbor towns. And thus Sea Pines — with miles of oceanfront, majestic mossy oaks, and woodland expanses of pine and palmetto trees — became the gem of American resorts. Its championship golf courses, hotels, homes, and villas, designed and created under the guidance of Fraser and those who came after him, established the island as a premier residential community and resort destination.

This Hilton Head Island design aesthetic has stood the test of time, and that legacy lives on today. Wetlands are protected, and beaches and waterways are maintained in pristine condition. Earth tones and natural building materials prevail, and strict architectural standards are in harmony with the natural habitat. Sea birds nest as they did a millennia ago, while deer and foxes and other Lowcountry creatures still wander the forest. Dolphins, shrimp, and blue crabs fill the waters. Nature has been good to Hilton Head Island. Fraser’s vision and dedication have honored these natural gifts and set in motion a way of life that continues today.

Hilton Head Island, award-winning for its inviting beaches, topflight recreation,

and premier resorts, also holds the outstanding designation as one of the country’s first resort destinations to account for preservation of the natural environment in its master design plan. Moreover, it’s one of the country’s few municipalities to be designated as an Audubon International Certified Sustainable Community.

As a guiding principle of development, the town government, developers, and planners are dedicated to the guardianship of all natural resources — water, land, and wildlife.

Amid Hilton Head Island’s sand dunes, freshwater wetlands, salt marshes, and maritime forests, some of the resident wildlife includes bottlenose dolphins, alligators, loggerhead sea turtles, and a rich variety of more than 220 species of birds. You’ll spot manatees in the summer and bald eagles in the winter, and you’re likely to see white-tailed deer, egrets, and sea otters.

Bird watchers come to Hilton Head Island just to catch a glimpse of the

neotropical migrant birds known as painted buntings. Other migratory birds, such as the endangered red knots, use the island as a stopping point along their journey.

Callawassie Island, a nearby Lowcountry river island with hundreds of Backyard Wildlife Habitats, was the first Certified Wildlife Habitat Community in the state. Great egrets and great blue herons abound, and bald eagles have nested on Callawassie for many years.

“It is so good that we can develop an area and still have these species that are not only an inspiration and a great sight, but also play a role in the environment,” says Carlos Chacon, manager of natural history at Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn.

The island’s successful management of loggerhead sea turtle nesting season has led to loggerheads nesting in record numbers in recent years.

Dawn Brut, the museum’s curator of education, encourages everyone to be aware of the nesting season. From May 1 to October 31, locals and visitors are asked to turn off lights, to cover up beach holes, and pick up their belongings on the beach so the

hatchlings do not get lost during their journey home to the ocean.

Charles Fraser, the island’s original resort developer, had a vision of establishing Hilton Head Island as an exceptional resort community while maintaining the natural beauty of the Lowcountry surroundings. Since the development of The Sea Pines Resort, his vision has been preserved over the past five decades. Thanks to that foresight, visitors today and in the future can experience this unique island that marries development and conservation.

There may be no better way to experience the Lowcountry’s gentle allure than with a leisurely

stroll down Bluffton’s centuries old streets. Listed on the National Register of Historic places, the one square mile of Old Town Bluffton is lined with moss draped live oak trees, offering a delightful glimpse into the past. Boutiques, restaurants and galleries stand side by side with demure cottages and genteel homes, many dating to the early 1800s. The district also has the distinction of being

selected as an official Cultural District by the South Carolina Arts Commission due to its abundance of arts and cultural offerings.

If a slow walk through a small Southern town is your idea of time well spent, then I recommend the Bluffton Walking Tour, which begins at the Heyward House History Center, an 1840s farmhouse-turned-museum that doubles as the town’s welcome center.

I spent a lovely morning with docent Anne Heyward, a native Blufftonian who regularly guides history and

architecture buffs on walking tours through her hometown. As we ambled along under the shade of lustrous palmettos, Ms. Heyward transported me back to her town’s beginnings. Bluffton was a tiny village lounging on the banks of the May River, founded by folks eager to enjoy the breezes and escape the Lowcountry summer heat.

Of Bluffton’s 60 homes, churches, and businesses, just 15 remained after Union forces razed the town in 1863. Thankfully, all of the town’s residents escaped before the Union gunboats

headed up the river. After the dust settled, eight antebellum homes and two churches stood unharmed: The Church of the Cross (ca. 1854), and the Campbell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1853.

