His quick fascination with America’s Oldest City inspired Flagler to create a travel destination for the rich and famous of his time. He financed Hotels, Churches and the foundation of resort commerce. With the exten- sion of the train lines for efficient transportation, a boon began to hit St. Augustine. In 1895 a wooden bridge was erected to allow transportation from the mainland to Anastasia Island. In 1904 the bridge was renovated to allow the elec- tric trolley. In 1925 the decision was made to build a Mediterranean style bascule bridge. It had long flowing arches, tile-topped towers and marble lion statues were present- ed. In early 1927 the bridge was open to traffic. However, salt water, cars and other environmental pollutants took their combined toll on the bridge. Shrimp & Scallop Ceviche1 lb peeled and deveined shrimp1 lb scallops4 ea diced tomatoes½ cup lime juice1 ea sliced red onion1 bunch chopped scallions2 ea diced jalapeno (remove the seeds!)4 ea cloves minced garlic1 ea diced mango½ bunch chopped cilantro2 ea julienne of carrots (or use baby carrots, at least 12)

4 ounces diced hearts of palmSlice the shrimp in half lengthwise, combine with the

remaining ingredients and let them marinate for atleast 4 hours or overnight if you have time.

If you are in a hurry, blanch the shrimp and scallops inseasoned boiling water for 1 minute. Remove fromthe water, combine with the rest of the ingredients,let marinate for at least one hour.

Serve over a piece of romaine lettuce either in a shallowbowl, or salad plate. If you use the salad plate drainthe marinade.

In 2006 the decision was made to save the beautifulspan. A commemoration ceremony was held Friday,May 26, 2006 at 10:00 am, and the bridge was closed.Every detail was attended to. Great expense andpainstaking stereomicroscopial analysis were per-formed to identify the original color of the bridge.

On Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 10:00 am a com-memorative ceremony of the bridge reopening washeld. As spectators looked on the first pedestrians andautos were allowed over the bridge, and the bridge wasagain open.
