Norman George Smith Jr. of Angola, NY entered into rest January 26, 2016 at age 78. Beloved husband of Judy (Groh) Smith; father of Me-lissa O’Day, Timothy Smith and the late Jason Smith; son of the late Phyllis and Norman Smith; brother of the late Alan (Barbara) Smith; survived by 6 grand-children, one great grand-child and nieces and neph-ews. Norman was a member of the First Church of Evans and Penn Dixie Paleontolog-ical & Outdoor Education Center. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb-ruary 6, 2016 at 11 AM in the First Church of Evans, Derby, NY. Arrangements by Addison Funeral Home Inc.

Angelo C. Butera Angelo C. Butera, a wide-ly known detective with the Town of Hamburg Police Department, died Sunday in Buffalo General Medical Center after a long illness. Butera, who grew up in Buf-falo, was a graduate of Fron-tier High School and Erie Community College with a degree in criminal justice. He was 60. He was a longtime secu-rity officer at Buffalo Bills home games and served as a security officer at special events for St. Francis High School. He was named an officer of the year by the Town of Hamburg Police Benevolent Association, the American Legion and the Newton Abbott Fire Com-pany for his police work that began in 1995. Mr. Butera was promoted to detective in August 2001 and proudly pinned the po-lice badge on his son, Chris-topher, when he joined the Hamburg Town Police De-partment in July 2009. Be-fore joining the police force, Mr. Butera had worked for Charletowne Flooring in Tonawanda. An avid hunter and golfer, he was a member of Knights of Columbus Lodge 2220.Beloved husband of Sally (nee Mayer); loving and devoted father of Nicho-las (Valerie), Christopher, Richard Butera, and Kim-berly (Paul) Stack; son of the late Angelo and Carmel-la Butera; dearest brother of Leo (Kathy) and Anthony (Mary) Butera; also sur-vived by many nieces and nephews. Arrangements by the Lakeside Memorial Fu-neral Home, Inc. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pancreatic Can-cer Network. Southtowns Catholic School Competes in Future City

SCS Students in Grade 7 have worked very hard all year to build a "Future City". They worked as a team with Mr. Tim West as they planned their city using SimCity™ soft-ware. They had to research and write a solution to an en-gineering problem; build a tabletop scale model with re-cycled materials and present their ideas before judges at the Regional Competitions that were held at Mount Saint Mary's on January 23. J.T. Waugh Students Selected to Participate in National Football

League’s Play 60 Challenge Students in Mr. Renzo’s class at John T. Waugh Elemen-tary recently participated in the National Football League’s Play 60 Challenge. This program was created nearly ten years ago when the American Heart Association and the National Football League teamed up to create a four-week program that inspires kids to get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day in school and at home. This program promotes 60 minutes of exercise per day for every child and is supported locally by the Buffalo Bills, Independent Health, and the American Heart Association. Students are challenged to record their activities and time spent exercising. Building Principal, Mrs. Paula Eastman, enrolled all classrooms at J.T. Waugh Elementary in the program and encouraged students to participate. To join the Play 60 Challenge, students exercised and re-corded their activities in a journal to reflect what they were doing and for how long. Second Grade Teacher, Mr. John Renzo, then submitted the records of his class to the Play 60 website and the Buffalo Bills selected 12 classes from across WNY to participate in a fun-filled activity day at the AdPro Sports Fieldhouse in December. Mr. Renzo’s class was very fortunate to be one of the 12 classes selected. The students in Mr. Renzo’s class were able to meet some current Buffalo Bills players and participated in six activity stations. The students did everything from kicking field goals, to catching passes, to running the ball and div-ing for touchdowns. The students enjoyed the experience and learned some new exercises to help keep them healthy.

Fellow Residents, I would like to thank everyone for their valuable input and recommenda-tions regarding the proposed purchase of the Lotus Abode Beach property. This opportunity has generated a great deal of healthy conversation about the direction of our community. I would like to take a minute of your time to explain and review this opportunity as I under-stand it. The town was approached by the land owner for the potential purchase of this property; the board was not actively searching for property with lake access to purchase. The negotiation was based on what the board believed to be a fair price for 47 acres which in-cluded a sandy beach. The options of finance were discussed internally and publicly in great detail and with great concern to the financial stability of our budget. The option that seems to fit our budget is a long term serial bond, approximately 20 years; this will also give the town the ability to renegotiate terms though out the life of the loan. We have also included funds to engage an engineering firm to develop a site and business plan for the property in controlled affordable phases. The suggestion has been purposed to establish a steering committee of residents which would represent the affected communities to work with the engineering firm. This process should be professional and transparent.

