Introduction

This guide describes how to add extra memory cards to a McAfee®

Email and Web Security

 Appliance to improve its performance.

To upgrade your appliance, the steps are briefly:

1 Switch off and disconnect the appliance.

2 If the appliance is rack-mounted, remove the appliance from its rack.

3 Open the appliance to insert the memory cards.

4 If the appliance was rack-mounted, return the appliance to its rack.

5 Reconnect and switch on the appliance.

The following sections describe the steps in more detail. After automatically starting itself, the

appliance continues to protect your network.

To confirm that the appliance is working correctly see the section, General problems .

For descriptions of the parts of the appliance, see the section, Further information .

Disconnecting the applianceUse this task to disconnect the appliance from your network.

Task 

1 Shutdown the appliance from the browser interface.

2 Disconnect the network cables from the appliance.3 Disconnect the monitor (if fitted) from the appliance.

4 Disconnect the power leads from the appliance and the power outlet.

Removing the appliance from its rack Use this task to remove the appliance from a rack.

CAUTION: The appliance is large and heavy. Do not attempt to lift it off the mounting rails by

yourself.

Task 

1 Push in and turn the thumbscrews at each end of the appliance’s front panel.

2 Pull the appliance out along the mounting rails until it stops (after about 6 in/15cm).

3 While pressing the clips at the side of the appliance, pull the appliance until it is about

halfway out of the rack.

4 With help from another person, lift the appliance off the side rails and place it on a flat

surface.

 Adding the memory cardsUse this task to open the appliance and insert the extra memory cards.

CAUTION: Take care to avoid electrostatic damage to the computer components. We recommend

using an earthed anti-static wrist strap.

Task 

1 On the left side at the rear of the appliance, undo the spring-retained nut.

2 Press on the lip at the front of the appliance's top panel, then slide and lift the top panel.

The inside of the appliance is now visible.

3 Gently lift the black plastic cover on the right side to see the memory slots.

Mounting the appliance in the rack Use this task to mount the appliance in the rack.

CAUTION: The appliance is large and heavy. Do not attempt to install it in the mounting rails

by yourself.

Task 

1 With help from another person, lift the appliance so that the side rails at the back of the

appliance align with the mounting rails in the rack, then push the appliance into the

mounting rails until it stops.

2 To secure the appliance in the rack, push in and turn the thumbscrews at each end of the

appliance’s front panel.

Reconnecting the applianceUse this task to reconnect the appliance to your network.

Task 

1 Insert power leads into the monitor and the appliance.

2 Connect the network cables to the appliance.

3 Connect the appliance and monitor power leads to power outlets.

4 Turn on the appliance by pushing the power button on the appliance.

 After automatically starting itself, the appliance continues to protect your network.

General problems

This section lists some general problems.

The appliance is not receiving power

The appliance is not receiving traffic from the network 

The appliance is not receiving powerCheck that the appliance is using the correct power cord(s) and is connected properly to a

working power outlet. If the power outlet has a switch, make sure it is on.

If the appliance is still not receiving power, check the power outlet by connecting other equipment

to it. If the power outlet is working, there is a problem with the appliance or its power cord.

Contact your supplier.

The appliance is not receiving traffic from thenetwork 

Check the following:

• The appliance is switched on and its software is running.

If the power button LED is orange, the appliance is connected but is not turned on. If the

power LED is green, the appliance is connected and turned on.

• The network cables are undamaged and connected properly to the appliance’s ports and

your network equipment. If you have not used the cables supplied with the appliance, ensure

that your cables meet the correct specification.

• Your network equipment is connected to the correct LAN ports on the appliance.

• The NIC speeds and full or half duplex settings at both ends of the connections are compatible

and have auto-negotiated their settings correctly.

• The LAN LEDs are on.

If the appliance is still not receiving network traffic, check the network cables and the network ports on your network equipment. If the cables and ports are working, there is a problem with

the appliance. Contact your supplier.

CD-ROM drive

Use the CD-ROM drive only when restoring, upgrading or diagnosing system faults on the

appliance.

Hard disk drive (HDD) LEDs

Flashes blue when the hard disk drive is in use.

Power button and LED

Turns the appliance on and off. Lights blue when the appliance is operational.

Power socket

Use the correct power cord for your location.

Serial port

Not used by the appliance.

Keyboard port

To connect a keyboard.

Mouse port

Not used by the appliance.

Copper LAN1 port (NIC 1) and LAN2 port (NIC 2)

See the labeling on the back of the unit to identify the LAN ports.

Both ports are RJ-45 10/100/1000Mbps auto-negotiating (auto-sensing) Ethernet network ports.

They must only be used with equipment designed for 10Mbps,100Mbps or 1000Mbps (1Gb)

Ethernet network use.

LAN1 port

The LAN1 port is used to connect the appliance to your network.

The LAN1 port has a default IP address of 10.1.1.108 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) to allow

you to access the appliance initially across the network.

LAN2 port

The LAN2 port has a default IP address of 10.1.2.108 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0).

UID LED

Not used by the appliance.

Monitor port

Connect a monitor to this port when you are:

• Initially configuring the appliance.

• Restoring and upgrading the appliance’s software.

• Diagnosing system faults.

NOTE: You do not use the monitor and keyboard for day-to-day management of the appliance.

Instead, use a computer with a network connection to a LAN port on the appliance, or connected

to a USB-to-Ethernet Adapter when using out-of-band management.

USB ports

Not used by the appliance.

LAN port LEDs

Each LAN port has these built-in panel status LEDs:

• Lights blue — when the port has a good link to the attached Ethernet.
