A BUSY MONTH
The calendar may deny it but the school buses clogging the roads in the mornings and afternoons
affirm that summer is over. After the lazy days of summer life seems to take on a more serious tone.
Parish life also picks up. Our school has been back in session for two weeks, the eight-week Confirma-
tion course began on Thursday, and next week the Catholic Youth Faith Formation classes will begin.
The Children’s Liturgy at the 10 a.m. Mass is being offered again after a summer off and CYO basketball,
volleyball and cheerleading are already at it. Formation will also begin for those adults who want to be-
come Catholic or are baptized Catholic but have not been confirmed and/or have not received First Com-
munion.
There are a number of special events this month that I would like to draw your attention to. The first
one is the Liturgical Renewal Mini-retreat which will take place next Saturday, beginning with Mass
for the Feast of the Holy Cross at 9 a.m. and end by 11 a.m. It is hoped that all of our liturgical minis-
ters except the altar servers will be able to attend – our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lec-
tors, Sacristans, Ushers, Greeters, Welcome Committee members and everyone involved in the Music
Ministry. (The altar servers will have their own mini-retreat at a later time.) The celebration of the holy
Liturgy is the most important thing we do as a parish, and since we do it for God, we want to do it as best
we can. In the Mass we will ask for God’s blessings on all our liturgical ministers, and after a little re-
freshment I will give a short presentation on the central tenets of the General Instruction of the Roman
Missal, which is the book of the Mass, and the reasons for their implementation. Then each of the minis-
tries will meet separately to discuss any issues that pertain to their particular service.
The first presentation of our ABVM Speaker Series will take place on Tuesday, September 17 at
7 p.m. in the Parish Life Center. This series hopes to provide important teaching and information regard-
ing various topics of interest for parishioners and other interested persons by bringing in experts. We
hope to have a different presenter every other month or so. It is a great opportunity to invite those you
know who might be interested in the subject, even if they don’t go to Mass. It is an easy, no-pressure
way for you to reach out to relatives, friends and neighbors. The speaker on the 17th will be Monsignor
Michael Magee of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, whose topic will be, “Abuse Scandals in the
Church: An Evaluation of Pope Benedict XVI’s Essay on its Causes. What went wrong?” The
more you know about the root causes the easier it will be to talk about it with those who bring it up to
you. It may also help you process your own feelings about this disturbing subject.
Our parish will hold a fun event for the whole family on Sunday, September 15 following the 12
p.m. Mass. This will be our Second Annual Parish Picnic, and everyone is invited! There will be good
food, good fellowship, and games for both kids and adults. We made sure to schedule the picnic so as
not to tempt anyone to miss it for the EAGLES game, as kickoff will be at 8:20 p.m. Enjoy the picnic and
then go home and watch those EAGLES fly against the Falcons!
To close out the month we will celebrate a Parish Mission led by Augustinian Father Michael Sullivan. Father Sullivan will preach at all the Masses on the weekend of September 28th & 29th and hold a service at 7 p.m. each evening from Sunday to Wednesday. I can assure you from per-sonal experience that you will not want to miss what Father has to say. He brings to the congregation a powerful message in a humorous way that helps people to open up to the Holy Spirit. Your children and any guests you bring will not be bored! Your invitation to someone who has stopped coming to Mass may be just what is needed to restore their hope for healing, love, forgiveness and personal renewal.

Live the Liturgy It's said that upon reading the Gospels, Gandhi commented that he very much liked Jesus Christ. It was Christ's followers he found troublesome. One wonders who Gandhi had met and if these Christians had truly counted the cost of their faith. Really following Jesus, is much more challenging than we may think. He emphasizes this with strong language in this Sunday's Gospel. He compares discipleship to the carrying of "his own cross" - and for the need even to "hate" what could disrupt one's commitment. Some of this is standard hyperbole, exaggeration for effect common to the time period. Some of this should make us wonder how deep our discipleship goes. "Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost?" Jesus imagines this construction project gone wrong. Someone may lay the foundation but not have enough resources to finish. We've received the firm foundation of the sacraments - our baptism, for one, along with weekly Mass attendance and regular confession. Yet how often do we find ourselves too distracted, exhausted, or uninterested to truly build our lives on our faith? We have all met such Christians. Some days, we may be those Christians ourselves. We become the incomplete tower that confuses and baffles the onlookers. "This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish!" For some of us, our cross may feel heavier than we expected upon the first lift. Building a tower means laying stone upon stone. It's a process. We don't arrive at completion overnight. Grace is always sufficient to provide the resources, but we need to keep saying yes to the task. This week, consider your own discipleship. What is one area where you've become distracted or discouraged? How can that improve this week? Let God lay another brick on the tower.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) From Deacon Ron Lewis….Hello! I hope you stayed cool over the summer! It would seem that this summer, the Lord did indeed set the earth on fire! As the summer comes to an end, I would like to remind you that the RCIA program will begin on September 25th. With that in mind, on Wednesday, September 18th there will be a "MEET & GREET" in the Parish Life Center/Church lower level for all those interested in entering the RCIA program. At the meeting which will begin at 7 PM, we will discuss the program and distribute the schedule for in-struction. Let us be the straw with which the Lord sets the world on fire!
Through September 1 the 2019 Annu-al Parish Appeal is doing well. Our goal is $150,000. In the first forty-three weeks of the 2019 Appeal two hundred and ninety-nine (299) fami-lies have committed more than $145,300 of which $133,947 has been received. The Appeal will support continuing operations of the Parish and will enable us to fund one neces-sary project. This project is to estab-lish an emergency fund for unbudget-ed, major expenses for the church; e.g., the ultimate replacement of the church roof. The initial contribution to this emergency fund will be one-third of the moneys collected in the 2019 Parish Appeal. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Father Scott and place it in the envelope in the collection basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office. You may also use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make your donation. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity.

The income estimated for our 2019-2020 fiscal year budget has been adjusted to reflect recent historical income numbers. This fiscal year our income goal is $722,000 for the Offer-tory collection. Our beloved church with the associated facilities is ap-proaching 18 years old. As in your home, maintenance costs and operat-ing costs need to be addressed. You have demonstrated your generosity to enable us to fulfill our fiscal re-sponsibilities. Please continue to be as generous as you can.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word resumes
this Sunday, September 8th
at the 10 am Mass
Bring your child to the Children’s Chapel prior to the start of Mass.
During the processional, volunteer teachers lead the children to the St. Cecelia Room and through prayers, the Scripture Readings, and questions that are simplified, the children will come to Know Jesus, Love Jesus, and Serve Jesus. The format follows the Order of the Mass as closely as possible with the purpose of both teaching and preparing children to enjoy and fully participate in Mass. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is recommended for ages 4-8.
Grandparents Day Blessing God of our ancestors, we thank you for our children and our children's children. They are reminders from you about how precious life can be. We humbly ask for wisdom and patience as we take pride and wonder in our grandchildren. Those of us who now pray to you also seek your blessing upon these men and women who are our grandparents or who act in place of grandparents. Bless all the children and their parents and grandparents with your abundant grace. We ask all this through the intercession of Saints Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patron saints of grandparents, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
