Mr Sewill is working with the Eco Club on a project to save energy by switching off lights. During assembly today pupils gave

a small presentation. They introduced a competition to produce signs, which can be placed next to a light switch to remind

the children to switch off the lights.

Mr Sewill asked pupils to make a sign. The Eco club will choose the best signs to be laminated and placed around the school.

There are approximately one hundred light switches around the school so Mr Sewill is hoping to select many of signs.

    Date: 1 April – 8 April 2017

    Cost: £1100

Please see the information at the end of this newsletter. You have been sent an email

with the full description and application form for the trip.

Please find below a letter from Mr Sewill with

    information about this trip.

We have extended the deadline to

Monday 1 February. Anyone interested must have

the reply slip back in school on Monday morning please.

J4 Sailing Trip with the Ocean Youth Trust — July 2016

The Royal Shakespeare Company is performing their interpretation of Midsummer Night’s Dream from 12 –16 April.

The closest venue to us is Bradford, which is not too far and should be well worth the visit.

Unfortunately, we cannot offer this as a school trip due to other commitments in school that week (we come back on

13 April). It would be great for your children to see a live version of the play, especially one they have just finished

    studying. Highly recommended. Julia Jones

We are looking forward to our joint concert with Clifton and St Peter’s on

Thursday 11 February which will involve our String Orchestra, Jazz Band and Chapel

Choir. Parents will have received an email from Mrs Appleby, Music Secretary at St Peter’s,

regarding ticket allocation for this event. Owing to the large number of pupils involved,

tickets are initially restricted to two per family. All general queries concerning this event

should be directed to [email protected].

It is important that the reply slip, attached to our email about tea arrangements, is returned

as soon as possible to St Olave’s for the attention of Mrs Herd [email protected].

It is hoped that with the later start time, as many pupils as possible will go home for tea and

return to St Peter’s at 6.30 pm for a 7.00pm start.

    Informal Concert

We enjoyed a lovely concert on Wednesday 20 January and were treated to a real variety

of performances across a wide range of instruments. Our next informal concert is on

    Wednesday 2 March.

Yorkshire Youth Choir is currently auditioning for new members. Please read the information below.

After baking and selling cakes, helping with chores at home and saving

pocket money, Ainsty House pupils raised a total of £150 towards the

Toilet Twinning Charity Appeal. Pupils have yet to choose the location of

    their “twins”.

Thank you to everyone who supported this.

We have reminded the children this morning in assembly, about the need to keep safe when travelling to and from school.

This includes walking through the car parks and across roads – especially as it is still quite dark before and after school.

Pupils were also reminded that they should be travelling to and from school wearing the correct school uniform.

Pupils should only wear the official dark blue school coat (which is optional on the uniform list) or the sports jacket when

travelling to and from school. Only in exceptional circumstances, like for safety reasons when cycling in the dark, and where

permission has been given from the Deputy Head, should pupils be allowed to wear alternative coats.

Scarves, hats and gloves should also be plain navy.

    20th January 2015

    Dear Parents

All the J4s were given an invigorating talk today by the Ocean Youth Trust (OYT), about a sailing voyage that

they will be running for us from 18-23 July aboard the training vessel ‘James Cook’. OYT have been running

sailing trips for St Olave’s for a number of years now. This year we will be setting sail from, and returning to

Whitehaven Marina in West Cumbria. The voyage is open to all J4 pupils but there are only twelve berths

    available.

The voyage lasts for 6 days and will give pupils the opportunity to explore the Irish Sea. Depending on the

direction of the wind, the James Cook may sail to the Isle of Man, Ireland, Scotland or Wales. Pupils will be part

of the crew, and their tasks will include manning the galley, washing the decks, hoisting and lowering the sails,

navigating, and helming. No previous experience is required, just some enthusiasm, and sea legs. There will be

the opportunity to gain a RYA qualification if your child would like to, but there is no pressure to do so. Most

importantly we will have lots of fun and lasting memories of an amazing adventure on the waves.

The boat is skippered by a professional Skipper, Grace Metcalfe, accompanied by a qualified First Mate and

Bosun. There will be six adult sea staff in total, who have all had plenty of experience helping young children

enjoy sailing. If you would like to find out more, please visit the website www.sailjamescook.com, and have a

look at the photos of last year’s trip on the notice board next to the Sports fixture board.

