1 The Spirit The Spirit On Sunday, our children are leading us in service. Last Sunday, during our children’s time, I used every stole I have to clothe our children in the truth that they are called as ministers of Christ. I have been asked what I meant by saying that they were not allowed to wear them. In our denomination stoles are usually reserved for people ordained or installed to lead a church in worship. Of course, we believe that all of us are called to be ministers. All of us are created to tell each other about the love of God and to love one another. All of us have this holy work to do. Sometimes the work feels exhausting, as if we are fighting against the endless waves of the ocean as children playing along the shore. Sometimes it feels no matter how much we do it does not change a thing. I recall once watching children at a beach, pushing against the waves, pretending to push them back over and over again, tiring themselves out. I knew that later that night they would sleep as soundly as possible while probably having that strange feeling of still being pulled to and fro by waves they were no longer in. Like children often do at the beach, they laughed and were delighted by the endless game of struggling against the waves. They were shouting to each other about saving the adults from the ocean’s relentless onslaught. As one boy came out of the water his father said, “Did you win?” “Oh yeah dad!” “But the waves are still coming in,” the father said. “And I am still standing,” the boy said in reply. The work of love is never done. We leave the day wondering if anything we did made a difference sometimes, but we are still standing. Children often get this better than adults do. In their own way they are better ministers than I will ever be. It is why I am glad they are leading us in service this Sunday. There are the days when I wonder what difference it all makes, jaded by the trials of living. The optimism of youth is a great elixir. My daughter told me she cannot wait for Sunday, “I get to do gymnastics in church daddy!” “Is that what God wants you to do?” I asked. She looked at me as only a seven-year-old girl can look at her father, full of fake exhaustion at the absurdity of such a question, “Of course! God wants my best so I am going to give it!” My son is learning his lines. “I think I have more lines than anyone else.” “You nervous?” I asked him. “Yeah… but the people there love me and God loves me so it’ll be okay even if I mess up.” I needed to hear this from them. I needed their joy, their hope, their delight. We all do really. Jesus said, “Unless you know the kingdom like a child you’ll never get it.” I am grateful they will lead us in worship. Maybe, when they are done, I will get it again for the first time. Riding the wave of the Holy Spirit, Garrett

The Spirit On Sunday, our children are leading us in service. QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS (QCDs) FROM IRAS.

Are you, or a friend or family member, 70 1/2 or older and subject to required minimum distributions from your IRA? If so, you can make your charitable donation to St. Andrew (or other charities ) directly from your IRA and there can be benefits from doing so.

What is the benefit? Normally, when you take money out of your IRA, it is a taxable event. The withdrawal adds to your taxable income and inflates your adjusted gross income (AGI). Then, if you itemize and give the same amount to charity, the charitable gift reduces your taxable income by the amount of the gift, but it does not reduce your AGI.

This can be of significance to some people because there can be negative consequencesto a higher AGI. Just some examples: the net investment income Medicare surtax, Medicare premium costs, the taxability of Social Security income, some credit phase-outs all factor off your AGI.

Another benefit is that those who donate by way of a QCD don't have to itemize at tax time to still get a tax break on their giving. While a QCD is not a complicated process, it must be done correctly to keep the IRS happy. Your broker or your investment company can assist you with the correct procedure. St. Andrew already has a few members who have donated this way and so the office is familiar with this option. You can find more details about QCDs on the internet just by typing in Qualified Charitable Distributions.

In short, a QCD isn't about giving more money to charity to get a better tax deduction. It is about the possibility of paying less tax when giving the same amount to charity. If you know other people who might be interested in this option, please share this with them.

Fighting Cancer: Jim Leonard welcomes prayers for Sue Mannshardt and her husband Mike, who is undergoing treatment for bladder cancer. Our Christian-Brother, and fellow Deacon, Bill Elliot, requests prayers for his family member Westin Lord fighting leukemia. Fighting Long-Term Illness: Joe Becker requests prayers for his wife Joan (who is registered as Helen Becker). She has been transferred to River Valley Care Center, which is a half mile south of Live Oak at 9000 Larkin Rd., for continued healing of her problems. Thus she still needs our Lords help through our Prayers. Werner Keim requests prayers of recovery and well-being for his niece Allison Sargent, who has a spinal vertebrae problem. Marcie Simmons requests prayers for Barbara Breen & brother Rick Perry.

Both pilots were good friends. Prayers for all the families. Clarice Darling requests prayers for both Judy Wells and her son George, who lost his wife Rachel to cancer. Marcie Simmons requests prayers for Bill Howell, who recently lost a dear friend.

Concerns: Lee Pumel requests prayers for the Pumel family. Marcie Simmons requests prayers for Dorothy Thompson, and her daughter-in-law Dennise Simmons, as well as the homeless, caretakers and drugs. In the Military: Heather Cowell - Navy

St. Andrew Prayer Chain Some members of our congregation are not aware that we have a prayer chain group of praying warriors, that is facilitated by the Deacons of the church. The group has nearly 100 active participants. So, that in mind, please feel invited to submit prayer requests for anyone that is: 1. In need of group prayer; and 2. Is aware that their name and condition will be published throughout the prayer chain; and 3. Agrees with, and approves that release of information through the prayer chain.
