The Richmond Town Hall is at the top of the list of public buildings that will be strengthened to meet national earthquake standards after the Tasman District Coun-cil agreed to spend $442,000 on earth-quake-proofing five of its buildings around the district. The council allocated $500,000 towards the seismic upgrading of its community build-ings in its 2014-2015 draft annual plan and

last week its Community Development committee decided where that funding would be spent. The Richmond Town Hall was designated as a top priority based on a number of criteria including usage, cost of the repairs, historic significance and prox-imity of other similar buildings. The Richmond Town Hall is one of five buildings that will be upgraded to meet the national standard of 34 per cent of the

new building standard. The council agreed to spend $83,400 on the Richmond Town Hall as well as $93,600 on the Motueka Memorial Hall, $35,000 on the Bainham Hall, $180,000 on the Riwaka Hall and

$50,000 on the Motueka Museum. The Richmond Town Hall has a seismic rating of less than 30 per cent and will need some internal re-fitting to meet the required standard. Sport Tasman staff, who use the building, will have to be relocated while the upgrade is completed.

We made the Richmond Town Hall a priority on its significant use, committee chair Judene Edgar says. Its also only a relatively small amount of work thats needed to bring it up to standard. The Wakefield Hall missed out on funding with council deciding to reconsider the hall at a later date along with other buildings. A report to council stated that a new Wakefield or Brightwater com-munity facility is proposed in the long term plan although Judene says that is looking less likely because council is determined to reduce debt - strengthening the Wakefield Hall is estimated to cost $93,600.Judene says the Brightwater Hall, Hope Hall, Spring Grove Hall and Murchison Service Centre and Library are all regarded as lower earthquake risks, based on their age and construction, and will have seismic assessments in the next few months. The Mapua Wharf Building and Armadillos, which are owned by council, met the required standards.

The opening of the Tapawera Gateway last Saturday marked the end of an eight year long dream for Tapawera resident, and chairman of the Tapawera Promotions Association, Dun-can Wilson. Brian Flintoff designed the carved gateway which repre-sents unity and includes the Maori and European history of the region with Kahurangi explorer, Thomas Brunner, on one side and his lifelong friend and Maori guide, E Kehu, on the other side of the gateway. It is located in the community centre gardens, village centre and it is hoped that it will at-tract more tourists to the area with only a 10 kilometre drive to the Wangapeka track in the Kahurangi National Park. Duncan and secretary of the

association, Colin Ball, first put a gateway proposal to the Tasman District Council in May 2009. The project was then developed further with other locals including Tapaw-era School principal, Kelvin Woodley, Richard Davis, Kate Radloff, Maurice Taylor and Sharon Rogers, joining the committee to help drive the project. We were aware that thousands of people travel through Tapawera each year and we wanted to have some-thing, a focal point, to let the people know about the sights and sounds of Tapawera, says Duncan.Carved by master carver, Mark

Davis from Nelson, the gate-way also features the Wanga-peka track and river plus carvings depicting the gold prospecting, timber and food-growing history of the area. A kaitiaki, Maori guardian rock, has been placed in the middle of the gateway to symbolise Mt Arthur looking over the Ka-hurangi.It also features native gardens, native timber seating areas and information on local history. Stage three of the project, still in progress, includes a com-munity centre which will be a hub to promote local arts and crafts and tourism operators. We want the gateway to be the beginning of growing Tapaw-era tourism and help locals to have a better understanding of our history, says Duncan.

Property insightsHow important is it to have your property featured on the most popular web sites? The answer is very important.Genuine buyers are waiting for new listings to come to the market. They will log onto the web sites several times a day, they will have registered buyer alerts and they will want to view the property ahead of any open homes. These people are very serious about purchasing and they will be attracted to your property by the web site presentation, most importantly by the photographs. Your photographs should be representative of the property and the property features and they must be sharp and enticing. Pre-photo preparation is critical - de-clutter, have the bed covers smooth and flat surfaces clear, showers should be free of personal items, towels neatly folded, curtains should be evenly drawn. The gardens should be tidy, unhealthy pot plants removed or replaced, lawns cut and childrens play areas tidy and organised. Outside photos should be taken when the house is in full sun. Dark shadows do not look attractive but sometimes cannot be avoided. Your agent should be mindful of all of the above and be able to work with you to ensure that your property is presented to the market in the best possible way. It does take a little effort to get it right but you will be rewarded by a positive response to your web site presentation.Happy selling.

