American-Marsh Pumps, one of the oldestpump lines in America, are pump productssteeped in heritage. Since 1873, the American-Marsh line of pumps has withstood the test oftime. During the last 130 years, over 100 vari-eties of pumps have been designed and built. From steam pumps to centrifugal pumps,American-Marsh pumps have been built tomeet the ever changing requirements of society.Over the last century through continuous prod-uct development, more American-Marsh mod-els have been retired than most other pumpmanufacturers have ever produced. Hundredsof thousands of pumps have been made, alldesigned for longevity, allowing many of themto continue servicing customers over 50 years. All of our pumps have three superior charac-
teristics; Design, Performance, and Durability. Our engineering department, which includes anin-house pattern shop, designs each pump sothat installation and maintenance is easy. Ourperformances are engineered to meet or beatthe competition in each category. For 130years, American-Marsh Pumps products have

Casing: The casing is of high tensile cast iron or otherspecified material. It is of the volute type, split on the hor-izontal center line with the suction and discharge flangesas well as the bearing brackets (HH & HJ) cast integralwith the lower half. Removal of the upper half of the cas-ing gives complete access to the interior of the pump with-out disturbing the piping connections or pump alignment.Ample wall thickness provides a generous allowance forcorrosion. HT models have water passages lined withporcelain enamel, shall be free of blow holes, sand holesand other detrimental defects, and shall be accuratelymachined and fitted.
Stage Arrangement: HH, HJ & OSMH models havestage arrangements such that each stuffing box is onlyunder first stage pressure. Furthermore, the maximumpressure difference across any of the stage pieces, separat-ing the impeller chambers, is reduced to that of the firststage. Impellers are opposed or back-to-back to eliminateend thrust and volutes are staggered to balance radialthrust. This hydraulic balancing of all radial and end thrustis obtained without the use of troublesome balancing disksor other devices that reduce efficiency. Thus the efficiencyis inherently high and sustained over long periods of time.HT models feature high efficiency, diffuser bowls thattransition flow from one stage to the next. Impellers arestacked in the same direction and can achieve very highheads while maintaining high efficiency.
Impellers: The impellers are of the single suction, enclosed, non-overloading type. They are placed back toback to balance the end thrust without the use of extraseal rings or other balancing devices. Impellers are made ofbronze, cast iron, or other specified material, machinedand polished all over, and dynamically and hydraulicallybalanced. They are keyed to the shaft and secured by locknuts.
Casing and Impeller Wear Rings: The casing andimpeller wear rings are of bronze, cast iron or other speci-fied material. Both rings have large wearing surfaces toreduce leakage losses. HH case wear rings are of thelabyrinth type with the diameter at wearing surfacereduced to a minimum, and are firmly secured in the cas-ing by dowel pins. HK & OSMH casing wear rings areheld rigidly in the casing by a tongue and groove fit withoffset on the horizontal centerline – thus preventing rota-tion without using holding pins or screws.
Shaft: The shaft is of 420 stainless steel, ground to accu-rate dimensions and polished to a smooth surface. It isdesigned for extra stiffness to avoid all critical speeds inoperation, and is threaded for bearing and lock nuts. Onpumps with more than two impellers, impeller keys arestaggered to prevent uneven stresses and unbalance.
Shaft Sleeves: The shaft sleeves are of bronze, or otherspecified material, extending from the impeller hub
through the stuffing boxes and secured to the shaft bytwin positive locknuts. Stuffing boxes prevent leakagealong the shaft while allowing freedom for the sleeve toexpand independently of the shaft expansion.
Stuffing Boxes: The stuffing boxes are extra deep, designed for six rings of packing in addition to the lanternring. Under each stuffing box is a drip pocket with tappeddrain outlet. HK and OSMH models are arranged forwater cooling and are extra deep. Throat bushings protectmain casing from wear. Lantern rings are provided within-and-out connections provided for both boxes to permitthe circulation of sealing water or a lubricating mediumwhen required by special service conditions. A wide vari-ety of mechanical seals are available upon request.
Glands: The glands are of the hinge bolt type, split foreasy removal and fastened together with capscrews.
Bearings: On HH & HJ models both the inboard andoutboard ball bearings are of the single row, deep groovetype, precision grade, with cartridge mounting, permittingthe removal of the shaft without exposing or disturbingthe bearing assembly. They are of extra large capacity forboth radial and thrust loads, and are locked to the shaftwith nut and positive nut lock. The outboard bearing isconfined rigidly in the bearing housing to take the endthrust, while the inboard bearing is set with sufficientclearance to allow for shaft expansion. Each bearing isdesigned for grease lubrication and is provided with awater slinger to prevent leakage from the stuffing box intothe bearing. A grease zerk fitting is furnished for eachbearing. HT models feature a grease lubricated, doublerow thrust bearing with an integral, single lip oil seal. HK& OSMH bearings are of the double row type with posi-tive ring oiling. The inboard bearing carries the radial loadand is free to move in either direction. The outboardbearing is of the angular contact, duplex type to carryeither radial or unbalanced thrust loads and maintainimpellers in their proper positions.
Bearing Housings: HH & HJ models are of the car-tridge type and designed to be removed from the pumpwith the rotating assembly. HT models feature a doublerow, thrust bearing that withstands all thrust generated bythe bowl assembly. HK & OSMH bearings are split on thehorizontal centerline, similar to the pump casing, so thatthe housings need not be detached from the lower part ofthe casing when removing the rotating element. The cool-ing water jacket extends around the entire circumferenceof the bearing housing so that cooling is uniform and nodamaging stresses are set up as might be the case whenthe cooling jacket is only around one-half the circumfer-ence as used in older designs. No gaskets are required, socooling water cannot leak into oil reservoirs and bearingreplacements will always fit.
