By John Hernandez It’s time to get out those walking shoes. The inaugural “Todd Walk 2011” event is this Saturday, March 5, at the Gardner Middle School track. The event is to provide money for a scholarship in memory of Todd Myers who died last year of colon cancer. Todd was a San Manuel graduate class of 1991. The scholarship was his idea as he wanted to give back to the community that had helped him and his wife Jamie with medical bills and support during their time of need. Jamie is seeing that his dream comes true. She has set up the scholarship fund with

the Mammoth-San Manuel Education Foundation. She and her friends have been busy organizing the fi rst of what they hope will be an annual event to benefi t graduates of San Manuel High School. A Facebook page has been set up. It is at www.facebook.com/toddmyersbenefitpage. They are looking for a catchier, more fun, more touching name for the event. Suggestions can be posted on the Facebook page or at the suggestion box which will be at the event. Todd Walk 2011 will begin at the 8:30 a.m. pre-registration. The walk will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or anytime in between. It will be followed

by a lunch consisting of a hamburger, hot dog, chips and a drink. The lunch is included in the registration fee which is $5 for students and $10 for adults. There will be t-shirts for sale for $12 or one is free with a $50 donation. The shirts were designed and made by Chris at Miner Creations. You can also pledge an amount for each lap someone walks or donate any amount you wish even if you don’t want to walk. Todd was a musician and played guitar and sang with the Up the Creek Band and Haywire. He even got to play at Country Thunder. Mark Harrington of the Haywire band will be the DJ on

Saturday. He will be playing all types of music including oldies, country rock to modern and will probably be playing some of Todd’s music that he recorded with the bands. Volunteers will be painting kids’ faces. The temperature should be in the 70s so it should be fun for everyone. The Tri-Community is responding well to the benefi t walk. There are 49 walkers so far and the business community is generous as always. Businesses that have signed up as sponsors of the Todd Walk 2011 include San Manuel Hair & Nails, Dale’s Auto Collision Center, Oracle Electric, LLC., Todd Myers doing what he loved to do – playing music,

Folks from across the Copper Corridor - from Superior to SaddleBrooke - woke Sunday morning to a confectioner’s sugar dusting of white snow. It was cold and wet ... but it was sure pretty! Some kids headed out for some snowman making while photographers from the Miner-Sun-Basin headed out for some photos. We took photos in Kearny of Teapot Mountain and in Superior of Picket Post; downtown Superior and some wonderful photos of Devil’s Canyon; San Manuel got some snow and the Galiuro Mountains were just glistening with all the snow left on those peaks. Helping out a great cause ...

Pinal County Attorney James Walsh presented a check for $2,500 to Tom Miller of the San Manuel Elks for the annual Graduation Night Party. Miller said that since the program’s inception, not a single teen has died on graduation night. Other communities in Pinal County have begun programs based on this successful program. The funds donated by the Pinal County Attorney’s Offi ce come from money and property seized from drug dealers and other criminals. Thomas David Madrid went home to Jesus unexpectedly on February 21, 2011. He graduated with the class of 2000, from San Manuel High School continuing his education at the University of Arizona, to graduate, in 2007, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health. He worked for SonoraQuest Labs for the last six years. Having started working in the lab in Tucson, he worked most recently in the Marketing and Sales department in Tempe. He was so enthusiastic about his work, and all that he was learning from his many friends and mentors within the company. Like everything he did, he put his whole heart into it. Tommy enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He never saw a stranger. Each and every family member and friend was so precious to him. He was so thoughtful and generous, and, loved giving gifts to everyone he cared about. The most amazing gift he gave was himself. If Tommy cared about someone, they knew it. The fi rst thing anyone could say about him is that he always had a smile on his face. He touched so many lives in his short time on earth. He stopped by to enrich our lives, and, now is off to his next adventure. What an

