PLAN YOUR DAYWhen you arrive...If you are driving please make your way to the West Campus Entrance (HU6 7RU). There is plenty of parking available and you do not need to display a parking permit in your vehicle during your visit. Disabled parking is available across the campus, please see the accompanying campus map.

Once you’ve arrived...Follow the signs to the Arrival Point where you can register and find out more details about the day. You can also collect your bag of Open Day goodies.

The Arrival Point is open from 9am–3pm. We try to make your check in as speedy as possible. But to help us out – please complete your Arrival Ticket before you attend and hand it to staff at the Arrival Point.

TOP TIPS FOR YOUR HULL OPEN DAY• Attend the ‘University and Student Life Talk’

– find out everything you need to know about being a student here (see page 9).

• Find out about our degrees – visit the subject stands on the ground floor of the Brynmor Jones Library and speak to academics to find out more information about all of our courses. Or visit one of our specialised subject talks (see pages 15 & 16).

• Explore our lovely campus – join one of our guided walking tours led by a current student. Tours run from the front of the Brynmor Jones Library entrance (see page 10).

• Home Sweet Home – find out what it is like to live as a student in Hull by visiting our wide variety of accommodation (see page 11). Chat to the accommodation staff in the Information Exhibition on the ground floor of the Brynmor Jones Library, attend an Accommodation Talk or chat to one of our current students.

• New to Hull or lived here your whole life? Either way, we thoroughly recommend taking a City Tour with our trained guide to find out more about the city’s history in Hull’s picturesque Old Town and where to eat, drink and shop (see page 18 & 19).

• Money Money Money – find out what bursaries and scholarships you could be entitled to by chatting with our Money Matters staff in the Information Exhibition or attending one of their specialist talks (see page 20).

• Get a birds-eye view of the campus and city – visit the 7th floor observation deck on the top floor of the Brynmor Jones Library where you are guaranteed breath-taking views across the city and a closer look at key landmarks.

• Visit our recently refurbished Students’ Union – open throughout the day, it offers an array of student services. Drop in and check out our award winning nightclub Asylum, browse the shops at our onsite campus market and Waterstones, or relax with a Starbucks and watch the world go by.

This is your chance to explore and discover all the wonderful things the University of Hull has to offer. If you need any additional information or help through the day – don’t hesitate to ask our staff and student ambassadors in red. We are happy to help!

City ToursTour the city with our resident expert and a current student. Tours depart at 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm* from the Hertford car park; *The 3pm tour includes a drop-off at the Hull Paragon Interchange at approximately 3.45pm.

ACCOMMODATION TOURS

The Lawns Student VillageA complimentary shuttle service to, and guided tour of The Lawns departs from the Hertford Car Park every 15 minutes from 9am until 2.45pm. *Visitors are very welcome to make their own way to the Lawns (HU16 5SQ) and join a guided tour. Please note: student rooms are open for viewing until 3.30pm.

The Courtyard From September 2016, we will have a new £30 million accommodation complex right here on campus. Please visit the accommodation team in the Brynmor Jones Library for more information.

Thwaite hallTake the free shuttle service to enjoy a guided tour of our fully-catered Traditional Hall of Residence. Tours depart every 30 minutes between 10am and 2.30pm from the Hertford Car Park. *Please note that parking is not available at Thwaite Hall.

Taylor courtVisit our on-campus accommodation any time during the day (9am–4pm). The Accommodation Office staff will also be available to answer any questions.

MAKING A WEEKEND OF IT?

University of Hull StudentshipThe University of Hull Studentship is a one-off non-repayable award of £1,000 or equivalent benefit package, given in the first year of study to UK and EU students with an annual residual household income of less than £25,000.

University of Hull Merit ScholarshipThe University of Hull Merit Scholarship is a non-repayable award of £2,000, to be paid in two instalments (in October and February) during the first year of study. It is awarded to UK and EU students who have achieved results of BBB at A Level or equivalent.