and Christchurch Boys High.Although Larrys career path to the top job at Waimea appeared to have been carefully mapped out, he says it was never planned that way. In fact, Larry admits he never intended to be a teacher and got into the job quite by ac-cident. When I was a student at Nelson College I really loved science, so when I left school I became a science technician with the Ministry of Agricul-ture and Fisheries. Then I wanted to get some more qualifications so I went to university to do a science degree but I had no money so I took a teaching scholarship.I only did it to pay my way through university - I had no intention of going teaching. But when I graduated I went relief-teaching at Christchurch Boys High and found I loved it. Its interesting, though, because my career path was never planned. I just applied for the jobs as they came up and here I am 43 years later.Larry says one of the biggest challenges he has faced at Waimea College has been managing the schools rapid growth. The school has grown from 1100 students to 1550 in the last 12 years and they have worked hard to ensure that the school hasnt got so big that students get lost.Larry says it has been a really difficult decision to leave Waimea but he feels the timing is right. The school is in good heart and he is also keen to expand his role as a mentor with the Princi-pals Programme run by Centre for Educational Leadership at University of Auckland. Its been a really difficult decision because I have a real passion about teaching. We also have great staff and students here but the time is right for me to go and let someone else with fresh ideas take over. Ive also been doing some mentoring in recent years and have had to fit it around everything

else, so now Ill get the chance to focus on that. I work with new principals and help them with things like learning how to manage staff issues, make community connections and develop a vi-sion for their schools. Larry says he has had many highlights during his time at Waimea including seeing the schools students excel at sporting and musical compe-titions, opening new buildings like the schools $2.4million gymnasium and working with such dedicated and talented teachers.Last week I attended the sports prizegiving and the level of achievement of those young people blew me away. I always enjoy watching school sport and when I told my wife I was resigning she said good, Ill be able to see you at weekend without going to sport. Larry says there havent been too many down-sides to the job although reflects that it is always incredibly sad and emotionally tough when you lose a staff member or a student. The battle to secure funding for the schools new gym, after the Ministry of Education changed the rules, was also a difficult period for the school.School Board of Trustees deputy chair, Sue Mal-thus says Larry has been a wonderful principal and his unexpected resignation came as a big shock at last board weeks meeting. Waimea College has been so lucky to have Lar-ry. He is such a good leader of the board and his staff. The parents and students have a lot of respect for him too. He has such a good rapport with his students and hes always been so ap-proachable. Larry has always been totally honest with us and we have had a great relationship based on that trust. Hes also been very good at tackling the big issues head on and making the right de-cision quickly - he will be a huge loss. Sue says Associate Principal, Graeme Smith, will take up the role of acting principal until the board appoints Larrys replacement.

Federated Farmers are urging the government to support the Tas-man District Councils Waimea Community Dam project to pre-vent a critical shortage of water for urban and farming development. The council is presently holding a public consultation process for the dam in the Lee Valley which is de-signed to store water for irrigation and urban and industrial users. It will cost around $74.6 million with irrigators expected to contribute a significant proportion of the funds. Its not a matter of whether the

dam goes ahead, it is how it goes ahead, Federated Farmers Nel-son provincial president, Martin OConnor says.We are living in a catch 22, be-cause the build is likely to cost ir-rigators $520 per hectare and in-crease rates by 11 cents per cubic metre a year, but our rural and ur-ban communities cannot survive without it. The Nelson-Tasman region is drying up whilst its population is growing at an exceptional rate. The significance of this is not lost

on the community after the 2001 drought dried the rivers up for three weeks and salt water was de-tected near the TDC water take.Martin says the district is extreme-ly sensitive to changes in water flow and during a drought water takes are stopped, when farmers need water the most. He says the water insecurity is also stunting urban and business growth. The social and economic benefits of the dam reach far beyond the Waimea community, but it needs to be affordable. Right now the

cost of the dam is pushing us into a desperate situation, but with the councils and governments sup-port we can make this work, by softening the financial blow over time.Martin says the dam is the most important single infrastructure in-vestment the Tasman community will make in ensuring a sustainable future for our community. I only hope that it is not just the ratepayers who will be footing the bill for the next generations, he says.

