There is a movie, produced by and available on Netflix, entitled The Two Popes. It is a creative work of fiction based on an imaginary encounter between Pope Benedict XVI and the man who would be his successor, Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina. The writer and director employ the enormously talented actors Jonathan Price (Bergoglio) and Anthony Hopkins (Pope Benedict) to draw the audience into an unfolding drama between a man known for his great devotion to tradition and one who sees the urgent need for the church to engage with the world. The choreography of the real persons being portrayed gives a new meaning to the old term it takes two to tango. But I digress. This past week at the Vatican a real life drama unfolded when it was announced that the pope emeritus—Benedict XVI—had joined with the highly placed curial official, Cardinal Robert Sarah, in publishing a little book about the necessity of not relaxing the discipline of clerical celibacy because of their contention that it is of the essence of priestly ministry that it should be devoted exclusively to the love of Christ’s bride, the Church. That two erudite and articulate members of the hierarchy should share their convictions in such a book, it had the effect of placing enormous pressure on Pope Francis who is on the verge of making a decision whether or not to allow proven married deacons in the Amazon region of Latin America to be ordained priests to respond to a dire shortage of clergy to celebrate the Holy Eucharist. Pope Francis was reported to have reacted strongly in insisting that Pope Benedict’s personal secretary, Bishop George Ganswein, make whatever arrangements might be required to remove Pope Benedict’s name and signature from the book as a co-author. When he complied a hornet’s nest of intrigue and controversy came to light over the subject of clarifying in church law the duties of a retired pope—as there are likely to be more in the future. The bottom line is the Church can only have one authoritative successor of Peter at a time. Only one who can teach with authority what the church professes and believes. Make no mistake, if the retired pontiff wishes to express his convictions, there is a distinguished list of his writings as a cardinal and a pope that people may consult. But this should not be done in any way that may be seen as challenging the critically important role of the Pope as the one who confirms the church in unity.

Jesus said, “Ask and you shall receive.” So, I’m asking for Six sopranos (women who can sing the melody line) to join the choir as soon as possible. This will involve a commitment to sing at the 9 am Mass and take part in Tuesday night rehearsals.

The United States Congress designated January as Cervical Health Awareness Month. What is cervical
cancer? Cervical cancer is cancer that starts in the cervix, the narrow opening into the uterus from the vagina. More
than 13,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, and more than 4,000 of
women will die. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer for women worldwide however it is also
one of the most preventable types of cancer. Deaths from cervical cancer in the United States continue to decline
by approximately 2 percent a year. This decline is primarily due to the widespread use of the Pap test to detect
cervical abnormalities and allow for early treatment. Cervical cancer tends to occur during midlife. It is most
frequently diagnosed in women between the ages of 35 and 44. It rarely affects women under age 20, and more
than 15 percent of diagnoses are made in women older than 65. But in women over 65, cancer typical occurs in
women who were not receiving regular screening ([email protected]) .

Sacrificial Giving Annual Renewal
This year our Stewardship & Administration Commission has strongly recommended placing renewed emphasis on giving online or through automatic bank drafts. These methods allow everyone the opportunity to get the full benefits that come from tithing whether or not they are actually able to be in our church every Sunday. Think about it.
We are in the process of investigating the accuracy of the Sacrificial Giving figures published above. A week ago, we were all caught up. Stand by for a clarification next week.

CONTINUING TO BUILD
A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
Circle of Grace and the Safe Environment Program have been designed to assist children and youth of all ages to know how to handle situations in which they may be vulnerable to abuse. The materials choose words and expressions carefully and sensitively on age appropriate levels so that young people can learn how to protect themselves and how to reach out to trusted adults for help. The presentation to the children is scheduled for January 26th during religious education classes. Contact Tommie Tran or Ann Grover for more information.
There was a time when all Catholics believed that the primary reason to baptize an infant was to make it possible for them to make it to Heaven. It has taken 50 years so far to convince them that the primary reason for doing so is to make them adopted children of God, siblings of Jesus Christ, and dwelling places of the Holy Spirit. Baptism also makes us a holy and priestly people, making us eligible to offer God true worship.
We conduct this mandatory one session program for parents who are members of our parish planning to baptize a child for the very first time. First time godparents are also welcome, but participation is optional. There are other expectations of parents who are going to promise to raise their child in the faith of the Church. Following this class, parents must contact Father Jack at least 30 days before the date you are requesting to see if there may be any special circumstances in scheduling the actual baptism. Baptisms are normally not scheduled during Lent which begins February 26th, so this is the time to attend if you are planning a baptism before Easter.
