Minutes EAU General AssemblyApril 12, 2014, Stockholm, Sweden1 . Welcome by the Secretary General Opening and welcome by the Secretary General.

2 . Approval minutes General Assembly of 16 March 2013, Milan, Italy The minutes of the 2013 General Assembly are approved as a true record of the

meeting.

3 . General report by the Secretary General, P-A . Abrahamsson On behalf of the EAU Board and Executive the Secretary General expresses a sincere

thank you to the Scientific Congress Office under the chairmanship of Arnulf Stenzl and the Video Congress Committee under the chairmanship of Aurel Messas, for an excellent Scientific Congress Programme for this meeting in Stockholm.

We have an increasing number of abstracts, 4.200 abstracts have been submitted and also the video abstracts have increased exponentially. Unfortunately more than 70% of the abstracts are not approved because quality is preferred over quantity.

Also a ‘thank you’ to all the office chairs and offices for their input, not only in the scientific programme but also for their work over the last years and additionally the EAU Staff for their work.

During this meeting the election of the first ever Secretary General Elect, Prof. C. Chapple, Sheffield will take place as well as the approval of two new Office Chairmen: for the Guidelines Office – Prof. J. N’Dow, Aberdeen (UK) and for the Young Urologists Office – Dr. M. Sedelaar, Nijmegen (NL).

In addition to that, the Secretary General reminds the General Assembly that, as per 2014, the new Editor-in-Chief - Prof. Jim Catto, Sheffield (UK), will succeed Prof. Francesco Montorsi, Milan (I). Prof. Montorsi receives heartfelt gratitude for his tremendous amount of time, efforts and dedication over the years.

4 . Report by the EAU Treasurer and Audit Committee, M . Wirth, Dresden (D) The treasurer reports that the costs related to the EAU Offices and other activities

added up to € 5.462.641. The revenues were € 3.733.972, leaving us with a negative result of -/- € 1.728.669.

The total costs of the 2013 EAU meetings were € 7.951.712 and the revenues added up to € 14.285.179 resulting in a profit of € 6.333.467.


The costs related to the EAU programmes were € 13.414.353. The total revenues of the EAU programmes accumulated to the amount of € 18.019.151 leaving a financial result of € 4.604.798.

The EAU assets per 31 December 2013 were € 60.202.797. The statistics show an increase however, the future cannot be foreseen and the interest rates are 1,5% which makes it more difficult to make money out of investments.

The Treasurer shows the compilation reports from the different auditors.

The presentation of the Treasurer is concluded by requesting the General Assembly to discharge the EAU Executive Committee and the Executive Management for the policy implemented in the preceding financial year (2013) and this is agreed by the General Assembly.

The Treasurer proposes to keep the membership fee unchanged: € 120 per year for Active members. He asks for approval from the General Assembly to charge € 25 to keep receiving the printed version of European Urology as of 2015. This is approved by the General Assembly.

5 . Specific reports on the EAU Offices by the EAU Executive

5 .1 Prof . Wirth reports on the Offices related to Communication being: - History Office - Publications

History OfficeThe History Office – chaired by Dirk Schultheiss – will launch the History Office website in 2014 including a “virtual museum of Urology”, linking collections from Vienna, Düsseldorf, Helsinki and Brussels. The History Office also organized the Historical exhibition and Thematic Session “Visualization in Urology” at this Annual EAU Congress and published the 21st volume of “de Historia Urologiae Europaeae”. The congress gift of this year is written by Dr. Marlene Fernandez “Joaquin Albarran”. Moreover the History Office continues to work on the research project “Urology under the Swastika”, which is expected to be finalized in 2015.

PublicationsThe former Editor-in-Chief Franceso Montorsi, current Editor-in-Chief-Elect James Catto and the entire editorial team achieve all credits for letting European Urology to become the top ranking Journal in the field of Urology and all general Surgical Journals with an Impact Factor of 10.476. European Urology is also active and growing on Facebook and Twitter and has an iPad application available. Additionally the website is updated (www.europeanurology.com) and there is a dedicated Surgery in Motion Platform.


Prof. Wirth expresses his gratitude to Prof. Francesco Montorsi for his achievements over the last years.

European Urology Today offers 5 issues per year and is mailed out to members.Next to this EUT offers 3 issues at the Annual EAU Congress. This Congress News edition is produced on-site by the EAU Communication Office.