What I do not know, is what will happen to this property if the town decides not to purchase it? Nobody can predict the future. The open access to beach property is becoming rare and this will most likely be the last chance for the residents of Town of Brant to own a parcel. I would encourage residents to inquire about an opportunity to view the property in person prior to the referendum vote on February 8th. There are also photographs of the parcel avail-able. This is an opportunity to provide a park including a beach for the future generations of Brant residents.

On February 8, 2016 As your Town Supervisor these past 10 years, I assure you that your taxes will not go up because of the purchase of this pristine park land. You have trusted my judgment these past 10 years, and we have a new Town Hall and have greatly improved our town assets to over 2 million dollars, and your taxes have gone down for 9 straight years. For one of the rare times since I have been supervisor, the entire board is in full support of this purchase. Let me now share the facts with you to dispel some of the untruths. In last week’s Pennysaver, it was stated by a non-resident that the Town Board ignored a public survey that was overwhelmingly opposed to the purchase - this is totally untrue. The count was actually about 55-45% and all the surveys were not included. Also, the board could have legally purchased the property in 5 years at 1 to 2% with-out ever going to a vote, but we felt it was the right thing to do so that the residents would have a say and be a part of such a historical event as acquiring a Town Beach for our children, grandchildren and future generations to enjoy. The Town of Brant is the only lake front community that does not have a public beach that we can allow our residents free access to. It was also stated that I did not understand how Municipal Bonds were administered, and it would cost another $200,000. Obviously the former NY State Attorney Gen-eral does not have all of the facts, such as this amount would be stretched over 20 years and the cost to the taxpayers less than $7 dollars per year. As the Fiscal Officer of the Town, I have the best interest of the Town at stake, and I did check on our Liability Insurance and was told that it would be covered under our existing policies. As far as the upkeep, I have been told by many that they would volunteer as friends for the park group that would be available to clean the debris on the beach and keep our park pristine. It has also been noted that money to build shelters will be donated. I do not understand how a non-resident of the town would try to sway the town residents from improving our community and labeling the residents of Brant as insane. He doesn’t even live here, and we have not seen him in our town at any functions during my 10 years as Supervisor. I write this because I am protecting the SANITY of our community as so stated and don’t need outsiders to interfere with such a historical event as this. Like I stated in my last ad, the cost to the taxpayers will be taken out of the taxes you already pay, and there will not be an increase. The town has 1478 taxable proper-ties, and the cost of $650,000 over 20 years would cost the taxpayer $21.99 per year, and with the added interest of $7 it would cost you less than $29 per YEAR and be absorbed in your annual taxes and not influence any increase. Also, did you know that there are various grants available once the town owns the property because the State and Federal Governments are trying to protect lands such as this? The state’s local waterfront revitalization program told me that there would be up to $150,000 in grants to help with the development of our Nature Preserve. The WNY Land Conservancy also supports this purchase and would help in any way possible to keep our park pristine and save the environment for future generations to enjoy. I then ask you: If it is not the increase in taxes that would make you opposed to this purchase, then what is it that would make you vote against your town from becoming a better place to live?

The Town Board has not fully disclosed the true cost of the purchase, and beyond that, the board has failed to describe the ADDITIONAL COSTS TO TAXPAYERS for MAINTENANCE, INSURANCE, SECURITY AND SITE DEVELOPMENT.

2. Supervisor Pero, in a paid political ad, projected the purchase price to cost no more than a steak dinner if spread out over all tax parcels in the town, This seems like a weak justification to many taxpayers who are on FIXED INCOMES, ARE ELDERLY OR ARE ALREADY HAVING TROUBLE PAYING THEIR PROPERTY TAXES, considerations that Mr. Pero’s steak dinner analogy ignores.

3. The Town of Brant should not be in the land acquisition business, thereby removing property from the tax rolls. If the current owner wants to preserve the natural state of the property, she should keep it and maintain it herself.

4. The board HAS FAILED TO EXPLAIN HOW NON-RESIDENTS OF THE TOWN WILL BE EXCLUDED FROM THE PROPERTY. If Evangola is too expensive for town residents (one justification cited by the board for buying a beach), why is it any more affordable for people from other towns? To make the beach available only to town residents, A COSTLY SECURITY SYSTEM will be needed. Additionally, INSURANCE LIABILITY COSTS WILL ALSO SKYROCKET.

5. How was the purchase price negotiated? What restrictions has the town agreed to as part of the sales contract? Will anyone receive a broker’s commission? Who is funding the political ads placed in the Pennysaver by Mr. Pero?
