October 17, 2019 1 1 The Spirit The Spirit “Sunday is coming,” shouted the preacher over and over again on Good Friday. The preacher was speaking of the horrors of the cross, what the Christ was going through, and looking ahead to Easter, reminding those gathered, “But Sunday is coming!” The refrain voiced the great promises of God that are always present. In this world of beauty and terror, of grace and violence, of hope and despair, of joy and apathy, Sunday is coming, God is doing something, God is always doing something. Sometimes we can’t see it. Sometimes we stop believing it. Years ago I was preaching, and voiced some line I stole from some book I can’t remember and said, “Despite all evidence to the contrary, despite the wars of nations and wars of words, despite all the things that claim hate and violence will win, God will win the contest of history.” The line I stole was, “God will win the contest of history.” I remember reading it the first time and being struck by it. What hope? What joy? What faith?! Sometimes I have that faith, it is strong and confident. Sometimes I am certain God is up to something. Sometimes I expect to see God around each corner that I turn. And, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I think to myself, “I thought I would see God there, but again, no.” There are times we are confident in faith that we fight the good fight, pressing on with great expectation to experience great things. Then the way gets hard, the work moves slow, the trials and temptations to overcome and many and terrible, the things we wish to change do not change, and our zeal and passion wane. For thousands of years prophets have been screaming with blessed assurance, “God is about to do a new thing!” “Do you not know, have you not heard, the God of the universe will not grow tired or weary!” But, sometimes I will grow tired and weary. Then the preacher voices arises, some modern-day prophet, Spirit-filled and shouting, “Sunday is coming!” Right now I have that faith. Sunday is coming, dear one. God is moving my sister, God is dancing my brother. I know all too well that the times have been hard. I know that we have seen divisions break apart our country, our community, our families, our churches even. I know we have seen great violence that only begets more violence. I know we have seen tragedy and terror, always mixed with beauty, but the beauty certainly seems more fleeting. I know it, but I also know that God is love, resurrection, hope, and goodness. Sunday is coming and I hope you are in church this Sunday especially. We are doing our worship celebration differently. We are going to stand toe to toe with the pain, look it in the eye, not turn away, but discover that we stand with the Crucified Christ. We stand with the One that death cannot conquer, that hate cannot extinguish, and that violence cannot keep buried. We stand with the One that took the worst the world has to offer, the One whose family thought had gone mad, the One whose friends betrayed and abandoned him, the One who felt as if God had forsaken him, till he hanged on a cross broken and yet victorious… we stand with him who has defeated the world and whispers to us in the tempest, “Do not be afraid, for there is nothing in all of creation that is not temporary for God! Go forth with me into places angels fear to tread and know that God will complete the good work that has been started in you. Sunday is coming!” I won’t tell you all about what this worship service will be like. But you will not hear music when you enter the sanctuary on Sunday. Look instead for the broken Christ, who gives himself for broken people… Sunday is coming. Riding the wave of the Holy Spirit, Garrett

Dear Church family, earlier this week we had reached out to ask for help for a beloved sister in need of short-term financial assistance. Through your help in our compassionate ministry effort, the church was able to offer the assistance needed. We are so filled with gratitude to all of you who took the time to respond to this effort. She is also extremely appreciative of your acts of kindness towards her. Thank you all so much! You are an awesome family! St. Andrew Staff
