As Mayor of Marlborough, I thought that to have an ‘Artist in Residence’ would enhance the image of the town and make people realise what a serious business art is. I’ve always thought that, to paraphrase John F. Kennedy, the person receiving an honour should do more honour to the honour than the honour does to them.

Such an artist is Bryan Hanlon, who has exhibited around the world. I found clear proof of his repute on a recent visit to New Zealand to be part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of their Marlborough. I was carrying his work in a large brown case in a queue at Auckland Airport when the woman next to me asked if it was a painting. When I said it was, she asked me if I’d painted it. When I said I hadn’t, she asked me if it was by anyone famous. ‘Maybe not famous’, I said, ‘but cer tainly noted.’ ‘Oh, the famous wildlife ar tist’, she responded when I uttered the name of Bryan Hanlon. So Bryan’s fame extends just about as far south you can go without needing an icebreaker.

Although he is best known for his paintings of wildlife, he is also noted for his landscapes, his sporting subjects, his portraiture and his sculpture. He works in oils, watercolours, pastel and tempura. Artistic forays have taken him throughout the UK, Europe and America – and Africa, which was the inspiration for his book, Birds and Beasts Africa. He was commissioned by the Jersey Wildlife Trust for a painting depicting endangered species to commemorate its 25th anniversary. Each of his commemorative posters was signed by the founder of the Trust, Gerald Durrell. As a result of a private commission, Bryan designed and painted an altarpiece, a 10ft by 5ft triptych inspired by a verse from St Francis of Assisi.

Now Bryan has presented us with this magnificent exhibition. Truly, he is a worthy artist-in-residence.

INTRODUCTIONBRYAN HANLON

The Mayor of Marlborough, Nick Fogg, in his wisdom decided to create a new post; that of Marlborough Artist in residence. To my surprise he announced that I was to be it. “What does it entail” I asked, “I don’t know” he replied, think about it. I did and realised it afforded me a wonderful opportunity to exhibit once again in Marlborough, but where? What could be better than the Town Hall, an imposing building standing at the eastern end of the High Street, in the most attractive of market towns.

I produced my first bronze sculpture in 1982, a moorhen (included in this exhibition) in a makeshift foundry in a disused piggery on the Marlborough Downs. Since then, on average, I have produced one new piece every two years; not enough.

Painting has always taken the lion’s share of my artistic endeavours. About eighteen months ago circumstances changed which allowed me to devote more time to the three-dimensional side of my work. In that relatively short time I have managed to produce around fifteen pieces; all life size birds, ranging from the diminutive gold crest to the Grey Heron, oh, and a mouse crept in too.

The theme running through the work is man’s interaction and influence on the natural world, in particular, birds.

Over the years, my paintings have explored many avenues, in medium, style and subject matter, constantly searching. For what? Inspiration, satisfaction, who knows? What I have learnt is that if the subject you choose to portray, whether that be in paint or bronze, doesn’t excite, then there’s little point in starting it. That’s not to say if it does excite and you take it on, it will be successful; they seldom are! Like climbing a mountain, the view from the top may not be great, but it’s always hard work getting there.

Although birds remain an important subject and initial source of inspiration, Bryan also explores landscape, portraiture and sporting subjects.
