Message from the PresidentThe end of summer marksthe start of a new year forFamily Service of the Piedmont. I hope you will join us as we reflect onthe year’s successes and challenges, and look forwardto the year to come, at ourAnnual Meeting luncheon,September 23rd at Sedgefield Country Club.

We have had a successful year in many ways. First andforemost, our success is measured by change in the livesof the families we serve. Our cover story tells of one out-of-work homeowner faced with foreclosure, whofound new hope through our Mortgage Protection Program. This story is just one of many examples. Eachday our amazing staff is working to empower childrenand adults to regain financial, mental and family health;to rise above a history of domestic violence or sexualabuse; to find strength, restore stability and thrive.

Our outstanding leadership team is key to the success ofour agency. I am happy to welcome Shay Harger as our new Director of Victim Services, overseeing our programs for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crime. Shay’s responsibilities will include the relaunch of Harmony House – our supervised visitation and exchange program has been approved to resume operations this year.

Our agency’s success depends on our ability to fund ourprograms effectively. Last year, 27% of our fundingcame from government grants. We know this numberwill only decrease in future years. But the needs of thefamilies and children we serve are becoming no less urgent. Our clients are increasingly reliant upon people

like you who support our agency in so many ways. Lastyear, individual and corporate donations, including giving through local United Ways and directly to FamilyService, made up more than 40% of our revenue. I amhappy and grateful to say that this number is increasing, thanks to the steadfast generosity of our many friendsand supporters.

In particular, this year our Special Events saw remarkablegrowth. Our 19th Annual High Point Oyster Roast, presented by Smart Choice, was the biggest and bestever. (Save the date of March 7th 2014 for the 20thAnniversary Oyster Roast, sure to be an even bigger hitin High Point!) Our Greensboro Oyster Roast’s 10thAnniversary event, presented by VF, was another spectacularevening of good food, good friends and great entertainment(see story on opposite page). Finally, our 4th Annual PigPickin’ also broke records and helped cement that event’sgrowing reputation as the best summer night out inJamestown (see story on page 4).

Together, these events raised a net income of more than $450,000, an increase of 32% over last year. Thisincredible result testifies to the generosity and vision ofour community, as well as the talents and tenacity of ourvolunteer event committees. I am immensely grateful toeveryone who helped plan and execute these fabulousevents. Let’s keep up the momentum for even greaterthings in 2014!

To be successful, a human services agency requires threethings: a committed and capable staff, sound management, and strong community support. Family Service of thePiedmont has displayed all three magnificently in thepast year. With your help, we will continue building onour strengths in the coming year as we work for safe andhealthy families in the Piedmont Triad.

The Guild of Family Service of High Point heldits annual Yard Sale in May. Guild memberscame together to organize, sort and set up priorto the sale, as well as donating many items. The sale was well attended and raised over$2,000 to support Family Service’s programs in High Point.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, this year thesale took place indoors, off Main Street in HighPoint. “The new location brought in a far greaternumber of shoppers than in years past,” said theGuild’s Yard Sale Chair Donna Cumby. “Weare so appreciative to the building owner forallowing the Guild to use their facility. Shoppersreally enjoyed themselves and got some amazingdeals.”

A little rain didn’t dampen the Fourth AnnualJamestown Pig Pickin’ on August 10th.This year’s event with a beach party themedrew a crowd of more than 550 people andraised proceeds of $65,000 for Family Serviceof the Piedmont.

Uncooperative weather threatened to spoil the event. Thankfully, PigPickin’ Committee Co-Chair Mark Whitesell, Corporate Manager forGrand Rental Station, stepped up and supplied additional tents to keepguests dry and happy. “Mark really went above and beyond in makingthe last minute changes needed to prepare for the rain,” said his Co-ChairKris Flynt. “The people of Jamestown didn’t let a little wet weatherkeep them away! I ’m honored to be a part of such a caring and dedicatedcommunity.”

Bright colored umbrellas andbeach towels, hanging tropicalfish and an array of seasidedécor conceived by KathyJohnson and Tricia Seymourtransformed the grounds ofMagnolia Farm, the historichome of Jenny and George Ragsdale, into a coastal paradise. Guests

raved over the delicious spread of all-you-can-eat BBQ and Chicken donated by BBQ Joe’s, southern sidesand desserts by Above and BeyondCatering, and a delightful assortmentof appetizers by Southern Roots

Restaurant. Music and dancing was the main appeal of the event as heartand soul of beach music band The Embers returned for a second year.

Guests also enjoyed a fun photo booth, a live auction presented by professional auctioneer Jon Manring, and a silent auction featuringitems from merchants throughout the Jamestown area. Together the auctions raised $11,500. After theevent was done, members and friendsof Adams Farm CommunityChurch Boy Scout Troop 3volunteered to help clear the site.

“Each year’s Pig Pickin’ seems to getbetter and better,” Whitesell said.“This year featured many new elements that added to the excitement andfun of the event. We had lots of great sponsors and 121 host couples, anall time high! It was another great experience serving alongside of thishardworking and dedicated committee.
