It is a vehicle equipped with a Fuel Cell that generates electricity through the

chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to power the motor driving the

vehicle. Hydrogen, which replaces gasoline as fuel, is an environment-friendly energy

source that can be produced from various raw materials.

Toyota has also made use of hybrid vehicle core technology in the development of this

    vehicle.

From the early stages of their effort to make Sustainable Mobility a reality, in 2002

Toyota began the worlds first limited sale in Japan and the US of the Toyota FCHV as

an ideal vehicle. Toyota has made concrete achievements in Fuel Cell Vehicle

    development.

Successful startup: -30 Celsius Extended cruising range: 830km (JC08 mode) without

    refueling

The Toyota FCHV-adv, which, in 2008, was made available in a limited sale to

selected users, increased the driving range for each hydrogen refill from the previous

330km* to 830km*. Additionally, engine startups and running at minus 30C was

made possible for driving in frigid climates, achieving virtually trouble-free operation.

*10-15 mode (Based on internal investigation)

The vehicle's exterior design evokes two key characteristics of a fuel cell vehicle: the transformation

of air into water as the system produces electricity, and the powerful acceleration enabled by the

electric drive motor. The bold front view features pronounced air intakes, while the sleek side view

conveys the air-to-water transformation with its flowing-liquid door profile and wave-motif fuel cap.

The theme carries to the rear view, which conveys a catamaran's stern and the flow of water

    behind.

Because of the high energy density of hydrogen, even if the tank capacity of an FCV is increased to

ensure travel distance, the cost does not greatly increase as it would with an EV. Though both are

zero-emissions vehicles, over longer travel distances, the merits of an FCV become larger.

We also strive to provide the product at a price that will be acceptable to our customers.

As for hydrogen use, Toyota Group as a whole is advancing technological developments, not only

for the fuel cell vehicle. One example is the fuel cell bus where Hino Motors is making rapid

progress toward market introduction targeted for 2016. Another is the household fuel cell

application delivering a worlds top level electricity generation efficiency of 46.5% developed by

Aisin Seiki and being sold since April on 2012. At Toyota Industries Corporation, continued

development of a fuel cell powered forklift is underway with actual product tests being conducted

since December of 2012 at the Toyoda Gosei factory at Kita-Kyushu.
