She trained as a veterinary pathologist, then received her PhD investigating chronic wasting disease (CWD) in mule deer at Colorado State University with Dr. Edward Hoover. Her post-doctoral research utilized new transgenic mouse models to study how prion structure impacts cross- species prion transmission at the University of Zürich with Dr. Adriano Aguzzi. She then joined the faculty at UC San Diego where her lab discovered PrP structural barriers that limit CWD conversion of human PrP. Her lab investigates the structural determinants of prions that govern conversion, conformation, and propagation through the CNS. She and her colleagues have discovered key features on the transmission and pathogenesis of chronic wasting disease in deer as well as the key interacting segments of the prion protein that control prion conversion, strains, and species barriers.