With regard to online communication EAU offers the EAU website www.uroweb.org with the latest information on EAU activities such as daily updates, Education Online, CME-accredited education online and the EAU Guidelines. In 2014 the website will be re-designed.

The EAU Congress website has a new design and contains webcasts, news, interviews and videos from the congress. For the second year there is a Congress app available – for iPhone and Android - that includes a personal planner that makes it possible to organize your personal congress schedule.

The weekly “EAU newsletter” provides updates on all EAU news and announcements in one format. The digital newsletter is provided to all EAU members and relations by e-mail. Subscription management is done via the Uroweb and all members are urged to contribute to the newsletter by sending your comments and/or suggestions to [email protected].

The Patient Information project is extended and now offers 3 new topics: BPE, OAB and Nocturia. Information about Kidney Cancer is due to be launched in June 2014. The project is supported by a website and printable hand-outs in 11 languages. Involved in the development are 9 national societies, EAUN, EAU Sections and the EAU Young Urologists Office.

Scientific Congress OfficeThe Scientific Congress Office – chaired by Arnulf Stenzl – received a record number of abstract submissions this year, in fact more than 4000 abstracts were sent.The format of the meeting has not been changed; a few sessions were added this year.Prof. Artibani thanks Arnulf Stenzl and the members of the Scientific Committee on their excellent work.

These Section should be considered as the backbone of the EAU and cover all fields of Urology and they are increasingly more active. This year one of the aims was and will be the integration of the Young Academic Urologists. This means that the chairs of the YAU working groups will become Ex-Officio members of the Board of the respective Section and the members of the YAU working group will become Associate members. The new working groups of young urologists in each Section will allow them to promote themselves in that given Section and eventually become a Board member. Another advantage coming with the integration of the Young Academic Urologists into the Sections is to have live databases that can be improved and regularly updated.

Regional OfficeThe Regional Office – under the leadership of Bob Djavan – complies with the mission statement to engage, organize and supervise meetings in specific European Regions in order to offer a scientific/clinical/research platform. The Office has been very active in organizing its meetings:


In 2013 the Office organized the 13th Central European Meeting (CEM) in Prague, Czech Republic 4-6 October 2013 (248 participants) and the 9th South Eastern European Meeting (SEEM) in Thessaloniki, Greece 1-3 November 2013 (436 participants).

For 2014 the EAU Baltic Meeting, Vilnius, Lithuania, 23-25 May 2014, the14th Central European Meeting (CEM) in Cracow, Poland, 10-12 October 2014 and the 10th South Eastern Meeting (SEEM), Belgrade, Serbia, 24-26 October 2014 are scheduled.

In 2013 the format was improved by introducing Hands-on training, an ESU course, the Country scientific competition, young urologists debates, round tables. Format is very well received and further improved for 2014: Poster session at the EAU congress; Award winners to be considered as challengers for Davos meeting.

The future activities are:• More collaboration with various EAU offices: IRO, Scientific office, EUSP, Research

foundation, Sections and ESU• Explore the needs in other European regions• Important to attract young urologists to present and share their findings• To offer ‘primary’ exposure• To identify young promising urologists and future KOLs and leaders

5 .3 Prof . Van Poppel reports on the Offices related to Education being: - Education Office - EU-ACME Office - EUSP Office - Guidelines Office - Young Urologists Office

Education OfficeThe Education Office (ESU) – chaired by Joan Palou - has been very active organizing 14 ESU courses at National Society Meetings in 2013 as well as 2 major ESU Masterclasses:- ESU-Weill Cornell Masterclass in General Urology, Salzburg (A)- 6th ESU Masterclass on Female and Functional Reconstructive Urology, Berlin (D)

Additionally the ESU organized the 22nd European Urology Forum in Davos (CH), the ESU teaching courses on Medical Oncology on Genitourinary Cancer, Marseille (FR) and the 11th European Urology Residents Education Programme (EUREP) in Prague (CZ). In China ESU organized the Chinese Urology Education Programme (CUEP) in Beijing (CH) again.

During the 28th Annual EAU Congress in Milan (I) the ESU was involved in organizing 39 ESU courses, 23 Hands-on-training courses, E-BLUS exams, 2 ESU courses at the EAUN meeting and the Education & Innovation booth.


