FROM THE INTERIM PASTOR
Riverside Presbyterian has been ministering to neighbors here in Cocoa Beach and around the globe for sixty years. On Sunday, October 2, the congregation will kick off a month-long celebration of the history of the church even as we prepare for the future and all that God is still calling us to be and do. On Sunday, October 2 at 10:00 a.m. the congregation will host a special “Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans” worship service which honors our Presbyterian Scottish heritage. A homecoming reception will follow in Fellowship Hall at 11:30. a.m. Later that same day, at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 2, the Dr. Vernon Boushell Concert Series will present “Gimme That Old Time Religion” featuring Appalachian Gospel Ensemble. The concert is free to the community but tickets are required. Watch for Box Office announcements. Riverside will continue to reach out to the community throughout the month of October with “60 Works for Riverside’s 60th Anniversary.” Members of the Riverside family of faith will be praying, serving, and being a blessing to the community. Be a part of this special outreach. There is much to celebrate in the life of the church. All are invited! Grace and peace,
Pastor Melanie

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
We are proud to announce our partnership with Grandparents Raising Grandchildren of Brevard. This amazing
organization provides resources, legal help, counseling and agency support to grandparents who have found
themselves being the primary caregivers/guardians of their grandchildren.
Over the past two decades, GRG of Brevard has provided services for over 1900 families. Currently, there are
over 8,500 children living in relative care families in Brevard County. GRG of Brevard provides cost-free, com-
munity-based programs and services that include: Weekly therapeutic support groups; Crisis counseling for
relative caregivers; Workshops and educational programs; Advocacy on behalf of caregiver families; Communi-
ty outreach and education; Recreational activities and respite; Emergency resource referrals for food, clothing,
and infant supplies. Many of your neighbors or friends may be in need this support and will be well served by
this new Cocoa Beach group.
Beginning September 13th, Riverside will be a host location for monthly support group meetings. Meetings will
be held the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am. Please keep the families, children and organization in
your prayers.

September in the Kid’s Corner - One Room School House
Miss Vicki and Miss Gail will happily welcome all students, new and old on Sunday,
September 11th at 10:10 a.m. to begin our new study of “Grace and Gratitude” in the
book of Exodus. In Genesis we study the creation story, the Garden of Eden, and
the human responsibility to be caretakers for the earth. Exodus takes us to the sto-
ry of Moses and the basket. We will learn it took five women to save baby Moses.
In the story of Moses and the burning bush, God called Moses by name to become a leader to the people
of Israel. When it was time for the people to leave Egypt, they had to cooperate together to gather need-
ed items. Today, it is the church that can help children to stand up for justice. God also knows our name
and wants us to do his work individually and together. Grace flows from God’s desire and actions to free
people. Then and now, gratitude acknowledges freedom and the responsibilities that come with it includ-
ing living in community with God and neighbor as partners who value freedom and respect for all peo-
ple.
Welcome Back !!!!
Can We Talk? Conversations of Faith
NEW! 5th-8th graders are invited to join Pastor Melanie on the stage in Fellowship Hall
between services for a new class. We’ll be using the “Can We Talk?” PCUSA Study Cate-
chism. All materials supplied. Starts Sunday, Sept 11 at 10:10 a.m.
As we celebrate the “First Sunday” in September, let’s make it a “Food First Sunday”
We invite everyone to bring a cans of food to donate to the St. Vincent De Paul and Cape
View Elementary food pantries. If each person brings just one item of nonperishable
food to our alter on September 4, we will be able to provide nearly 25 large brown bags
of food for our neighbors who do not have enough to eat.
Our “Food First Sunday” food drive will kick start our ongoing efforts to keep the pan-
tries stocked. Donations can be made on any Sunday by leaving your items in the collec-
tion cart in the narthex. Protein items are always needed, particularly canned stew,
small canned hams, and peanut butter. And you don’t need to buy the jumbo sizes! Be-
cause the items are packaged at the pantries for distribution to needy families, regular-
sized containers are preferred.
Your small donation of an item of food makes a huge difference in the lives around us!

Riverside joined Family Promise three years ago. In that time, we have made a large
impact on ending family homelessness and joblessness through Family Promise of Bre-
vard. Riverside should be energized by what we see unfolding every day, knowing
that with its support, we always have what we need when we need it, because we are
patient visionaries with the commitment towards ending these family circumstances.
In 2017, we will concentrate recruiting new volunteers. That, once again, requires your
help. I challenge you to church friends or neighbors to join us. Have them agree to ac-
company you to our December hosting of families as observers. Let them see for
themselves the importance of what little we do in providing shelter, food and bed. Let
them see there are rewards to hosting, listening, and interacting with families. Let
them see how comfortable we make our living quarters. Let them see our chaper-
ones' accommodations. Let them see a schedule and how little time is necessary from
our volunteers. Let them see our community's love and friendship.
If you have any questions: call Dick Gerhardt 784-1132.
Operation Christmas Child
It is that time of year again to fill a shoebox. For 20 years Samaritan’s Purse has delivered shoe-
box gifts packed by caring people like you to hurting children around the world. Through the
generosity of Riverside members over the years, boys and girls all over the world will smile and
their hearts will be open to hearing of the saving grace of God. Please look for the Operation
Christmas Child boxes and information in the Fellowship Hall during September. The final day to
bring the boxes back is November 20th. Thank you for sharing gifts and the word of our Lord.
Cliff Schmitt and “J.B.” Olds
