November 7, 2019 1 1 The Spirit The Spirit Please allow me a moment to thank you. Thursday evening of last week my son watched our dog get hit and killed by a car. I got a phone call while still in a meeting, with my son and wife weeping right after it happened. Friday and Saturday were hard. The dog’s name was Geronimo. We got her before my daughter was a year old and shortly after my son broke his leg when he was 3. I hope I never forget the day we picked him up from daycare, a blue cast covering most of his leg, sitting in a wheelchair, and took him outside to meet his puppy. It is a delight to see such joy pour from young ones. They fell in love right away. Geronimo slept with him most nights, and he took care of that dog with the rest of the family when she suffered from an illness that paralyzed her. Sometimes we begin to think the love of God is reserved for people, but the joy of people with their pets is we realize that God’s love is for all of creation. Jesus reminds us that God cares for the sparrows, the flowers, and everything else. My heart broke for my not so little boy whose broken heart made him a little boy again. My daughter drew pictures of her dog as she cried about never being able to hold her again. My wife and I both felt the emptiness in the house and shared tears, too. Then Sunday was coming. Some people knew and some didn’t know, but we decided to sit as a family together on Sunday. We just wanted to be together. During the greeting time my family didn’t move far from the row we were sitting in, because people came up to them and gave them a lot of love. There were condolences and people listening to my kids share a bit of their story. There have been messages and people checking up. In short there has been love. I hope that everyone who is going through a hard time can feel some of that love. I know others are going through things, I know that many of us are going through things, and I hope that when we know someone else is going through a hard time we give them love. On Sunday we got home from church and we felt the love from you. Certainly, my kids were still sad, they should be, but they also knew that others were sad for them. An old proverb says, “Share your grief and your grief is halved, share your joy and your joy is doubled.” Each Sunday we come together and share our grief and our joy. This is such a healing moment if we pay attention to it. Yesterday my kids came home from school and there was a sign held by elves when they walked in the house that said, “Santa says please go to the fire place.” When they went, there was a puppy in a cage with a letter from Santa explaining that this puppy was found outside Santa’s house and he didn’t know where it came from. St. Nicholas of course is the patron saint of children in the Catholic and Orthodox traditions. So not knowing what to do with the puppy, Santa talked to God. In the letter Santa said God suggested the puppy go to a family that recently lost their dog, telling Santa that their dog Geronimo knows that they would love this puppy and needed his love. My daughter was immediately on cloud nine. My son at first was sad but then this puppy walked right up to him. As I sat with him later I asked him how he was feeling. “Lots of ways,” he said, “both sad and glad.” Then this new puppy, Ernest Hemingway is his name according to Santa, licked my son’s hand and snuggled close to him. “It looks like that puppy needed your love,” I said to him. “I needed his love daddy,” my son said. We all need love. Thank you for loving my family, we need it. Thank you for the ways you love others, they need it. Thank you for loving, the world needs it. Santa signed off the letter with, “Give your love away, and you’ll get so much back.” May we all give our love away and feel God pour more and more love into us that we may give more and more away. Riding the wave of the Holy Spirit, Garrett

STEWARDSHIP-SUSTAINING THE CHURCH

Submitted by Stewardship/Finance Team

There are many ways to give to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and giving should be a way of life for all Christians. In whatever form your giving comes—time, talent, or financial gifts—it’s necessary in order to pursue our missions and spread God’s word.

Your generosity is a blessing and you may want to plan now to have a significant impact this year. Here are some popular ways to plan your year-end gifts, several of which offer attractive tax benefits.

Year-End Giving

•Give Cash or Check – These are the simplest ways to give. If you give cash in the Sunday offering, put it in an envelope and mark its purpose clearly (General Fund, etc.). A canceled check provides sufficient documentation for most gifts. A Contribution Statement may be provided by the church if you provide adequate data to the church office with your contribution. •Give Appreciated Stock – When you give appreciated stock to the church you can eliminate capital gains tax you would have paid had you sold it. Your gift may be deductible at its full fair market value on the date of delivery and if you have held it more than one year. Contact your broker for details. •Donate an Insurance Policy –The most tax-effective way to donate life insurance is to transfer the policy so the church becomes the owner and beneficiary. You are entitled to an immediate charitable deduction for income tax purposes. If you continue to pay the premiums, each payment is also a deductible charitable donation. •Make a Gift from your IRA (QCD) – If you are 70 ½ years or older, you can transfer (make a Qualified Charitable Distribution) up to $100,000 directly from your IRA financial institution to the church. The transfer reduces your taxable income and benefits you even if you do not itemize deductions. Your broker or investment company can assist you with the correct procedure. •Wills and Trusts – Can’t make a gift today? Consider including a gift to St. Andrew in your will or trust. This allows you to make a future impact without giving up any assets today.

Our highest priority is to focus on sustainability of the church now and in the future. The actions you take now will ensure (with God’s help) that St. Andrew will be here in perpetuity. Please pray about the benefits of year-end giving and consider providing a living legacy to St. Andrew.

Update on our Campfire Victims

As many of you know, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church supported 3 families of the Paradise Campfire. Our church was extremely generous to the victims! Here is what they are doing now:

The Sedano family—Laura, Augustin, Sean (12) and Emilio (3) are in the process of purchasing a new home! We initially bought them beds and gave them gift cards, clothes and cash. The Sedanos felt free in asking us for help when they needed food and cash. A member of our church even gave Augustin art supplies! Things turned around as soon as Augustin found a job working for FedEx as a driver. They live in Chico.

Brandy Harmon—we gave Brandy clothes, gift cards and cash. Brandy has struggled with taking care of her daughter who had open heart surgery in last April. She continues to work and live in Chico.

The Roehling Family moved to a new place in Chico in July. Janet, an aunt, has taken over watching the family. Patrick (18) is finishing his senior year in high school. We were able to get Patrick a computer, and gift cards and cash for the family. Landon (21) is enrolled in a special needs program for young adults. Will, the dad, has continued working in Chico. In our last contact with the Roehling family they received a big table and chairs for their living area from members of our church.

Thank you all for your generosity!