For 2014 the Office already planned 12 courses at National Societies and several Masterclasses: ESU-Weill Cornell Masterclass in General Urology, Salzburg (CH), the 7th ESU-ESFU Masterclass on Female Functional Reconstructive Urology, Berlin (D) and the 1st ESU Masterclass on Lasers in Urology, Barcelona (E)

During the 29th Annual EAU Congress in Stockholm (S) the ESU organized 41 ESU courses, Hands-on-training sessions on LAP, URS, Bipolar TURP, Robotic surgery, Urodynamics, Green light laser, Women’s Health, E-BLUS exams, 2 ESU courses at the EAUN meeting and the Education & Innovation booth.

Also scheduled for 2014 are:• 22nd European Urology Forum, Davos (CH)• 12th European Urology Residents Education Programme (EUREP), Prague (CZ)• 5 ESU-ERUS courses at ERUS meeting, Amsterdam (NL)• 3 ESU-ESAU courses at the 8th Congress of the European Academy of Andrology,

Barcelona (ES)• 5th ESU-Asian School of Urology, Hong Kong (HK)• Chinese Urology Education Programme (CEUEP), Beijing (CN)• CUA-EAU programme on LUTS and Oncology, Beijing (CN)• 1st Confederación Americana de Urologia Residents Education Programme

(CAUREP), Punta del Este (UY)

The ESU organizes ESU hands-on-training programmes, onsite workshops as well as ESU Education online, E-BLUS/ E-BRUS training in Basic Laparoscopic and Robotic Urologic Surgery for residents and urologists who wants to master the basic skills in laparoscopy required for the OR. Needless to say that all ESU activities are accredited within the EU-ACME programme by the EBU/EU-ACME.

EU-ACME OfficeThe EU-ACME Office is chaired by Rien Nijman. As per 2013 there are 15.964 EU-ACME members, 18 national urological societies have joined as well as 3 international urological societies.

Future activities include to increase the awareness for the services of the EU-ACME office, to sustain the cooperation with the national urological associations which are already participating in the programme and to promote the programme amongst national urological associations not yet participating, further promotion of the CME online (MCQs), work on data exchange between EU-ACME and national CME/CPD databases and finally the continuingly development of the ‘EAU Knowledge Base’, the joint venture between the EBU and the EAU.


EUSP OfficeThe EUSP Office – lead by Vincenzo Mirone – offers 5 different types of Scholarships: the Short Visits (SV) of which 3 applications have been approved in 2013, the Clinical Visit (CV) of which 26 applications have been approved in 2013, the Clinical Scholarship of which unfortunately no applications were received in 2013, the Lab Scholarship of which 4 Scholarship were accepted in 2013 and the Visiting Professor (ViPP), of which 2 applications were awarded in 2013.

In 2013 the EUSP Office started to enlist accredited host centers and a new interactive EUSP was launched.

The main objectives for 2014 are to update the relevance and effectiveness of the offered Scholarships, to update the list of accredited host centers (compiled from EAU Sections, EBU centers & centers that participated in the programme over the past 5 years), to offer a more user-friendly online application & review procedure, to increase awareness for the EUSP programme and to increase interaction and exchange with the YUO, EUREP & ESU courses and the National Societies.

Guidelines OfficeThe Guidelines Office is under the guidance of Keith Parsons. The Secretary General expresses his gratitude to Prof. Parsons for his excellent work as he steps down from the Board. After serving the Guidelines Office Board for 6 years as chairmen and for 17 years as an EAU board member.

The office is continuously working on methodological upgrades and modifications to the Web App. Additionally the office is working on the training of further cohort of Guidelines Associates and next to this on the development of unified imaging nomenclature. The EAU Guidelines Office collaborates with the Young Academic Urologists and with the EU editors with regards to reporting of complications.

Initiated and for further development are discussions with the Oxford Centre for EBM, to expand stakeholder involvement, assessment of Guideline use; inclusion of Key Quality Indicators and to improve the use of IT options and dissemination tools.

