Presentation: Summer School The Board received an update of 2018 Summer School from Principal Stacey Burrows. Ms Burrows explained that the purpose of Foothills School Division’s Summer School is to provide another opportunity for students to gain meaningful learning and high school credits. Summer School was held at École Secondaire Foothills Composite High School/Alberta High School of Fine Arts in Okotoks from July 3 – July 26, 2018 (19 instructional days). There was a combination of online learners and classroom based learners totaling 255 students and the success rate was an admirable 99% of students, both online and classroom learners, passed their courses. Ms Burrows is already planning for Summer School 2019 having conducted a student survey which has reveals that students prefer to be taught by a teacher in the classroom whenever possible. In addition, an active ‘What is Summer School’ promotion will start in January 2019 to clarify what Summer School is and what it is not. Presentation: Learning Technologies Director of Learning Technologies, Lyle Roberts provided an overview of Learning Technology within Foothills School Division. Mr Roberts reported on the following five items: 1

Trends – Mr Roberts covered some trends around television installations and iPads; Chromebooks; Cloudbooks; Mac Laptops; Mac Desktops; Windows Laptops; Windows Workstations; Servers.

Door Access – 2 year plan to have the swipe cards operable throughout the division. Interactive Televisions vs Smartboards – Mr Roberts explained the benefits of Interactive

Televisions. Cell Phone Use in Class Pro’s & Con’s – Mr Roberts provided an in depth report around cell

phone use in classrooms. Update – Mr Roberts provided an update on the projects currently occurring in Foothills

School Division i.e. PA/Bells Pilot; Dreambox & SOS-Q; LED Video Walls; SIP Trunking; Telus Failover Internet Feed; Television & Smartboard/Interactive streaming TV

announcements; Over the Air Television; Web Auditing Extension for Chromebooks; Webric.

DARE ProgramThe Board will establish a committee to research the educational benefits of the DARE Program to Foothills School Division.

Division Staff ReportsAssistant Superintendent, Allen Davidson provided an enrolment update as of September 30, 2018. Overall across the system the numbers remain constant.

ATA Professional DevelopmentTrustee Nichols attended the latest meeting and discussed resources, grants, and learning tools available for teachers.

Upcoming Division Celebrations and Highlights: The Literacy for Life Spelling Bee took place – congratulations to all participants and the

organizers. Friday October 5, 2018 marks World Teachers’ Day, which is recognized in over 100 countries,

to acknowledge the vital contributions that teachers make to students and society. This day was initiated by UNESCO in 1994 to celebrate, appreciate and reflect on issues in education world-wide and in particular the need for highly qualified teachers. The theme for this year is “The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher.” This theme was chosen to mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), where education is recognized as a key fundamental right. A right that cannot be fulfilled without qualified teachers.

Congratulations to Foothill School Division Communication Manager Candace Denison who will receive the Canadian Association of Communicators in Education National BRAVO Award honouring outstanding performance.

The Grand Opening to celebrate the modernization completion of EFCHS/AHSFA took place last week. Thank you and congratulations to everyone involved.
