Good friends and tenacious competitors, Ben and Jerry have been a significant part of the rejuvenation of Kamiak distance running. Their year-round training has been a model for younger competitors entering the program. This season they have lead the team with their love of cross country and drive that propelled the team to the State Championship meet. Reliable, conscientious and focused they have earned the respect of their teammates, competitors and coaches for the past four seasons. Both will be leaders of the track team this spring with plans to run next year wherever they attend college.

It may have come as a surprise to her, but for those watching

Mariner sophomore Brianna Lucien swim throughout the season knew she was destined for great things at the 4A state swimming championships last weekend.

Lucien, the only swimmer at state on Nov. 16 for the Maraud-ers, won the state title in the 500 freestyle race, beating the second place fi nisher by six seconds.

“It feels amazing,” she said after the medal ceremony. “I wasn’t expecting it and I’m just overwhelmed.”

Lucien, who also won the district title in the event, saw her time drop throughout the season, inching closer to the fi ve-minute mark.

“It’s great to fi nally be able to go close to fi ve minutes and throughout the season get

closer and closer,” she said. “It feels so good.”

Lucien came into the fi nals on Saturday as the fastest qual-ifi er and won the title with a time of 5:04.46. Newport’s Mag-gie Pana, who kept pace with Lucien for much of the race until the fi nal laps, fi nished in second in 5:10.45.

“In my head I was telling myself ‘Oh my gosh, I might be able to win this if I just keep going my pace,’” she said.

Lucien also fi nished in third place in the 200 freestyle event with a 1:55.06 time. Her coach, Jennifer Angelos, said she wasn’t worried about Lucien’s swim in the 200 affecting her 500 time.

“She just needed to go swim her race,” her coach said. “I wasn’t worried, she had a good day.”

The Kamiak girls team also traveled to the meet, fi nishing in 12th place as a team with 69 points.

“They did really well,” said Kamiak head coach Chris Er-ickson. “I think they worked hard and reaped some great rewards.”

Ingrid Straume fi nished the 200 freestyle race in 15th place for the Knights, earning a fi nals time of 2:03.09. Laura Johnson fi nished the 200 free-style in seventh place for the Knights with a time of 58.93.

Johnson also fi nished in sixth place in the 100 backstroke race, fi nishing in 58.14 seconds. Kamiak’s Lyndsey Willis fi n-ished the 500 freestyle event in 5:29.24 for 15th place.

Kamiak’s 200 freestyle relay team of Angeline Dovinh, Johnson, Haley Lasley and Straume fi nished in 12th place with a time of 1:42.89.

In the fi nal event of the day, the Knights 400 relay team of Dovinh, Johnson, Willis and Straume took fourth place in 3:40.78.

2 from Kamiak sign on to play NCAA lacrosse

Two students from Kamiak High School and members of the Mukilteo lacrosse program have committed to play college lacrosse.

Jordan Gagnon and Nick Gregory will play in college next year.

Gagnon has committed to play for Illinois Wesleyan Univer-sity, a NCAA Division III school. Gregory will play at Wittenberg University in Ohio, also a DIII school.

This spring’s graduating class includes the most high school lacrosse players from Washing-ton moving on to college teams.