    Government money needed for dam

Nelsons kapahaka group are being put through their paces in an effort to get haka fit for the national kapahaka festival next year.Te Whatukura Kapahaka club has been do-ing fitness sessions with Greg Witika at Wairua Body Coaching Systems in Stoke. After a solid workout, Greg makes the group perform in the gym to get them used to performing with a high heart rate. And they hope it will help them during the com-petition in Christchurch in March.Awhina Kihi a co-tutor and performer with the Te Whatukura Kapahaka club came up with the idea, and says it is just the first step in a plan to use traditional movement and perform-ing arts to inspire and motive local Maori and Pacific Islanders to embrace a more active and healthy lifestyle.

With over twenty years involvement with Kapa-haka, I have learnt it is the perfect vehicle for Mori and Pacific cultures to become involved in an active and healthy lifestyle, she says.Greg says there is more to becoming haka fit than physical strength and stamina and hes coaching the performers to utilise natural movement. But were also talking about nutrition and belief in oneself, so that on the day the group can step out with confidence knowing they are going to give the very best they can. After the work with the kapahaka group, Awhi-nas vision for a community outreach programme is taking shape, with the successful completion of the first stage of a funding application with Te Ptahitanga. If final funding is granted, they plan to take the programme to the wider community.

Brightwater School and the Brightwater Community Church are helping to make this Christmas a lot happier for children in the Pacific Islands by getting behind Operation Christmas Child. For the last two years, the church has packed up presents in shoe boxes for children aged up to 14 to be donated to Operation Christmas Child. The international charity programme is organised by Christian relief organisation, Samaritans Purse, and has sent more than 100 million shoeboxes full or presents to needy children around the world since 1993.And this year the church approached Bright-water School principal, Gerald Baldwin, to help out and the school got right behind the project with each classroom contributing a shoebox full of presents for a boy and a girl. That brought the total number of shoeboxes contributed by the Brightwater community up to 95, almost double last years total. We thought it would be good to include the school and Gerald said they would be happy to come on board, school parent Sarah Matheson says. The first year the church did it they had 20 boxes and last year they had 50 so the school has helped it grow to about 90.Sarahs mother, Ele Smeaton, who initiated the churchs involvement in Operation Christmas Child, says the project had become a real community effort. I saw a brochure about it and thought it was a good idea so I went to our pastor, Martin Har-rison, and we got it underway. The church got right behind it and now we are involving the community more and more.Year three pupil, Kaelen Grafton, says he put some colouring-in pens and sticker and toys in the shoebox he helped fill. Other boxes in-cluded clothing, tennis balls, balloons, soft toys and pencil cases. We have lots here and we dont need so much so its a good idea to share it around, Kaelen says.

A pop-up art gallery has opened on Tra-falgar St and the artist behind it says its a fantastic way for people to check out some local art in time for Christmas. The gallery is in the building where Foxy Lady was, opposite SBS Bank. Artist Marilyn Andrews says this is the third pop-up art gallery she has opened. We fill the void in between tenancies so were on a week-to-week lease, which means if people want to see it they have to get in quick. There are 11 artists with work on dis-

play at the new gallery and Marilyn says its a nice collaboration. We share the load, share the costs and share the space, and it gives local artists an outlet to show their work. It works out really well. The pop-up gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm and Marilyn is encouraging people to get in quick. We really dont know how long were here for, it could be two weeks or it could be twenty weeks.

  • Teddy bear shearing, medieval archery and dogs rounding up ducks will feature at this years Tapawera Boys and Girls Agri-cultural Club Show. The teddy bear shear-ing competition, which takes place in a working woolshed, complete with wood-en hand shearers, proved very popular last year. Promotions coordinator, Belinda Palmer, hopes that other events such as best fancy dressed pet and dog with the loud-est bark competitions will be just as popular. Possum Bournes number 23 rally car will also be on display at the show and you can have your photo taken in it for a small donation, all proceeds from this will go to Christchurchs Bone Marrow Cancer Trust. The show, which was established during the Second World War, was coordinated by the education sec-tor to teach children animal and livestock husbandry to help out on the farm whilst the men were away fight-ing. Today, Tapawera

is only one of two Boys and Girls Agricultural Club shows remaining in the country.More traditional competitions such as equestrian, wood chopping and sheep shearing will be con-tested with the grand parade held at the end of the day. The Tapaw-era Fire Brigade will

also be operating a water slide at the show, so togs and a change of clothes are advised. The Tapawera Boys and Girls Agricultural Club show will be held 10am to 4pm on Sat-urday, November 1 at the Tapawera School grounds. Entry is free for all children and $4 for adults.

