TIME TO START PLANNING!This year, the rst night of Pesach will be on Monday, April 18th, and for those of you who have a second night seder,Tuesday, April 19th is the date. Like a Golden Thread that has kept the Jewish people linked through thousands of years,Passover is traditionally celebrated in Jewish homes, with family, friends and community members.

The community seder model developed as a way to provide a place for people who were not part of a home-based seder, and Har Shalom has sponsored many community seders in the past. This year, because we want to encourage personal,home-based connections between our members, we are asking our Har Shalom community to welcome guests to their homes for a rst or second night seder. Har Shalom volunteers will be contacting you to match members who are hostingseders with current and prospective members who need seats at the table. Whether you’re planning a seder designed for tiny tots or a long, deep late-night exploration of the Haggadah, we will try to match you so that everyone is able to attend ahome-based seder if they desire to.

When our Pesach coordinator volunteers contact you, please open your homes to your extended Har Shalom ‘family.’ If you want help planning your seder, we have people and information to support you. We can also lend out Haggadahs thatwe’ve used at previous community seders. And, if you would like a place at the table for you and your family, let the Pesachcoordinator volunteer know.

As it says in the Haggadah, “Let all who are hungry come and eat.” Our tradition acknowledges that hunger can be spiritualas well as physical, and Passover is the quintessential opportunity for building community on all levels. Please respondopenly when the Pesach coordinator volunteer contacts you.

To continue Pesach festivities, we are planning a Freilich Shabbat, with live music, singing and Passover desserts on Fridayevening, April 22.

Mechirat Chametz, the Selling of Chametz

To avoid owning chametz/ leavened food or having chametz in your possession during Passover, tradition provides us with a process called mechirat chametz. Originally, this process was devised for those Jews in the food or liquor business with substantial quantities of chametz. To avoid serious nancial loss, mechirat chametz was devised to allow the sale of chametz to a non-Jew. It is an example of how Jewish law can respond to a problem created by its own legal system.

While the form of the sale has changed over time, today it involves the real sale of chametz to a non-Jew before Passover. It is a real sale in the sense that the non-Jew could pay the purchase price and keep the chametz. Also,

during Passover, the non-Jew has the right to come and eat as much of the chametz as she/he wants. After Passover, the non-Jew resells the chametz to the Jew.

Because it is complicated, the sale is usually done through a rabbi who acts as your agent in the transaction. The rabbi needs an authorization from you, which should be in writing, but if necessary can be by phone. Only food is sold, not pots or dishes.
