A home is a form of personal expression, such as Peggy Bel’s modern f lat, which exudes her pared-down aesthetic, and speaks of her second, full-time job as a mom to two young girls. The family of four lived in Mid-Levels beforehand but when it came time to purchase their own place, Peggy had her heart set on the burgeoning bohemian neighbourhood of Sheung Wan. “We love the area. It’s an eclectic blend of traditional Chinese businesses and hip, new restaurants and shops,” she says. Plus, when she stumbled on a space that had so much potential, it was impossible to pass it up. Peggy could see past the four, pokey, sub-divided units and the dilapidated rooftop, and envisioned a large, light-filled family home. “We knew what to do after our very first visit, and we worked on the plan,” recalls the interior designer.

To accommodate her growing family, she positioned four ample bedrooms to one wing of the apartment, which is cordoned off from the rest of the open-plan communal area. Each bedroom is spacious and has its own balcony – even the girls’

bedrooms, which can be divided into two rooms with a sliding screen – have a shared outdoor balcony where they spend countless hours playing.

Unlike other residential projects, Peggy was able to incorporate all the features she loves into her own home. She incorporated black metal cladding for the walls, doors, stairs and cabinets, as well as milky cement walls. “These dark background features allow for light colours to pop and create more contrast and deepness,” she explains. “I like a neutral palette of colours – especially a grey palette – but I’m always careful to choose warm tones.”

For furnishings, Peggy sourced prized pieces from her favourite designers. A Serge Mouilles light fixture and Charlotte Periand wall lighting illuminate the living room, which also features a striking, indigo-toned India Madhavi ceramic side table and sofas by Paola Navone for Gervasoni and Linteloo. “All her sofas have a special, casual look to them. They’re very welcoming for family and guests,” adds the designer.

As Peggy and her partner are both consummate hosts and avid home chefs, the kitchen was also a prime consideration in their design brief. To make the space more conducive to cooking and socialising, Peggy designed folding doors – an ingenious feature that instantly transforms the counter space into a streamlined bar, and keeps prep stations and a sink full of dirty dishes out of sight.

With large, f loor-to-ceiling windows to one side, Peggy made sure enough light f looded to other parts of the home by installing skylights in the kitchen and dining

Periand壁燈,及Paola Navone for Gervasoni and Linteloo沙發和奪目的靛藍色India Madhavi陶瓷邊

room. Here, even on cloudy days, sunlight shines into the formal dining area, and onto their prized photograph of Mick Jagger by French artist Claude Gassian.

The home’s crown jewel, however, is the enviable outdoor garden dotted with priceless artworks. Comfy couches offer a place to sit back and soak up the sun, while a bar and barbecue make it a cinch to sip cocktails and enjoy meals alfresco. The garden also lets the girls run barefoot on lush, green grass – a rarity in Hong Kong – despite being situated at the heart of the city. “My favorite spot is the terrace,” shares Peggy. “We really feel like we’re on holiday there.” //
