Overview

Until the 20th Century, Kidlington was very much a rural community but in 1928 land along the main road through the village was sold for housing and, just prior to World War II building of the Garden City estate was started in the south of the parish.

Since 1945 many other estates have been built and today Kidlington has a modern shopping centre, library, large village hall, market and many modern dwellings. There are a good number of Pubs, cafes and restaurants in or near the village centre as well as dispersed through the village.

Kidlington also has the headquarters of the County Fire Service, the Thames Valley Police and the County St. John Ambulance Brigade.

In addition to shops and offices within the main part of the village, Kidlington has an expanding office and commercial area along the Langford Lane to the north of the village. This Langford Locks area has a thriving business community that attracts businesses from all industry sectors.

This whole area employs nearly 4000 workers. Adjacent to Oxford Airport is the Spires Business Park with occupiers varying from the likes of Elsevier to Thames Valley Police.

Opposite is Langford Business Parks and Oxford Motor Park, a huge collection of motor traders representing many of the popular car companies.

Kidlington has many sports clubs ranging from football to running including rugby, swimming, cricket, netball, table tennis and squash.

There are various organisations providing activities for all ages from Scouting and Guiding to a camera club and the Townswomen’s Guild.

For more information about the village, see also the Kidlington Voice web-page.

As is appropriate for such a large village in England, Kidlington Parish Council is one of the largest in Oxfordshire serving an electorate of about 10,500.The offices of the Parish Council are housed within Exeter Hall - the village hall - and close to the Village Centre. The principal aim of the Parish Council is to create a thriving village in which people are proud to live and work and in which they can enjoy an environment free from unnecessary traffic, noise and pollution. The Council endeavours to: Protect and enhance the environment. Develop good communication between the Council and residents. Conduct Council business in an open, efficient and considerate way. This work is achieved through the professional staff; the main committees as well as sub committees and representation on external committees and organisations. The principle responsibilities of the Parish Council are: The management of Exeter Hall-the village hall plus council offices. Joint management (with Gosford & Water Eaton Parish Council) of Stratfield Brake-a village sports complex. Management of the Burial Grounds. Provision of allotments at 5 sites - Yarnton Road, Hazel Walk, Station Fields, Bicester Road and Blenheim Road. Representation of local opinion to other public authorities e.g. Planning applications. Recreation grounds and open spaces (and in association with the Kidlington Recreational Trust)

At the time of the 2011 Census 77.2 % of those aged 16 to 74 were in employment in Kidlington North and 79.9 % in Kidlington South with the rate of employment growth outpacing the rate of population growth over the previous 10 years.3