Nelson Miniatures Club hosted the 2014 New Zealand Association of Miniature Enthusiasts Convention last week which culminated in an exhibition of miniature displays at Waimea College. The theme for the exhibition was Bon Apptit and included miniature displays of all shapes and sizes created by association members and clubs throughout New Zealand. A wedding marquee complete with lights, dressed tables and wedding buffet was cre-ated by Mary and Jeff Saxton from Richmond. Their exhibit took a year to complete with Jeff building the structure and Mary making all of the finer details such as serviettes and flowers by hand. Nelson miniature club member, Rae van der Logt, created several displays for the exhibit and enjoys working on the time consuming miniatures it allows you to use all of your creative skills including painting, woodwork, book binding and knitting, says Rae.The 15 working members of the Nelson Minia-tures Club were thrilled with the steady flow of visitors to the event and were very thankful for the wonderful volunteer support they received from the local community.

    Got a story?

  • Locals renting out homes for tourists:I have been alerted to a story that you have recently run on holiday

houses. As an association we have nothing against people renting their houses out for short term accommodation. We do, however take considerable umbrage at the amazing unfairness perpetuated by councils that allow such an unfair play-ing field. Private homes compete di-rectly with commercial accommodation but are not required to have the same safety features and compliance issues that commercial accommodation pro-viders are compelled to have. Domestic accommodation providers are not re-quired to pay the hefty costs levied by councils that commercial accommoda-tors are compelled to bear. They are pro-vided with services for free by councils that are a cost to commercial accom-modation providers and they make no contribution to the running of Nelson Tasman Tourism that commercial ac-commodation providers are, again by the council, compelled to make.We believe that domestic accommo-dators are a vital part of the accom-modation offer in any market but they shouldnt be subsidised by all the other ratepayers. They shouldnt be able to of-fer substandard accommodation and they shouldnt be allowed to freeload off those that they compete with by not supporting the sterling work being done by Nelson Tasman Tourism. We believe that a council serving the best interests of their community should address these issues and not assiduously

ignore them. The council is putting their community and their visitors at risk! All that we ask for is a level playing field on which to compete.Michael Baines, Chief Executive, Motel Association of New Zealand.

Ripping people off, greedy sods.Brenda Kenny.

I think its a great idea... bring tourists, such as families who

may not like to stay in motels. They spend money in Nelson and boost local business. Also gives people a break from the mortgage for a while. No brainer re-ally if they have somewhere else to stay, such as extended family. Amanda Duncan.

Makes it hard for struggling mo-tels who have gone through a

    long winter. Bonita Wilkinson.

Items stolen off clothes line:Yes [it happened to me] but yonks ago, when I lived in Stoke.

Towels, jumpers and some kids cloth-ing. But she was caught. Jeez, thats real desperate measures right there. Sharon May Patterson.

Years ago in The Wood my daughter and I lost bras and

knickers. Reported it to the police. A while later a whole lot of undies were found in the bush. A guy was charged. Ours werent among them, guess the guy must have liked ours so much he decided to wear them. Brenda Kenny.

Some people must be so desper-ate. Or just plain weirdos.

    Janelle Thorpe.

Hazel Trethowen good on you for making everyone aware I

hope you get your things back. That just sucks big time. Ema Posa.

Fingers crossed I get it back!Hazel Trethowen.

Thank you for letting everyone know. The pictures you put up of

your dress is gorgeous. I would be upset too, if someone stole my best items of clothing. I hope the burglar gets caught, and everyone gets their belongings back. Jannelle Patterson.

Makos lose ITM Cup final:I think they put in the hard yards to get where they did, so huge

congrats to them for making the final. Gotta respect that. Sharon Tarapipi Pi.

