DIRECTIONS TO TEACHERS

This test is designed to test the skills that teachers who participated in the gap analysis meeting felt should be mastered by the end of 2nd grade. Most of the tested skills are from the expectation of the 2nd grade GLCEs. There are a few additional skills tested. Knowing the addition facts to 10 + 10 is a first grade GLCE. Knowing the corresponding subtraction facts is not a GLCE at all. All teachers can agree that quick recall of math facts is an important skill for students to have, and appropriate practice of facts should take place at all elementary grades. Therefore, each end of the year test will include testing of math fact recall. Other points of note are:

The test is designed to have literacy be of little or no effect on the student’s ability to be successful on this test. Please read and discuss directions with all of the students. We are trying to test their ability to do the math. For struggling readers accommodations should be made so their scores are not affected by their inability to read any problem. Please do not do any re-teaching or reviewing of the math concepts during the test.

A few problems are multiple choice and use the bubbling system that students will see on the 3rd grade MEAP. The bubbles were copied from the released MEAP and enlarged. Please take time before giving the test to do the mini-lesson on bubbles that is at the end of these directions. Stress that they are to shade in only one circle and NOT mark the other two answer choices at all. When taking the MEAP, crossing out either of the incorrect answers will invalidate their answer to a question.

The test can be given in many sections. Please do not administer another section until you have had time to correct the previous section and record scores. Do not pressure yourself by doing all the sections and then having a large amount of correcting to do. Do try to find a volunteer/IA to do the scoring for you. Scores are to be recorded for each of the sections.

We will gather and track the scores from the following sections when end of the year testing is done. To do this an excel file will be created using a class list and the following section headings. Entering the student’s number correct for each section will make it possible to graph each student’s scores, find a class average and if desired export the scores into a data base. If you are using this test as a pre-test for 3rd grade it will be possible to do this also.

o Count, Write, Order Numbers and Place Value – Test Pages 1,2 = 21 points

o Addition/Subtraction – Test Pages 3-5 = 54 pointso Multiplication/Division – Test Pages 6-8 = 8 pointso Fractions – Test Pages 8-10 = 10 pointso Decimals – Test Pages 10 -11 =8 pointso Measurement – Test Pages 12-15 = 18 pointso Geometry/data – Test Pages 16-18 = 14 points

The answer key and GLCE correlation for each question is contained in a separate file. The answer key contains the answer typed or highlighted in red. The file needs to be printed by a color printer for the answers to show.

Bubbling your Answer Choice

Some of the items on this test are multiple-choice. Multiple-choice items require you to choose the one correct answer from among three answer choices. Mark your answer on your paper by completely filling in the bubble next to the correct answer. If you erase because you changed your mind make sure you erase your incorrect choice completely.

Be careful not to make any marks in the bubbles next to the letters A, B, or C except for the one that goes with your answer choice. Do not cross out or write on the other letters or bubbles.

This is an example of how to correctly mark your answer for a multiple choice answer.

On this test the letters and bubbles have been made bigger to make them easier for you to find. Also they are horizontal and look like this:

When you see bubbles and letters like this with three answer choices, fill in the bubble in front of the letter that is with the answer you think is correct.