I was amazed at the sweeping river view from the imposing Huger-Gordon House, one of Bluffton’s oldest homes, today a private residence. A section of the house dates back to 1795, and scars around the front door are permanent reminders of the shelling from Civil War guns.

My walking tour continued down Bridge Street to the three-story 1830s Fripp House, with its stately porch and white fence. Next stop, the Card House, where legend has it that the house changed hands in an 1840s high-stakes poker game.

“Losing houses in poker games is a long-standing Southern tradition,” laughs Ms. Heyward.

Meandering down Calhoun Street, my mind took me back 150 years, and I imagined folks sipping sweet tea in rocking chairs on the Seven Oaks

verandah. (Not a bad way to spend a day in 2019, either.)

A few blocks down Calhoun, we arrived at The Store, built in 1904 as a family home and store. Today, it’s owned by Babbie Guscio, a Blufftonian for more than four decades. “When I first arrived, Bluffton to me was a blank canvas,” says Ms. Guscio. “I, as many others, discovered we could paint a beautiful picture.”

The first step off the ferry onto Daufuskie Island is a step back in time. Roughly one-sixth the size of Hilton Head Island, Daufuskie is five miles long by two

miles wide. Time seems to move slower here, and that’s a good thing if you’ve come for a day trip. There’s lots to take in before taking the boat back across Calibogue Sound.

Rustic, beautiful and somewhat otherworldly, most of Daufuskie Island has remained virtually undisturbed for decades. Cars are restricted and there is a tiny grocery store. Native American artifacts, including arrowheads and pieces of centuries-old pottery are frequently unearthed on the island’s beaches. Daufuskie is also home to the private Haig Point community which offers top-notch amenities for its few hundred residents.

On summer weekends, Freeport Marina is a guaranteed good time. Visitors arrive via the public ferry from Broad Creek Marina to eat and drink at the Old Daufuskie Crab Company, dance the day away to live music, play cornhole, explore Freeport, and enjoy the serene public beach that looks across Calibogue Sound toward Hilton Head Island.

Near the marina is a general store, a few cottages for rent, and a handful of shops including Wine & Woodworks — a quirky combination that captures the essence of the island — comprise something of a town center. It’s been 15 years since Orchid Paulmeier opened her first restaurant, One Hot Mama’s, on Hilton Head

Island. In that time, she has crafted signature barbecue sauces and dry rubs, been a finalist on “Next Food Network Star,” served as the 2016 South Carolina Chef Ambassador, and cooked for the James Beard House in Manhattan.

Raised in Chicago’s close-knit Filipino community, Paulmeier is well-versed in mixing and matching different cuisines. And that’s why when it comes to Hilton Head Island, Paulmeier is quick to clarify that while its food culture will always be rooted in Lowcountry coastal fare, the region’s infusion of other influences is only enhancing local menus.

“From barbecue to seafood, the island is about what’s fresh and readily available,” explains Paulmeier, who proudly adds that her restaurants are Certified South Carolina, which means at least 25 percent of ingredients come from in-season, South Carolina-grown products. “But dabbling in other flavor profiles, such as Latin and Asian, allows us to expand the definition of Lowcountry dining.”

Every region has its own culinary culture, and on this island, it’s very dependent on our vacationers,”

explains Sean Carroll, resort executive chef at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort. “But the thing that will always ring true in this area is great local seafood.”

At Alexander’s Restaurant & Wine Bar — where classic Lowcountry dishes make up most of the menu—the focus is on freshness. “If you can present a plate to a guest and tell them which boat their fish came in on, or the fact that their honey is local to South Carolina, the dish is just going to taste better,” explains the Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef.

But supporting area farmers and fishers is just the start. Having worked at places like the Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina, Carroll is passionate about prioritizing hospitality. Alexander’s, for example, is an island mainstay, and while its chefs can showcase their creativity with the catch of the day, Carroll ensures that staples like the traditional Wiener schnitzel, a breaded veal cutlet, continue to please regulars. “From our food to our service, at the end of the day, it’s all about creating that memorable guest experience.”

Philippe Feret already had a renowned career in the kitchen when he moved here to open

Hilton Head Social Bakery two years ago. Previously the executive chef of Manhattan’s Windows on the World, Feret was used to crafting menus for a diverse clientele.