Seeking witnesses:Hi, were seeking witnesses to a car verses truck on Tuesday 7th

outside Carters on Nayland Rd between 2:30pm and 3pm. Deemed to be a metal-lic dark green Honda as I have the wing mirror left behind. Any info would be much appreciated. Number plate would be a bonus. Thanks heaps. Carl and Lauryce Colvill.

  • It was destiny that brought Neil and Shirley Bowe together but it still took a little bit of prompting from Shirley to arrange the date that led to 60 years of happy marriage. The Brightwater couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with 27 fam-ily members in Nelson last Thursday. Neil and Shirley were married in St Co-lumbus Church in Naenae, Wellington ,on 23 October, 1954 after meeting at Neils uncle and aunts place two years earlier.Neil says he moved to Wellington from Inangahua to find work after a disagreement with my father on the front lawn. He stayed with his uncle and aunt, who lived two doors from Shirleys family, and it was only a mat-ter of time before the two met.Shirley used to babysit for my uncle and aunt so I got to know her soon after I moved to Wellington. Then I got home from work one night and my aunt said youd better go out and buy a corsage because Shirley wants to take you to her works ball - I had to buy a suit as well.A year after their first date, Neil pro-posed to Shirley and asked her parents for their permission to marry their daughter at the same time. I went to her parents for a meal and brought the subject up at the dinner ta-ble, Neil says. It wasnt really a tradi-tional proposal but everyone seemed to agree it was a good idea.Shirley says they moved to Nelson about a year after they got married and

Neil, who had worked as a spraypainter for Ford and then General Motors in Wellington, got a job as bushman with Valletta Sawmill in Hope. They started a family, raising three girls, Melanie, Christine and Brenda, who all still live in Nelson, and a boy, Peter, who lives in Melbourne. We came down to Nelson to see my auntie and bought a section on Main Rd Hope for 164 pounds, Shirley says. We put a house on it and weve been in Nelson ever since.

Shirley says the secret to their long and happy marriage has been spending a lot of time with their children, grandchil-dren and great grandchildren and keep-ing busy and working hard. A former champion axeman, Neil, still cuts up firewood for all his family while Shirley helps out with the stacking.Neil and Shirley have 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren who now call Neil Chop-chop after seeing him hard at work splitting wood for the family.

It may be considered unlucky because the number resembles a wicket without bails. Standing on one leg, or if youre sitting down, keeping both feet off the ground is supposed to prevent disaster until the score changes. The mayor of Nelson did the Nelson at Civic House on Tuesday as did students from local schools. What a stunner of a weekend that has just gone. Warm, beauti-ful sunny skies, albeit with a little wind thrown in for good measure. It wouldnt be a Labour weekend if the weather was perfect, however Saturday morning was the pick of the days with boats galore at Tas-man and Okiwi Bay boat ramps.Gusty winds made fishing difficult on Sunday and Monday, although a few DBFC members managed to sneak out in Pelorus Sound in shel-tered waters and land a couple of big reds as the snapper start moving up the sound.Scallops are still plentiful and in good nick. The odd kingfish was caught at Durville but the snapper were the winners overall. Reports of snapper ranging from 1 kg to 10kg having been caught in Tasman Bay, but still not in huge numbers yet as the water temperature is still a bit cool for them to come in, and with a wet week ahead it will fur-ther slow them down a bit more. The kayakers have informed us they have been catching gurnard, kahawai and small snapper in and around Cable Bay, as well as Okiwi Bay. Flasher rigs from 2/0 up to 6/0 hooks, with small bits of pillies, have been doing the damage.Last Sunday, the Dawnbreakers

Fishing Club had their first club social day, held at The Tasman Bay Cruising Club. Over 50 members attended making it a great turnout for the season opener. It is a great way to meet like-minded people in a social environment and find out whats going on fishing-wise in your own back-yard.As an example of how the club helps its members, we are actively promoting safety on the water, by encouraging and discounting the price to members to partake in a Day Skippers course. We believe that everyone who owns a water-craft would be safer having done the course. We have also organised weekends away as well as day trips on the club calendar. We also have regular guest speakers on a variety of topics every month. Our guest speaker this month from MPI Fisheries (MAF) was able to go through the ins and outs of the rules regarding catching cod in the Marlborough Sounds, size/bag limits on finfish, and the laws on the use of longlines. It was very in-formative and enabled members to have points clarified that they were not sure about. To join or find out more about the club, email us at [email protected]
