27 September 2020 YOUTH CONNECTION FROM THE PASTOR'S HEART Early this month I attended the 12th Session of the General Conference of the Methodist Church in Singapore. During the conference session, the Rev Dr Gordon Wong was elected Bishop for the next 4 years (2021 - 2024). Rev Wong is currently the President of the Trinity Annual Conference. Before he became the President he was a full-time lecturer at the Trinity Theological College teaching Old Testament Studies. His consecration will be held in December 2020. Two other important issues were raised during the Session. The first was the challenges faced by the Emmanuel Tamil Annual Conference, and they have many. To begin with, they are the smallest Annual Conference with 9 local churches and a combined membership of 800 members. Their churches are mostly Tamil speaking with a goal to equip and empower their members to spread the Gospel, particularly in the neighbourhoods around their churches. The greatest challenge they face now is the lack of leadership succession. Young people leaving for English speaking churches seems to be the norm. This leads to the other major challenge of having very few people respond to become pastors and full-time workers. The situation is so serious that they anticipate an acute shortage of pastors in the immediate 10 years! The second issue raised was an appeal to MCS to offer clearer guidelines on matters pertaining to Same Sex Attraction (SSA). Delegates wanted to know how to respond pastorally in church, and whether people can still serve in the ministry. (If you wish to know more about the Session or issues raised, please approach me personally.) There are no easy answers to these issues, but with on-going discussions and prayer, we are hopeful that we will gain wisdom and clarity and head in the right direction as one Body. Do pray for the new Bishop as he provides leadership. May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with every good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. (HEB 13:20-21) WELCOME TO YC! Youth Connection (YC) and Junior Youth Connection (JYC) are KY's community of students and young adults who love God, and doing life together! BAPTISM ATCHRISTMAS

follow Christ's example (Mk 1:9), obey Christ's commands (Mt 28:19-20) and publicly confess our faith, and commitment to Jesus Christ (Mk 16:16).

Through water baptism, we

It is the next step after salvation through repentance and faith, and is animportant foundation for Christian life. For in doing so, we identify with andembrace the significance of receiving a brand new, blessed life in Christ and anew (spiritual) family. Everyone who has made the decision to believe in Christcan and ought to receive baptism. Plainly speaking, there are no other 'pre-requisites' to fulfil, apart from believing in Christ, before you can make thedecision to be baptised!*

Why Baptism?

What about Confirmation? In Kum Yan Church, we practice Confirmation of Faith for candidates who werebaptised as children or infants. This is not a second Baptism, but as its namesuggests, an act of confirming or re-affirming your faith in Jesus Christ - thistime, done out of your own volition or will, that is, to make a declaration that youhave decided, as an adult (16 years and above), to follow Jesus and bestrengthened by the Holy Spirit to continue your journey as His disciple.

If you would like to receive baptism or confirm your faith this Christmastime, please inform your cell leaders, Kerin or Queenie by 18 October 2020.

Do note that all candidates will need to attend Baptism Class sessions. The datesfor this class will be released at a later date. Depending on the class size, it couldtake place in person or on Zoom.