The office developed new Guidelines on Priapism and assessment of Male LUTS. Updates were written for :• Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer• Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Tumours • Muscle-Invasive & Metastatic Bladder Cancer• Renal Cell Carcinoma • Prostate Cancer• Penile Cancer• Non-neurogenic Male LUTS

Young Urologists OfficeThe YUO – represented by Michiel Sedelaar, elected to become the chair of this office - is renewed and rejuvenated and represents the specific educational and training needs of residents and young urologists starting their career. The target groups of the YUO are the students, the residents (ESRU), young urologists (< age 40 yr. a/o within 5 yr. of finishing residency) and the young academic urologists (YAU).

The office surveyed the possible role of the YUO within the EAU. They survey received 800 replies and 88,7% of the questioned participants agreed that the YUO is needed. Other important outcomes were the need for basic training (anatomy, small surgery, physiology), the need for development of soft skills (leadership, management, business administration, presentations, writing etc), around 30% of the questioned participants was not aware of the educational programmes the EAU offers (EUSP/ESU/ online education). This was a surprising outcome. Other points deriving from the survey were regarding the expectations of the YUO; access to education, personal development and a voice within the EAU.

The current ESRU activities consists of:• Survey about urology education in Europe (yearly)• Mentoring programme• Exchange programme: hospitality club• Active in organization of Residents Day at the EAU, active partnership with the

Regional Office and the EUSP

The current activities of the YAU – chaired by Francesco Sangedolce – are:• 9 working groups covering various diseases• Active in publications (posters, manuscripts, oral presentations)• Grant applications• Databases: many groups will contact the Research Foundation• Guidelines/Knowledge base/Section Office/Patient Information etc.• Academic future of the EAU


Future plans of the Young Urologists Office entail increasing website/Facebook/communication, include the increased access of young talent within the EAU (any level) as well as the consolidation of the existing cooperations with the Regional Office (CEM/SEEM/Baltic), Section Office, Guidelines Office, ESU & EUSP. (Next to this the Office is looking to develop a soft-skill programs and further development of joint interaction with AUA, SIU, Japan, Australia, Canada, South America en iTRUST.)

5 .4 Prof . Abrahamsson reports on the Offices related to Governance being: - Strategy Planning Office - International Relations Office - Membership Office

Strategy Planning OfficeThe Strategy Planning Office – under the guidance of Prof. Didier Jacqmin – aims - amongst others - to increase EAU visibility and ensure that the EAU is recognised as key partner for any urology-related activities within a European Union setting.

EAU as a partner of the European Alliance for Personalized Medicine (EAPM) where D. Jacqmin is a Board member (treasurer) we will attend these upcoming events as part of the ongoing activities of the SPO:

• Roundtable event at European Parliament 2013 – Sept. 25th• Roundtable event at European Parliament 2013 – Oct. 15th• (publication of paper “Forgotten cancers: the case for bladder cancer” undersigned

by EU members of Parliament)• Development of policies for key topics (Roadmaps), involving SPO members and EAU

officials - 2014• EAU presence at the Presidency meeting in Sept. 2014 (attended by Prof. Jacqmin

and Prof. Abrahamsson.• Develop lobby for Horizon 2020 – EU Framework Programme for Research and

Innovation.

In the afore mentioned framework - the aim of the EAU – it is mentioned that EAU is full member of the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) where Prof. Dr. P-A. Abrahamsson was recently elected as ECCO Board member. EAU aims to be a partner for patient organizations as we already are for EUROPA UOMO.

Other developments are revisiting the traditional advisory role of the SPO in view of the current focus on European Union activities. A brainstorming meeting is scheduled with the EAU Board and the Executive Committee by the end of June to revisit the future plans of this office.


International Relations OfficeThe International Relations Office – chaired by Chris Chapple – emphasizes that our core business is in Europe and in order to further develop our close collaboration with European national societies a network of EAU Liaisons has been established by European national societies. A National Societies meeting in Noordwijk is planned In Noordwijk (NL) in June. The Office has continued to strengthen its collaborative links with countries beyond Europe and will continue the exchange programmes with Canada, USA and China.Like in previous years the EAU contributes to meetings of National Societies both in- and outside Europe by giving lectures, organizing joint scientific sessions, promoting and supporting exchange programmes and establishing membership contracts. Together with SIU and AUA we initiated a philanthropic mission in Africa and we will continue to develop that further under the umbrella of the EAU.

The total number of EAU members in February 2014 is 12.474. This numbers should have been somewhat higher, but the EAU has been more strict in maintaining the membership policies; when one has not paid his/her fee, he/she is deleted form the membership list.