Madelyn Rose Ronquillo, 10, passed away Feb. 23, 2011 at her home in Tucson. The light of our lives extinguished too early will live on in the hearts and memories of everyone lucky enough to be a part of her life. Maddie’s smile and enjoyment of the simple things in life made us appreciate every day. She is survived by a sister, Maria; parents, Cayetano and Deana; aunts, Theresa (Brett) Joiner, Gina (Dominic) Baudoin and Yvette Lacefi eld; grandfathers, Charles Skuhr and Roy Ronquillo; grandmother, Brenda Lacefi eld; cousins, CJ, Luke, and Olivia as well as many extended family members and friends. Evelyne (Lyne) Predgo Martin passed away Feb. 12, 2011, in South Carolina at the age of 52. Her father, Frank Predgo, preceded her in death. She was born in Bronx, New York, and was the daughter of Liliane DeLouisa and stepfather Joseph DeLouisa. She attended school in Paris, France, and, received an accounting degree in Arizona. She was an avid reader, talented, and, charming, with a witty sense of humor. She was a loving daughter, wonderful wife and devoted mother. Lyne leaves behind a husband, Staff Sergeant William Martin; two sons, Robert and William II; and, Alex Ramirez, whom Lyne considered to her third son; two brothers, William (Cheryl) Predgo; and, Joseph DeLouisa; several nephews and nieces; in-laws, Walter and Joyce Casebeer; and, a huge, extended family. A Memorial service was held Friday, Feb. 18 in the chapel at Kornegay Moseley Funeral Home & Cremation. A second memorial was held in Tucson on Feb. 26 at Silver Bell at 12 p.m. In lieu of fl owers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Editor, San Manuel Miner: With banners fl ying, and, drums beating, there’s a groundswell of support for “open space” reads the front page of the Miner, for Dec. 22. “Boatloads of forums” demanding a “redo” of the Comprehensive Gosplan says County Commisar for “Managing for Results” (whatever that is). Our very identity is at stake, who we are, echoes President S. Smith. (Who elected her anyway?) Wow! And, all this from only 130 civic-minded citizens of Pinal County. That’s .0003 percent of the population. In the late 1990s, something similar took place in Pima County. A toxic brew of county apparatchiks and environmentalists managed to sell the public a bill of goods, which allowed them to acquire huge swaths of private land (at taxpayer expense, of course) almost in perpetuity. Pima County has one of the highest property tax rates in Arizona. Surprised? Not to worry. If the tax payer balks at paying for all this empty land, they’ll just force the evil developers to hand over 30 percent of their land, before being

permitted to build on their own property. You don’t need an MBA from Harvard to see who will ultimately pay for this “donation” in the form of new house prices infl ated by 30 percent. A friend of mine who appraises homes showed me a color-coded map of Arizona. “What are the little white areas?” I inquired. They appeared as small islands surrounded by an ocean. He informed me that those areas were private land. Everything else was either Indian land, or, land held by some government entity. This represented almost 80 percent of the land in Arizona!! The government’s appetite is insatiable. Not long after the current administration in Washington began to swallow up one part of the private economy after another, the Wall Street Journal mused “is there nothing these people don’t want to control?” Open Spaces… such an innocuous sounding phrase. Editor, San Manuel Miner: I would like to bring to the attention of the residents of Mammoth something that I don’t think they all know but would be surprised about if they knew it was happening. I have been to a number of the Town Council meetings, where three council members have berated, disrespected, and, beat down Town staff, to the point that I have left crying, and/or, angry, at times. Why Managers Abuse (or, in this case, Council Members): There are two reasons why managers choose to abuse subordinates. One is the normative source, which comes from pressure by other managers to abuse. The other is from the internal source that is from the past abuse they have experienced, and, they now have an opportunity to offload their own pain onto others. This is attributed to childhood shaming experiences suffered by the manager that continues to manifest through school and into adulthood. So, when they move into their position of power, they have an opportunity to unload their shame on other people. When children attend these meetings, they are shown, by authority, that it is okay to be a bully! In case the residents are unaware, a long-time employee, Juan Ponce, has taken an early retirement and the Police Chief, of six months, has already quit. This has left the town very shorthanded and additional responsibilities have been put on the Town Clerk, Rachael Sanchez, who acts, per Town policy, in absence of a Town Manager. At last Thursday’s meeting, Sanchez was berated by Councilman Al Barcelo, who also reminded her that she is not the Town Manager, before Vice Mayor Frances Wickham and Councilman Rudy Romo put in their two cents. Come on! Who do they think they are, putting down another human being in this manner? This should be handled as a personnel issue and done in private. How uncomfortable do you think this made Ms. Sanchez feel? I thought she was very strong during this and all other attacks on her. I have seen tremendous changes in the town since Ms. Sanchez has been Town Clerk. I also read in the paper a month or so