University of Hull Achievement ScholarshipThe University of Hull Achievement Scholarship is a non-repayable award of £2,000 in the first year and £1,000 each in the second and third years of study. It is awarded to UK and EU students who have achieved results of A*AA at A Level or equivalent.



Gulbenkian Centre Did you know the University had its own Theatre? Drop by the Gulbenkian Centre and see our 250 seater Donald Roy Theatre. Botanical Gardens Thwaite Hall (available to visit by bus tour Page 11) is based on 20 acres of beautiful semi-natural habitat including Grassland, broadleaved woodland, orchard and lake. These areas are used by the departments of both Biology and Geography to run field courses in such subjects as freshwater ecology, biodiversity, and animal behaviour.

An outdoor classroom has recently been erected to facilitate these activities and encourage visitors, and a self-guided tree trail is available to see the range of exotic species on show around the gardens.

Philip Larkin’s OfficeThe University’s Brynmor Jones Library was also the workplace of the poet Philip Larkin who served as its Head Librarian from 1959 – 1985. His office remains on the first floor with original features including his bookcase, flooring and his desk. A pair of his glasses and his typewriter, which was possibly used to produce a number of his most renowned works are also still in situ.

The Library was also the workplace of former poet laureate Andrew Motion.

JRR Tolkien and Trench Fever John Ronald Reuel (JRR) Tolkien is most famous for his works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, which have inspired generations of readers. But, did you know after returning from France with trench fever in 1917, Tolkien spent 18 months in East Yorkshire, including two lengthy stays at the Dennsion Centre, based on Cottingham Road which was then the Brooklands Officers’ Hospital in Hull.

Art Collection The University of Hull Art Collection is a small but outstanding collection specialising in paintings, sculpture, drawings and prints produced in Britain 1890-1940. It includes works by Beardsley, Sickert, Steer, Lucien Pissarro, Augustus John, Stanley Spencer, Wyndham Lewis and Ben Nicholson as well as sculpture by Epstein, Gill, Gaudier-Brzeska and Henry Moore.

Waterstones Bookshop:OPEN 10AM – 4PM Whether it’s the latest bestseller or a core textbook for your course, the Waterstones University of Hull team is dedicated to the world of books. The team can provide details of upcoming events, recommendations and reviews and a list of local authors.

Sports and Fitness Centre:OPEN 9AM – 7PM With helpful, professionally trained staff, the Sports and Fitness Centre’s facilities include a fully equipped fitness suite incorporating the latest in cardiovascular and resistance equipment. You are welcome to tour the facilities – just ask the staff at the centre’s reception desk for further information.

Middleton Hall Studios:OPEN 12:30AM – 2PM Entry via Larkin Building.

Have a look around our state-of-the-art music studio and rehearsal spaces. Our studios are used for producing recordings of all styles of music, including classical, jazz, pop and film soundtracks.



Health campus and medical buildingThe development of a new Health Campus at the University of Hull will bring together the Hull/York Medical School with the Faculty of Health and Social Care and establish a new Institute for Clinical and Applied Health Research. The new Health Campus Building will provide specialised medical teaching facilities including a full mock hospital ward, operating theatre and intensive care nursing facilities. In addition to providing extensive collaborative working areas for researchers, and postgraduate and undergraduate students, the building houses a large lecture theatre with a completely flexible layout, an extensive atrium housing a café on the ground floor, several fully equipped meeting rooms, a think pod and ‘green roofs’ with external terrace areas.

Middleton Hall renovationsA £9.5 million refurbishment of Middleton Hall will see more world class facilities at the University, including a concert hall, surround-sound cinema, an ambisonic sound studio and industry-standard recording and rehearsing facilities. The refurbishment will include a new entrance and café with the 400-plus seater concert hall forming the centre piece of the refurbishment.

A new large-scale accommodation development worth approximately

£30m which will be located on Inglemire Lane, will boast

contemporary architecture along with the latest technology and infrastructure. The new project will provide 560 students with

accommodation within the campus. Features also include en suite

facilities to all rooms and a social/learning centre. The development is driven by the incentive to provide the best possible living experience

for its students.
