“We are a diverse faith-community that strives to conform ourselves into the

image of Christ in and through the power of the Holy Spirit, and

nourished by The Word, Sacraments and Tradition to give glory to God

and to be a light unto the nations.”

"For they preach but they do

not practice." The scribes

and Pharisees may be the

ones Jesus was speaking

about in today's Gospel, but

we must be careful not to

dismiss his words when it

comes to our own actions.

Jesus offered a difficult chal-

lenge to those honor-seekers that we must also heed when

he said, "The greatest among you must be your servant." This

is not the way the world usually works. Generally speaking,

the idea of being a servant is considered inferior to being

someone who has risen to high levels of leadership or status.

But Jesus wants people in positions of authority to selflessly

serve those over whom they have influence. And he insists

that the leaders who establish laws, rules, and guidelines do

not excuse themselves from following their own directives!

"Practice what you preach," as the saying goes.

Whether or not we have extensive public influence, almost

all of us at certain points are in a position to exercise leader-

ship--with our children and families, with classmates, cowork-

ers, neighbors, friends, and sometimes strangers. When these

moments arise, we are called to step into this role without

being hypocrites. It's important to be sure we don't issue un-

realistic demands on others that we ourselves would find it

burdensome or even impossible to fulfill. This requires the vir-

tue of humility. Instead of reveling in the authority we may

have at any given moment, instead of creating "heavy bur-

dens hard to carry and lay[ing] them on people's shoulders,"

we need to be ready and willing to walk a mile in their shoes,

and lead accordingly. And Jesus tells us clearly that this serv-

ant leadership will be rewarded, for "whoever humbles him-

self will be exalted."

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY 2017-2018 SCHOOL STUDENT NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

The school, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students regardless of race, color, national origin, and/or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, medical condition, sex, or national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies and practices, scholarship programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs, although certain athletic leagues and other programs may limit participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single-sex schools. While the school does not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them. Decisions concerning the admission and contin-ued enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the student's emotional, academic, and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the student's needs.