“This island brings in people from all different parts of the world, too,” he says, “which gives us a captive, cultural audience that’s either accustomed to the more upscale pastries and desserts from the bigger cities they’ve come from, or people that are eager to try the types of dishes they’ve seen featured on television.”

As I make my way down to the Outside Hilton Head kiosk at Shelter Cove Marina, the sun

begins its descent and a gorgeous Lowcountry evening settles over the water. Before we board our boat for this evening’s dolphin cruise, we’re treated to a magnificent sight — a manatee floating around the marina, performing somersaults for captivated onlookers. Our tour guide, Kat, tells us these “sea cows” migrate north from the Caribbean each summer, and the same ones often make their way up to the marina year after year.

We board Outside Explorer, a 24-foot custom Carolina skiff, and Kat makes sure all the kids have their lifejackets fastened before pushing away from the dock. Fellow Outside staffers keep an eye on the manatee to ensure it’s

this is island life at its finest — a low-speed excursion immersed in nature’s beauty. No one offers more options for exploring the coast than Outside Hilton Head. Founder and CEO Mike Overton started the company as a windsurfing school in the late-1970s, and he recalls the first time he met Hilton Head Island visionary Charles Fraser. To this day, their conversation guides Outside Hilton Head’s mission.

“One thing he said that really stuck with me is, if you really want people to connect to this area, it’s all about the tides,” Overton recalls. “All the area has to offer — the history, culture, literature — all of it connects to the tides.”

No matter how many times you join one of Outside Hilton Head’s excursions — whether it’s a kayak tour, a dolphin cruise, or a stand-up paddleboarding tour — the experience will always be unique. According to Overton, it all depends on the time of year, the time of day, the weather, and a host of other factors. Seeing Hilton Head Island from the water offers a whole new perspective.

“I think for the visitor, until they truly get a different point of view from the marsh looking back on the island, they don’t really get it,” Overton says. “Our goal is to ensure that when somebody leaves here, they leave saying, ‘Wow, this is a pretty cool place,’ and that we’ve helped them connect with it.”

We’re treated to a wildlife panorama as we putter toward Broad Creek. An egret here, a heron there, and then, a rare treat — you know it’s rare when your tour guide gets excited — a roseate spoonbill fishing in the flats. Seconds later, frolicking dolphins pop in and out of the water, and we scan the smooth surface for their next appearance.

When the stage lit up for the first time this fall at SoundWaves, Hilton

Head Symphony Orchestra’s new performance venue, the audience was treated to a dramatic multimedia concert that blended rich orchestral music with video of Lowcountry vistas. The innovative SoundWaves is the perfect place for intimate and interactive performances.

More than 135,000 spectators watched live as Satoshi Kodaira took home the winning trophy, joining the list of golfing greats that includes Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Bernhard Langer, Johnny Miller, Greg Norman, Nick Price, Tom Watson, Davis Love, III, and Payne Stewart.

“I did always want to play here,” Kodaira says. “I was aware that the first tournament was won by Mr. Palmer, and I understand there are a lot of great players who have won here. Being among that group is an honor.”

Held the week after the Masters, the RBC Heritage was one of just five PGA TOUR events to celebrate 50 years.

Q: W hy was Hilton Head Island your ideal location?A: Zach grew up in Bluffton, and I grew up on Hilton Head.

Both of us love the outdoors — we spend almost every weekend on the beach or out on the boat. We wanted a ceremony and reception that really reflected us and our history with the Lowcountry. When we saw the gorgeous Honey Horn property with its ancient oak trees and romantic hanging moss, we couldn’t pass it up.

Q: What advice would you give to a couple planning a wedding on Hilton Head Island?A: There is much natural outdoor beauty here. Try to take

advantage of that! May is a beautiful time of year — not too hot, low humidity, the weather was perfect.

Q: How did you incorporate elements from the Lowcountry in your wedding?A: I loved all the little natural details. Zach and I went to

the Bluffton Oyster Factory and hand selected all of the oyster shells that we used for placeholders. Then I

bleached them, painted them, and one by one wrote out each guest’s name. Overall, we wanted the décor to be very natural and romantic; we didn’t want anything to feel stuffy. With the centerpieces and bouquets, there was lots of wispy greenery. And for our honeymoon send-off, instead of rice or sparklers, our guests tossed lavender.

What drew you to Hilton Head Island?John: It’s hard to articulate — it’s just magical. And when you come on vacation, you want to come back year after year.
