Phylogeny of HPAI/H5Nx Russian isolates (2020) • H5N8 and H5N5 HPAIV isolates

belong to clade 2.3.4.4b of Middle

East origin virus introduced to

Russia in 2020

•A few viruses detected in 2020 are

genetically similar to H5N8 viruses

isolated in 2016-2019 in a number of

regions of the Russian Federation

that indicates a local circulation of

the agent in some regions

HPAI epizootic situation in Russia in 2021

• In 2021 (January - September) HPAI was registered in 7 subjects of Federation (17 cases in total as of 17th September)

• In January-February 2021 two outbreaks (H5N8) were notified in commercial poultry farms (Krasnodar – 0,4 mln layers, Rostov – 0,24 mln turkeys)

• In March HPAI cases were reported in wild birds in Dagestan and Astrakhan (H5N5)

• In May HPAIVs detections were reported in wild birds in Tyva (H5N8)

• In June-July HPAI cases were notified in wild birds and domestic birds in backyards in Tyumen Oblast (H5N1)

• In August –September HPAI (H5N1) outbreaks have been reported in Tyumen Oblast and Chelyabinsk Oblast in wild and domestic birds including open-type farming poultry (17000 geese)

• The situation seriously worsened by October:

- mass wild waterfowl die-off in Crimea (H5N5), predominantly Podiceps nigricollis(Black-necked Grebes);

- HPAI cases are suspected in Saratov, Samara, Orenburg regions, samples have been submitted to ARRIAH for confirmation and following notification to OIE

Conclusions

• HPAIVs H5N8, H5N5, H5N1 of clade 2.3.4.4.b are currently circulating in the Russian Federation

• Further reassortment events are possible

• The scenario of the spread of the disease is the same as last year (2020)

• LPAI H9N2 continues to threaten commercial poultry
