Application Note – Solution – Considerations
3 topics to be considered for such a (SEMS):
• Correct Selection of Power Analysers
• Communication Network
• IT – Environment
12 April 2023 Slide: 22SEMS
Application Note – Solution – Power Analysers
Selection of Power Analyzers:Designing a SEMS requires first of all the selection of the measurement points. Typically these are:
• PCC – Point of common coupling (connection to utility Co)• Main feeders from supply transformers• UPS systems• Stand by emergency generators• Large HV loads (e.g. large compressors)• Risky loads (e.g. continued processes)• Loads with high contribution to power quality pollution• Heavily loaded or critical grid points• …

12 April 2023 Slide: 28SEMS
Application – Energy Efficiency
• Usage of motors with higher efficiency class
• Usage of modern drives technology
• Higher utilization of motors (no large safety margins)
• Smart control of electrical loads and processes
• Reduction of harmonic currents
• Reduction of demand peaks (cutting utility charges)

Application – Financial SummaryInvestment for the Smart Energy Management System: (including power analyzers, communication, IT) 230 000 €
Investment for Solutions: (incl. max. demand, dynamic PFC, active harmonic filter, …) 455 000 €Total Investment: 685 000 €Saving of Energy cost:Reduction of maximum demand charges 75 000 €/p.a.Reduction of energy sourcing from the spot market 50 000 €/p.a.Reduction of kWh consumption 180 000 €/ p.a.Reduction of maintenance cost: 45 000 €/ p.a.Reduction of drives and equipment failures: 75 000 €/ p.a.Saving due to avoiding production stops: 70 000 €/ p.a.*Total Savings: 495 000 €/p.a.Return of investment: 1.4 years(*) Comparatively low figure considered as it was not very clear before the installation of the SEMS which production stops were related to PQ problems! Probability is high, that this figure could be five times higher.

Application – Client Summary
Dr. Schmidt, Factory Engineer, summarized as follows:
“This energy management project shows that often, like in life the root causes are not that simple to identify and require intensive work, but the hard job pays off and over the long term earns a lot of money for the Company.
Overall we are very satisfied with the SEMS, especially the Janitza electronics UMG measurement devices and the software provided by Janitza. Furthermore the after sales service as well as the application support was most important for the successful conduction of this project!
As we are a global enterprise we are now thinking about the next step, introducing a global SEMS including all of our production sites across four continents.”

12 April 2023 Slide: 33SEMS
Providing base line energy consumption of power
utility, with trending, also for negotiating a new
energy supply contract with power utilities
Benchmarking of various production lines in a factory,
buildings, factories of an international enterprise,
shops of a commercial enterprise (e.g. Mc Donalds)
Transparency of the energy distribution system
Create awareness for energy saving
Provide Data to meet CRC commitments
Benefits of SEMS
12 April 2023 Slide: 34SEMS
Higher efficiency in an energy distribution system, i.e. higher
utilization factor (if one knows exactly how a critical point is
loaded, it can be loaded much higher, the “big thumb” = high
safety margin is not required Peak demand management system (for active reduction of high
demand charges)Active control of loads with devices such as UMG604 (e.g. light
control in an office tower, switch off all lights during night, active air-condition control with the temperature input, time control of large compressors to avoid peak loads at critical busy times of the day, ...)
Data management via the GridVis software provides historic data which give a lot of extra information over time, e.g. how is the loading of a certain critical network point, e.g. a transformer is a bottleneck and a new transformer is required if the kW requirement continues to rise like last two years ...
Benefits of SEMS
12 April 2023 Slide: 35SEMS
Power quality monitoring PQM• Identification of over-load scenarios before the process of
the client is stopped• Stabilisation of process, avoiding production stoppages or
break down of equipment • Root cause analysis when a failure has occurred• Alarm management, e.g. THD-V is too high, send an email
to the engineer• Power Quality Solutions specification based on the
monitoring results and detailed data and facts recorded• Data and evidential proof of short term voltage
interruptions or other PQ problems for claims against the power utilities
• Remote monitoring
