1. Signs
ZODIAC/SIGNS AND THE PLANETS
The Ecliptic is he Sun's path in the heavens. It passes exactly through the center of zodiac longitudinally.
The zodiac is a broad band or belt in heavens extending 9 degrees on either side of the Ecliptic. It is an
endless circle. In order to measure distances along this circle an arbitrary point is established. This point is
called as the first point of Aries. The zodiac revolves once in a day on its axis from east to west. The ecliptic
is divided into 12 eual compartments! called the signs of the zodiac. Each compartment covers an arc
of 30 degrees. Each sign has its own peculiar ualities! attributed to it by the ancient "aha rishi#s after
careful and profound observations and meditation.
Each degree of the zodiac is divided into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds. The $edic seers
counted time in Ghatikas and Vighatikas. %ther time measuring units are also there but &ust as minutes
and seconds are generally spo'en so also are the (hati'as and $ighati'as are used. 2 )1*2 (hati'as are

The ecliptic is mar'ed by 2/ constellations or Nakshatras called the lunar mansions because the "oon has
a special connection with them.
The time ta'en by the "oon to traverse these 2/ stellar mansions is counted as one 0unar month. It is
roughly 2/. days. Each constellation is divided into uarters and are 'nown as the 3a'shatras padas.
There are in all 1,4 3a'shatra padas in the zodiac. %ne pada is eual to 51*degree of celestial arc. The
lunar mansions are also called as the 6asis or 6adical signs of moon. The 6asis and 3a'shatras are rec'oned
from the same point i.e. zero degree longitude of 7ries or "esha.
THE PLANETARY SYSTEM
The planetary system! which is also 'nown as the solar system or 8urya mandala! consists of the 8un and
other planets held by the gravitational power of the 8un and they revolve around him. The period of
revolution differs according to the size! distance and speed of the planet. The $edic astrology names the 8unas Ravi! "oon as Chandra! "ars as Mangal! "ercury as Budha! upiter as Guru! $enus as Shukra and
8aturn as Shani. :esides these! the ascending and descending nodes of "oon ;Rahu !etu< are also
ta'en as apratya'sha (rahas or invisible influences.
The word Graha is specific to Indian -oroscope and it symbolizes the heavenly bodies influencing the life on
this earth and is not a classification solar system as 8tar! =lanets! 8atellites etc as is done in modern
astronomy. Each (raha is the ruler of group of stars and is called as the stellar lord. Thus the 9 (rahas
rule the 2/ constellations.

7ccording to a very ancient astronomical treatise 'nown as the 8urya siddhanta! 8aturn is the most distant
planet from the Earth. upiter! "ars! 8un! $enus! "ercury and "oon come in serial order of their distances
from the earth.

astrology! by the seers for reasons best 'nown to them. It cannot be said that they were unaware of their
