  • A Look Back & A Look ForwardWhat a year it’s been! Like all years of growth, 2019 has been full of changes, challenges, and blessings. This year, as we celebrate 110 trips around the sun and face the challenges of 2020, we’ve been (re)studying the mission we’ve built our whole model of service upon:

WE PROVIDE SERVICE TO THOSE IN NEED.

We are called by the gospel to be the hands and feet of God. We have had years where the breadth of our services was wider, and more people may have been counted among those served. But we have had years, like 2019, where the depth of our services was such that we could reach the nish line permanently with those we help - those walking out of the darkness and into the light of freedom from poverty.

WE ADVOCATE FOR COMPASSION AND JUSTICE IN THE STRUCTURES OF SOCIETY.

We are rooted in Catholic Social Teaching and believe in the dignity of every human being. We work with people whose hardships go beyond our wildest fears. Our faith calls us to magnify their voices. There has rarely been a time more urgent than now to spread the message and move the needle to change our communities.

WE CALL ALL PEOPLE OF GOODWILL TO DO THE SAME.

We represent 300+ advocates strong with our employees, and thousands more with the networks you have brought our way. With that comes great responsibility. We are instructed by God to rally the troops, do the hard work, care for the most vulnerable, and challenge those we love to commit to the collective impact. That’s why you’re here.

  • Our mission hasn’t wavered. We look forward to the next 110 years of evolving and adjusting to the changing landscape ahead. So as we celebrate our time on earth

and our legacy, we invite you to be renewed in your engagement with Catholic Charities Fort Worth, a place where miracles happen every day. Just turn the page to

hear about a few of the things that made 2019 a year to remember.

  • "Catholic Charities changed my attitude and helped me believe I would be successful.- Bryan, Rural Vocation Graduate

My name is Bryan Castorena, I am 21 years old and I recently completed my Advanced Welding Certicate at Vernon College Wichita Falls at the Skills Training Center. But in August of 2018, going to college wasn't really a thought for me. Back at home my mother and oldest brother were barely getting by. My father is incarcerated and our household depended on him as the main source of income. My oldest brother and I had to pick up where my dad had left off.

As August got closer, I didn't think I could go back to school. But my community pulled together and paid for my rst semester of school. I knew once I nished that rst semester, things were going to get tough again because I could not afford to continue. Thankfully, I found Catholic Charities.

From there on, there was pretty much a red carpet laid out for my schooling. All the money struggles were out of the way. Catholic Charities changed my attitude and helped me believe I would be successful. It's been a roller coaster trying to get through school but I'm here now standing on two feet, chest out, head high, smiling, and saying proudly, "Look mom, I DID IT!!"

    Bryan's Story

  • "CCFW empowers you and teaches you to pull out those things that were always embedded in you and apply them to life...I was living on the edge of life. Now I have stability. My kids can smile. My kids can see a strong mother."

Kashae came to CCFW struggling as a single mom - working two jobs, living with her parents, and completely overwhelmed by her nances. With the tools and support provided by our Padua program, she took control of her nances, moved into the career she wanted, and moved herself and her kids into a place of their own.

Today, Kashae works as a teacher and coach. Because of her experience with CCFW, she started a mentorship program at her school and uses the tools she learned in Padua to help others. Kashae was empowered to reach her bigger, brighter future and now she empowers others.

Watch Kashae share about her experience below.

  • "In every sense of the word, they're there."

Marcia came to CCFW after nding herself

struggling nancially due to a job loss. Despite

searching for employment, Marcia had been

    without income for eight months.

Through working with her Padua Navigation Team,

Marcia gained employment, paid down debt, and

built savings. But it was more than nancial for

Marcia. Watch as she shares her story and what

    Padua has meant to her.

rate, resulting in 82 students graduating.

More than 200 families left poverty behind for good through our services. That’s 200 families who earn living wages, have no inappropriate debt, have demonstrated savings behaviors and have established a savings

account, and are free of government assistance.

The Gabriel Project served 397 new or soon-to-be moms and enrolled

    136 new clients.

VITA reached a milestone of 250 volunteer hours providing low-income individuals tax-return

guided ve out of poverty, and helped 22 reach a living wage.

The Northwest Campus engaged 56 clients in out-of-poverty

    solutions through Community Connections.

  • Our Employer-Based Services (EBS) partners with businesses to provide their employees on-site services that help to remove barriers that affect work performance and set them on the path to nancial freedom and increased productivity.

    Making Work Work

In 2019, we provided these services at 10 locations. The results speak for themselves! At one of our sites, clients in the program:

Have paid down an average $1,265 in negative debt (or an

average 30% decrease in their negative debt)

Have used budgeting to decrease their monthly expenses by an

    average of $416.

"This program has helped me pay off one credit card bill already and I am working on paying another credit card off. This program has also helped me to work on my savings. I am now saving something each pay period!"

"It could not be easier to arrange time to meet with my Navigator. My needs are denitely being met with this program. I appreciate the fact that we have this program available to us."

  • Leadership & Legacy

    WHAT HAPPENED:

Governor Abbott signed House Bill 1483 into law. The bill, known informally as ‘Making Work Pay’, was heavily advocated for by CCFW because of its potential impact on people in poverty across Texas.

    WHY IT MATTERS:

The new law authorizes a pilot program to test whether a slow reduction of public benets, paired with comprehensive case management, will move people out of poverty more effectively than the current system.

    GOING FORWARD:

CCFW is working closely with HHSC, Representative James Frank (who sponsored the bill) and USDA’s Food and Nutrition Services to ensure Texas is able to fully execute this pilot.

    WHAT HAPPENED:

We sponsored a delegation from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), including Clarence Carter, Director of the Ofce of Family Assistance for HHS’ Administration for Children and Families, for a half-day site visit to share an overview of CCFW as a whole and the latest randomized controlled trial results of the Padua Pilot.

    WHY IT MATTERS:

HHS oversees multiple public assistance programs and this was an unparalleled opportunity to present them with an alternative solution to ending poverty.

    GOING FORWARD:

It was clear from the spirited discussion and lively debate, that this visit is just the beginning of a long-term, meaningful partnership.

    WHAT HAPPENED:

CCFW was invited to present a brieng on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

    WHY IT MATTERS:

The brieng was attended by legislative staff from across the country and showcased CCFW’s move from transactional to transformational case management, highlighting our signature programs, Padua and Stay the Course.

    GOING FORWARD:

This brieng, done in partnership with CCUSA, further positioned CCFW as national thought leaders in the poverty-ending sphere.
