C Marra Residence4601 Downers Dr • Downers Grove, IL 60515Guido Marra always wanted a koi pond and that’s exactly what he got, plus a little more. A beautiful koi pond flows right up to the patio where 3 basalt fountain columns splash playfully. The pond empties into a waterfall that wraps around the back of the house, complete with an Irish bridge to entice further exploring. A rainwater harvesting system rounds out this backyard graced with a water feature extraordinaire. Mom claims the pond and waterfall are better than any playground in the area, keeping the kids and their friends occupied for hours. Of course, Mom and Dad love entertaining on the patio and enjoy pondside meals whenever possible. At night, the couple can peacefully fall asleep to the sound of the waterfalls located right outside their bedroom window.

A Wild Birds Unlimited1601 Ogden Ave • Lisle, IL 60532Bird and humans alike enjoy the beautiful 12-foot long waterfall at Wild Birds Unlimited. Created with popular moss rock, the waterfall draws birds to get refreshed by drinking and bathing in the cool water that cascades over the rocks.

Koors Residence4420 Downers Dr • Downers Grove, IL 60515Julie and Dan Koors landscaped their entire yard in 2010 and a water feature was always part of their backyard plan. The one must-have on their list was the ability to enjoy the sound of their Pondless Waterfall from inside the home, as well as being able to view it from indoors. A year after the feature was installed by a local landscaper; Aquascape Construction was called upon to create more natural beauty by redesigning the waterfalls with different rocks and boulders. Children, dogs, birds, and frogs all enjoy the water feature throughout the warmer months. In winter, the Koors enjoy unique ice formations created by the freezing water and glow of nighttime lighting.

E Reid Residence121 Fourth St • Downers Grove, IL 60515Make no mistake. Nineteen year old Goldie is the queen of this royal pond, swimming below the surface of the water as she glides up to greet the Reids near the feeding spot off the deck. Her 30-inch, 20 lb. golden finned body moves quickly and creates waves as the other koi jockey for position at feeding time. Bill Reid is an avid gardener, while his brother Wayne enjoys animals of all kinds, and their backyard sanctuary is a testament to both of these pleasures. You can’t see the entire pond from any one location in the yard; rather, it weaves its way for 70 feet among the plants and trees. Lingering in this landscape, you’d never know you were smack dab in the middle of suburbia. The brothers enjoy countless hours feeding their fish and watching birds of all sorts bathe in the gentle stream.

An herb garden hugs the perimeter of the Latshaw pond that comes complete with a bog garden. Birds enjoy bathing in the bog while koi swim happily throughout the backyard pond. Brian Helfrich of Aquascape Construction is a neighbor of the Latshaws and they fell in love with his mother’s pond. Their pond has a bridge that beckons you to fully explore the feature and the surrounding landscaping. The family enjoys the wonderful sound of the waterfalls from inside the house and can’t get enough of the view from the patio.