6 . Approval of the election of Secretary General Elect, Prof . C . Chapple, Sheffield (UK)

Prof. Abrahamsson refers to the GA of Vienna where the GA approved the changes in the EAU Bylaws one of which allowed EAU members to apply for open EAU Board job positions. The Search & Nomination Committee received quite a number of applications for the different positions opening up and all applications were reviewed and applicants were interviewed. The SNC has nominated the persons as mentioned in the GA Booklet (this information was - according to the Bylaws - also provided to the EAU members before the meeting.)

With a majority of votes the General Assembly approves the election of the Secretary General Elect: Prof. C. Chapple from Sheffield, UK.

Presentation by Peter Mulders on the EAU Research Foundation

EAU Research Foundation is the place where clinical sciences and laboratory sciences meet in an attempt to come to an efficient and innovative trial design and that will automatically lead to a better trial management. The EAU Research Foundation is working in a number of sub-committees.

The Clinical Committee performs urology trials in Europe with significant impact:

Running Projects are:1) ZEUS; report at annual EAU Congress in Milan, 2013. An article with the final

analysis is published in European Urology. Further analyses of the ZEUS database will probably be extended by a young academic urologist and / or an EUSP Fellowship (same for Evolution database, see below).

2) MAGNOLIA; recruiting could possibly be stopped due to the disappointing outcome in Phase III Lung and melanoma studies with MAGE-A3.

3) NMIBC reduced frequency of BCG instillations: recruitment of patients in Germany is on-hold due to delivery problems BCG. In the Netherlands the study is approved. Ongoing are the start-up of UK and Spain and the Sub studies.

New Proposed Projects are:4) TAK-700 versus TAK-700 + Dutasteride in CRPC: The development programme was

stopped.5) MDV3100 in PSA recurrence after local therapy PCA. This EAU RF study design will

be used for a Medivation designed trial

A new investigator initiated non-oncology trial is needed and under evaluation.


The Registry committee initiates relevant registries in all urology disease area’s that will have impact on treatment decisions.

Running Project:The BPH – GSK: Evolution study is now in matured and the report is being finalised. Later in 2014 the final analyses will be ready.

New Project and requested Grant applications:

for HORIZON 2020:• ECLIPSE (Vocal therapy Registry in PCa)• LUTS (a registry from James N’Dow)

Marie Curie Foundation:• TRIBUTE ( Training network for Regeneration in Bladders & Urological Tissue

Engineering). • Enable iT ( European training Network for Ageing Bladder Research Excellence in

Training) The Basic Science Committee promotes translational research for urologists from bench to bedside. The Database for urology translational research centres now contains 23 European urology basic research centres. The Basic Science Committee grant applications for a 3 year career development post-doctoral position in Urological Research for PhD is successful and is now ongoing for the second year, there is a request for extending the programme. The Committee is working actively in collaboration with clinical trials division on projects and side studies. Side studies are the markers in MIBC, NMIBC and CRPC in the EAU RF trials mentioned before.

The Database Management System, which is internally developed (CuraDOC) cannot be validated. It was decided to use of an external database system. The aim is to expand investigator initiated oncology and non-oncology urological clinical trials and registries.

The EAU Research Foundation will extend its presence more in the existing EAU communication skills.


10. Future Congresses: The next congress will be the 30th EAU Annual Congress in Madrid from 20-24 March 2015.

Meet the nomineesFor the position of Adjunct Secretary General - ScienceProf. Francesco Montorsi, Milan (IT)

Francesco Montorsi has worked in senior positions within the EAU for a number of years, serving both as Adjunct Secretary General responsible for Communications and after that as Editor-in-Chief of European Urology. He currently holds the position of Professor

and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Vita e Salute University in Milan and he was recently appointed Chief Scientific Officer of the Scientific Institute Hospital San Raffaele.

Prof Montorsi’s main areas of scientific interest include pathophysiology and management of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia, sexual dysfunctions and genitourinary oncology. He has co-authored over 800 papers on a large variety of topics in many prestigious journals. During his eight-year tenure, the impact factor of European Urology increased from 3.542 to 12.480, making it the most widely read scientific journal for any surgical specialty. His accomplishments as Editor-in-Chief and his academic career make Prof. Montorsi the best possible candidate for this position in the EAU Executive.