Why do they allow bullying in Mammoth?ago the great number of grants she has gotten for the town. Have they ever thanked her for all the work she has done, getting and implementing these grants? I have been at other meetings and it has been brought back

to me by family members who have attended meetings and this goes on all the time. The Mayor does put a stop to it and/or defends the staff, when appropriate; but, at last Thursday’s meeting, the Mayor was absent and

the three council members mentioned above really laid into Rachael. I would really like the rest of the residents to attend these meetings and see how the Town staff is being treated. Pretty soon, we will not have

anyone working for us, if this continues. No one should be put under this much stress in their job. Town employees don’t make enough money to put up with this! I do want to thank the remaining council members

for their professionalism, and, respect they show for the town and its staff. I’m not sure what the trio is trying to do; all I can think of is that they are trying to make our town the laughingstock of Arizona./s/ Patricia Johnson

TUCSON - The Arizona Department of Transportation will repave more than three miles of State Route 77 just north of Catalina beginning Monday (March 7). A layer of the existing pavement will be removed and replaced with a new layer of smooth, quiet rubberized asphalt between Eagle Crest Ranch Drive and just east of the Oracle Junction/State Route 79 turnoff. What to expect during construction: • Crews will work daytime hours from dawn until dusk, Monday through Friday each week. • There will be at least one

lane open in each direction of traffic through the project area at all times until the project is completed. • Signage will direct motorists through the work zone. • The project is scheduled to be completed early this summer. While the lane restrictions are in effect, drivers from the communities of SaddleBrooke, SaddleBrooke Ranch, Florence, Oracle, Mammoth, San Manuel, Winkelman, Hayden, Kearny and Globe should allow extra time for travel to and from Tucson. As always, drivers are reminded to proceed through the work zone with caution,

Arizona Department of Public Safety Sergeant Vern Havens presented the Officer of the Year Award to Bruce Fletcher, an officer who started his law enforcement career in 1985 when Vern was in the seventh grade and gas was $1.69 a gallon. “I am truly blessed to have him on my squad,” Havens said. Havens estimated that Fletcher has made more than 20,000 traffic stops in his 25 years in DPS. Fletcher received a standing ovation from those in attendance at the banquet. (Jennifer Carnes photo)

Pinal County Deputy Douglas Peobles was named Deputy of the Year by Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, who called Peobles “one of the finest.” The Sheriff talked of a recent incident where a suspect had barricaded himself in his trailer and then set fire to the trailer. Deputy Peobles didn’t hesitate to go into the trailer to rescue the suspect, sustaining some minor burns in the process. “He’s hard-charging,” the Sheriff added. “He does his job.” (Jennifer Carnes photo)

Tri-City Med Paramedic Anka Mischel was honored as Paramedic of the Year and was presented her award by Brian Osterban. Osterban said that Mischel had originally started as a part-time dispatcher who had “come out of the dark” and into the field. She is a full time teacher in the Vail School District, teaching band and steel drums. She was named EMT/Paramedic of the Year for 2001 by Southwest Ambuance and has been nominated for Teacher of the Year at Vail. (Jennifer Carnes photo)

Lieutenant Jeff Osborn has been named Firefighter of the Year for Oracle Fire Department. Fire Chief Albert Ortiz presented the award. Ortiz told those in attendance that Osborn handled much of the electrical needs around the department as well as managing the department’s brush burn and fire hydrant maintenance. “Jeff,” he said, “has become a mentor” to the younger members of the department, teaching them how to respect the public when they come into contact with them. “We need to respond and make their day better,” Ortiz said. Cougars were forced to practice in the gym due to a wet and muddy field caused by the snow that fell in Oracle on Sunday. The boys used the grass covered football field for their

practice. They play a 10 game schedule beginning this week. Both the boys’ team and the Lady Cougars play on the same day and time. Games begin at 4 p.m.

The Cougar teams will face Ray today in Kearny. They will be on the road again Monday for games against Eloy. Wednesday, March 9, they will be at home against San Carlos.

