Dear Friends of Jewish Family Service of Tidewater,We hope this Annual Report fi nds you all healthy and safe. It is with gratitude

that we publish our Report for the 2019-2020 fi scal year, which ended June 30, 2020. As with so many other agencies and services, JFS was hit hard by the sec-ondary effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The primary effects of the virus have impacted so many lives and the health of so many people near and dear. We offer our heartfelt condolences to those of you that may have been impacted by loss during this pandemic.

The secondary effects of the pandemic impacted the agency in several ways. We have been limited in our abil-ity to have face-to-face interaction with many of the peo-ple who count on our services for support. However, the agency has adapted and been resourceful in making sure that the health and safety of those who turn to JFS, and our staff, have been maintained. We continue to provide Meals on Wheels, food and fi nancial assistance, guardianship services, counseling and adoption home studies, as well as private duty home care services.

During the height of the initial outbreak, JFS’ programs, especially in home health, were signifi cantly impacted. One direct result of these impacts was the decision by the Board of Directors to close the Skilled Home Health program. There were many factors that infl uenced this decision — primarily the need to focus on the mission-based programs and services that are the core of Jewish Family Service, especially during moments of greatest need.

We are so grateful for the generosity of the community who heard our pleas for fi nancial assistance, protective equipment and volunteers. Our community has come together to support the most vulnerable among us. This speaks volumes about the generosity and compassion that the Tidewater Jewish community has for others, and it has ripple effects on helping us all to heal and grow from these diffi cult times.

JFS’ focus for the future is in expanding the supports and services we provide in our Clinical Counseling programs and in our private duty Embrace Home Care program. Mental health crises are at an all-time high; the isolation, grief, fear and loss people have endured during this pandemic make the need to focus on expanding these services even more important now. Our Embrace Home Care program helps people remain in their homes, avoiding congregant care settings such as nursing homes where the virus has been especially devastating. Each of these models presents challenges in the age of COVID, but with the support of the community, we are well prepared for overcoming these obstacles.
