Hwy 60 at Stone, Superior, AZ

By Mila Lira Last Wednesday afternoon Public Safety Director Lou Digirolamo confirmed that two robberies had occurred in Superior on Wednesday. While both incidents happened on the same day Digirolamo explained that they have no reason to believe the two crimes

are related. The first robbery was at the Circle K on US Highway 60. The robbery occurred at 4:30 a.m. The suspects were armed with a knife. The Superior Police Department was able to quickly arrest some of the suspects in this robbery. The Superior Police

Department apprehended three of the four suspects in the robbery at Circle K. The names of the individuals have not been released, however two of the four suspects are juveniles. The three suspects who were caught the day of the robbery are currently in custody. The SPD is still working on locating the fourth suspect in the armed robbery. The fourth suspect is said to be an adult male. “Once the charges are filed the names and identities of the suspects will be released,” explained Public Safety Director Lou Digirolamo. Later in the afternoon, before 2 p.m., the Bank of the West on Main Street

was also robbed. The suspect in this case used a note to let the teller know that the bank was being robbed. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is involved in this case as banks are a federal institution. The

suspect in this case has not been apprehended and there were no further updates as of press time. Due to the pending investigations the amount of money stolen in each incident cannot be disclosed at this time.

No one was physically harmed in either incident. The Superior Police Department encourages those with information on these crimes to contact the Superior Police Department at 520-689-5254.

Editor, Superior Sun: Are we back to the good ol’ days and double standards? I have been very patient, as many of you, with the new

Mayor and Town Council. I guess it is time for political payback. I notice new people at Town Hall and am very surprised by who is there. I

guess this group is there to justify the recall election that the taxpayers of Superior paid for. I believe the special election cost us over $7,000. The recall election was called because the former Mayor was accused of malfeasance. Has there been any finding that has been found that the former Mayor was directly misappropriating funds? Has there been any charges filed against the former Mayor? My question to the new Mayor is, when you were Vice Mayor, Rita Wentzel was the Town Clerk and finance director, why did you accept her resignation? What did she do wrong? The Town Manager resignation, also: is this position for someone you have to pay back? Now, Ms. Wentzel is in charge of town operations or are you in charge of town operations? You said, in the debate for Mayor’s position, that the former Mayor was not transparent and was micromanaging the town. I talk to some council members, and they don’t even know what is going on until after the fact. However, some of the council members are actually micromanaging the town. Who is in charge? The Council was told that there is a freeze on the current budget because the town was broke; that all expenditures

are to be cleared by the Clerk Rita Wentzel. You have hired new people in administration: is this part of the current budget? It was first rumored that Public Works was hiring new people, also, but, this rumor is now true. Former Council member Veto Cervantes, who lost trying to be a councilman, is now in charge of overseeing the town streets and another hired person is on his way into the department, also. Is Jed Lant the current Public Works Director? Cannot he tell the street workers what to do? There is only a small handful

of street workers and a small handful of inmates. You can count them on your hand. I volunteered for four weeks to get the US 60 Highway park cleaned up, with an inmate crew, and I not only helped oversee the inmates, but, worked side by side with them. I volunteered my time, not receiving one dime for my efforts. We don’t need any more Chiefs; we need more workers. I heard Veto is given a special title for his position. I leave that up to you to find out. Is this move part of the current budget? I guess the current employees did not get their raises as promised if the budget were not healthy. I guess we are not healthy,

because we are hiring new people. What happened to the freeze on the expenditures? Our police department cannot even hire a part time dispatcher. With this high level position for public safety not allowed to be filled, we are filling other positions. Oh, by the way: our high price Police Chief is covering the dispatch shortage. So, if you call the police department for an emergency, you might be talking to the Chief. I guess they can change the budget because the Council still has those high price attorneys that say it is OK. The town has two attorneys that continue to show up at the meetings that taxpayers pay for.

I am not against people working; it is who the Mayor is hiring. All these people have something in common. They are all fully retired people with pensions and social security benefits. They don’t need to work. If the Mayor wants to hire local people, there are a lot of people who need jobs, that are trying to feed their families. Also,, a lot of these new employees and these people are paid by the tax payers and are not volunteers, they signed the recall petition against the former Mayor. I guess it is political payback time. My last question to the Mayor and Council: were all these positions advertised, so

those who are unemployed can apply? Were all these positions are filled with the Mayor’s friends? I have one good thing to say to the Mayor and Council, thank you for allowing the police department to use the new police car. It sat behind the police department, a $50,000 vehicle, for a month, because the town could not afford a $4 license plate. Mr. Mayor, the Retired Miner’s group that were against the Resolution Copper Mine over the Oak Flat gave you support, which included Rita Wentzel and Roy Chavez. You and the Council voted to support the mining operation. You did not even voice big concerns over the

proposed mining operation. I will continue to fight against the mining operation at Oak Flat. We will have no water for our future for our families. The only one who raised any questions about the mine was an 18 year old Councilman. He voted against the support until the questions were answered about the water. More than half of the Council should not have voted for the support letter including you, Mayor, because of the conflict of interest. Your family benefits from the mine moving forward. The Town Council and Planning and Zoning Board have cleared the way for the development of the Magma Hotel to move forward. The Town Council of Superior was unanimous in their support for the

development of Magma Hotel in Superior. The council, working with the recommendations of the Superior Planning and Zoning Board, has approved a Conditional Use Permit for a porch over the town right-of-way, as outlined in the site plan for the renovations to the Magma Hotel. Council also approved variances for a reduction

in the required number of parking spaces and a request to allow first floor guest rooms rooms in the Town Center Zoning District. Archiatrix Designs President Ashish Dandavate addressed the Superior Town Council during a public hearing held Thursday, March 15. Council members and the public in attendance