Six swimmers, who have competed as members or the San Manuel Sea Lions Swim Team, competed in Southern Arizona Regional Swim Meet Feb. 25-27 in Oro Valley for USA Swimming. Teams from Southern Arizona including Yuma and Phoenix participated in the meet. Swimmers took whatever the weather gave them including some snow flurries on Sunday and swam some very fast times.Will Newman (11) participated in 12 events and won eight of them. Newman won the 50 Butterfly, 200 Free, 100 Backstroke and 200 Individual Medley. He swims with Fast Swim Club in Oro Valley and was part of four winning relay teams: 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, 400 Medley Relay, and 400

Local swimmers compete at Southern Arizona Regional MeetFree Relay. Newman finished second in the 50 Backstroke, 200 Backstroke, and 500 Free and finished third in the 100 IM. Newman will compete in the Arizona Age Group State Championship Swim Meet to be held March 10-13, 2011 at the Phoenix Swim Club in Phoenix. Parker Gray (15) participated in six events winning four of them. Parker won the 200 Individual Medley, 100 Free, 200 Breaststroke, and the 400 Individual Medley. Parker finished second in the 200 Free and third in the 1000 Free. Parker swims with the TTAC swim Club at the NW YMCA. Blaine Mulholland (17) won the 50 Freestyle and took second

in the 200 Breaststroke. Tim Mulholland (14) finished fifth in the 100 Breaststroke and sixth in the 100 free. Meghan Cook (15) finished third in the 100 Free and fifth in the 100 Breaststroke. Blaine, Tim and Meghan swim for Pusch Ridge Swim Club in Oro Valley. Maya Gort (17) won the 200 Free and finished second in the 200 Butterfly and 200 IM. Maya also finished third in the 200 Backstroke and the 1650 Free. She finished fourth in the 100 Breaststroke. Maya swims for Fast Swim Club in Oro Valley. Parker, Blaine and Maya will be competing at the Arizona Senior State Championship Meet to be held March 3-6 in Goodyear.

Fifty years ago, Ed and Vivian Valenzuela were a young couple, starting out their life together, with their engagement and wedding photos published in the San Manuel Miner. On Dec. 4, 2010, the happy couple celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary, with

family and friends, at the San Manuel American Legion Hall Relatives from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oklahoma, and Tennessee attended, as did many others. Six of the original eight from the 1960 wedding party’s bridesmaids/groomsmen were contacted, with five being able to attend.

Ed has been part of the San Manuel community since 1954, Vivian since 1957. They were high school sweethearts; Ed graduated in 1959 and Vivian graduated in 1960, from San Manuel High School. They were married at St. Bartholomew’s Church in San Manuel, December 3, 1960. They made their home here and have been here ever since. After graduating from high school, Ed got a job at Magma Copper Company. He worked there for 40 years and, later, went to Central Arizona College – Aravaipa Campus, earning his Associates Degree. He then taught electricity-math part-time, at Aravaipa. Vivian chose to be a stay-at-home mom, active in

church, and, in later years, did volunteer service at Catalina Mountain Detention Center for 13 years. Through the years, they had four children: Rebecca, Regina, Virginia, and Eddie Samuel. At present, they have 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren with one more due any day now. They want to thank their children, family, close friends, and members of the original wedding party for their presence and contributions toward making their celebration a very memorable one. Now in retirement, they look to the future together with the Lord Jesus Christ, to whom they committed their marriage 50 years ago.

The Early Child Development Screening will be held in San Manuel on Tuesday, March 15, at the school district’s auditorum. The screenings will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. Children currently enrolled in the district’s preschool programs or Head Start programs have already participated in screening and do not need to attend. Enrollment information for the school year 2011-2012 for the First Avenue Elementary preschools will be available. The early child development screening is purely voluntary. Interested parents should call Carrie at First Avenue Elementary 385-4341 to schedule a time for their child to be screened. Walk in appointments during the screening are also welcome. Parents who are concerned about their children who are 5-21 years old should contact the Adaptive Education Office to schedule an evaluation (520) 385-2337 ext. 105. The Mammoth – San Manuel School District and the Arizona Early Intervention Program (AzEIP) will provide a free child development screening to any child living in the school district who is under the age of five (but not eligible for kindgergarten in the fall of 2011). The school district and AzEIP are very committed to early childhood developmental interventions because research has shown that from birth to age five is a very critical period of learning for children. Early identification of delays in development and early educational interventions has been shown to have long lasting impact for improving the lives of children. The school district’s Early Child Development Team will conduct the screenings for the children between the ages 2 years-10 months and 4 years old. The Early Child Development Team is made up of preschool teachers, a speech pathologist, a school nurse, and a school psychologist. An Early Intervention Specialist from AzEIP will provide the screenings on any child who is between the ages of Birth and 2 year 9 months old. AzEIP is a statewide system of supports and services for families with children who are between birth and 3 years old. All children taking part in the developmental screening will be observed for the following developmental skills: hearing and vision; muscle coordination;