The cost of the trip is £650, which includes all specialist clothing such as waterproofs, life jackets, food, insurance

and all activities while away. The children will also be given a hoodie to wear on the trip and to take home to

remind them of their adventures. There will be no transport provided so parents will be responsible for

dropping off and collecting their children from the boat at midday. On previous voyages, parents have enjoyed

having this opportunity to see the boat and meet the staff. Once the crew list is finalised I will ensure that you

have a copy so that you can sort out car shares if required.

If your child would like a place on the crew, please fill in the form by Friday 29th January and return it to me.

If the trip is oversubscribed, places will be offered to the first twelve names drawn from a hat. Crew members

and their parents will be sent more details and invited to an information evening later on in the term, when staff

from the OYT will be available to answer questions. In the mean time, if I can help, please come and see me, or

    email me at [email protected].

I am looking forward to accompanying the St Olave’s 2016 crew on this adventure of a lifetime.

Ocean Youth Trust North is a charity specialising in the personal development of young people and adults

through ocean sailing. It is an activity that inspires self-confidence and the acceptance of personal responsibility,

promotes an acceptance of others, and develops a willingness to take controlled risks.

    James Cook is a 21 metre (70 foot), 54 tonne steel-hulled ketch.

She was designed to be sailed by young people, many of whom

come from non-sailing backgrounds but can be fully involved in

sailing the boat. Sail training requires participants to confront many

demanding challenges, both physical and emotional.

At the stern is the cockpit. There is lots of room for crew to sit

together, either on look out, or simply taking in the amazing views

and fresh sea air. The steering wheel is also in the cockpit – all

crew members take turns to steer the boat. Below deck is the

saloon and sleeping quarters. The saloon has plenty of seating and a

table big enough for everyone. Time spent below deck can be as

much fun as the sailing experience. It’s where the whole team can

have briefings together, chat about plans for the voyage, cook and

eat together. On James Cook we ensure that everyone feels like a

valued member of the team and above all have fun! Crew sleep

below deck in an area at the front of the boat which contains 12

bunks. Our sea staff have cabins in the middle and the rear of the

    boat.

We believe that the ‘Challenge of the Sea’ can help people to learn teamwork and mutual trust. We make them

take responsibility for their own actions and decisions, and encourage them to develop a sense of equality and

fairness, with an understanding of the different needs and backgrounds of others. The young people will learn a

range of seamanship skills and acquire an awareness of the environment. Most of all they will have had fun. This

    is our mission.

    The Yorkshire Youth Choir

The Yorkshire Youth Choir was formed in 2002 with the help of a substantial grant from Youth Music.

The choir experiences a varied programme of singing tuition from Artistic Directors John and Alison Pryce-Jones, and guest experts in differing genres. The YYC has a junior choir as well as the senior choir. The YYC performs as the full choir in the concerts and as senior or junior choir, upper voices, senior girls and male voice. Successful auditionees are placed in the most appropriate section.

The choir has over 130 members, aged 10-21 years, who meet twice a year at residential courses within the region, often at Queen Ethelburga’s School between York and Harrogate, and occasionally for a singing workshop or concert during the year. YYC members are expected to attend at least one residential course per year although we would prefer you to attend both. The cost of a residential course is £306 which includes all accommodation, meals, tutorials and workshops. A limited number of part bursaries are available subject to circumstances and an application form can be obtained from the NOEL office. In addition a 10% discount is applied for siblings.

Each course concludes with a concert. Past venues include York Minster, Selby Abbey, Beverley Minster, Halifax Minster, Huddersfield Town Hall and the Jack Lyons Concert Hall in York.

Auditions are held twice a year in February and May and are open to any singers living or studying in Yorkshire aged 10-21 years; we look for singers with potential and enthusiasm as much as experience! Anyone who applies for the YYC will have paid a small fee of £25 towards their audition; if successful, this fee covers your first year’s subscription to the choir. Following their first year with the choir, YYC membership costs £10 per member per year.

Choir members not only develop music skills, but also develop socially and many make potentially life-long

friendships throughout Yorkshire based around music.

For further details about the choir, auditions and downloadable forms visit our website: www.northernorchestralenterprises.co.uk