By John Hernandez Brad Gray, the aircraft archaeologist who appeared in an article in the February 29 issue of the Superior Sun where he was looking for information about a crash site near Superior, is glad to announce that the site has been found. The plane crash happened in 1954 and involved an

Air Force Lockheed T-33 jet plane. Charles Noble, a young Air Cadet was the pilot of the plane and was killed in the crash. Brad said that shortly after the article came out, he received around 20 phone calls or emails with information or leads about the site. One of the Sun’s readers called and recommended that Brad

Latino Network. The dinner was just a part of the events sponsored by the Cesar E. Chavez Memorial Committee of Pinal County to celebrate its commitment to the youth of Pinal County. To open the celebration, Eva’s Fine Mexican Food Restaurant hosted an event in February with a youth mariachi performance. Also held was an art display that captured Chavez’s passion and commitment to his culture at the Casa Grande Public Library that is running throughout the month of March, plus an art contest that invited Pinal County High School students to enter to showcase their artistic talent.

man is fickle and does not always make right or good decisions. A number of years back, a popular gospel singer penned these words: “Jesus is the answer for the world today.” Some might disagree that our physical and economic difficulties could be solved by a spiritual solution. Yet,

Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper . . . ‘for I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future . . . you will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,’ declares the Lord.” God clearly indicates that our success is not found in the abilities of mankind, but in our relationship and communication with the Almighty. The Sixth Annual Community Pride Day set for April 14 in Superiora.m. Things that can be taken are metal (please put in separate pile), tires (limit five per resident), tree and brush clippings in manageable piles (four foot lengths or in bags) and normal household trash, small appliances, furniture, toilets, etc. Sorry, organizers can’t accept concrete, cement, rocks, hazardous waste, paint, oil, batteries, gas tanks or construction materials. This includes things like drywall, flooring, roofing and large amounts of wood. This effort takes loads of volunteers. At least 100 people are needed

to help out. Meet at the swimming pool at 7 a.m. on the 14th. If you have a truck or trailer please bring it along. Potluck lunch at noon. Hot dogs and drinks will be provided by the Town. Lots of door prizes. You may just go home with a treasure. In the past five years, Superiorites have disposed of over 1 MILLION pounds of trash! Let’s keep it going. High Schools campus. Guzman says it was a win/win project for the School District and the community, citing the fact that not one penny of funding was spent from the District M&O (Maintenance and Operations) budget. The project is winding up, and the last phase will be installing three solar

Superior Schools lights up the night with grantspanels. Guzman related the dilemma faced by the SUSD two years ago when high winds took down a set of lights at the Football field. The School Board was informed by their insurance carrier that not only could the downed lights not be repaired, but that the lighting for the entire field was in danger of falling. The insurance carrier required the District to take down all of the lights at the field a a cost of $15,000, which was paid by the Arizona

School Faculty Board and the insurance carrier. Even worse there was no solution or funding to replace the lighting and the district was forced to endure a full year with no lighting on the football field. Going green turned out to be the answer. The Energy Efficiency grant from AMERSCO provided all new energy efficient lighting, new marquee board and a new scoreboard. Even better the grant covered the full cost of the solar powered

and energy efficient lighting. The district will save 20 percent on utility bills – money which will be put back into the M&O budget. The schools now have more lighting at a lower cost overall to the district. Guzman expects $84,000 in utility cost savings to go back into the M&O budget. On April 18, the School Board will hear a presentation on a proposal to install more solar panels to further increase utility savings. Guzman says it is

essential that the public be informed and aware of the fact that this lighting project was entirely grant funded at no cost to the District. He adds that the utility savings is an ongoing benefit. The savings on utility bills will mean those dollars will be directed towards other needs of District in the M&O budget for the long term. “wreck chaser” were able to locate the site approximately two miles southwest of the Reymert Mine. The Reymert Mine was an old silver mine located about seven miles from Superior in the Mineral Mountain area. The ghost towns of Reymert and Denoon are located nearby. The family of Cadet Noble was excited about the crash site being found, however they will not be able to visit the site as it is in very rugged and treacherous country that can only be reached by hiking in or on horseback. The remnants of the crash site were found in a gully. Unfortunately aluminum scrappers have visited the area and much of the debris was taken. “This is very common at crash sites,” Brad said. “In the 60s and early 70s aluminum scrappers would visit the site and smelt down the aluminum parts of the aircraft into ingots and then sell them.” Brad reported that the engine appears to still be at the site although most of it is buried under 60 years of runoff from the mountains. The landing gear and steel parts were still at the site. Brad was able to find a few buttons from Cadet Noble’s uniform and

parachute. He mailed the buttons and a few small pieces of the aircraft to the Nobles along with all the photos taken at the crash scene. Brad would like to thank all of the people who responded to his request for information especially the local rancher who gave him directions to the site. LTD operates an HDS water treatment system that treats water pumped from the old Magma mine in Superior

Arizona. The treated water discharges the plant to a 27 mile

pipe line from Superior west to the New Magma Irrigation

District where it is used to supplement crop irrigation. The incumbent will perform day to day water operation functions required to operate the HDS Water Treatment plant. All

tasks will be performed while supporting the HSE policies,

goals and objectives of Resolution Copper Mining.
