Sprinkled throughout this Sponsorship Prospectus are quotations from those close to the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. We asked them “What’s Your Ode to Joy” as it relates to their participation with the Orchestra or the way

that music has enriched their lives. We encourage the full Harrisburg community to share with us their own Ode to Joy through our website: www.InTheKeyOfWe.com or by tagging their submissions on social media with #OdeToJoyHBG

2020 marks three significant anniversaries for the Harrisburg Symphony: the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra’s 90th season, the Harrisburg Symphony

Society’s 30th season, and Stuart Malina’s 20th season as music director.

The Harrisburg Symphony is among the oldest regional orchestras in the country. Since its humble beginnings 90 years ago, the Orchestra has evolved into a dynamic force that is now a pillar of Central Pennsylvania’s cultural life. Our 90th anniversary season will be a grand celebration of our orchestra and our community.

The Harrisburg Symphony Society was established as the orchestra’s volunteer fund-raising auxiliary in 1989 and has since raised nearly $2 million for the Orchestra! We thank and salute the Symphony Society as they celebrate their 30th anniversary season.

My 20th anniversary as the orchestra’s music director makes the 2019-20 season very special to me. We have been, and continue to be, a driving force in the renaissance of our city and our region. It has been a 20-year joy ride for me. I hope you’ll join us in celebrating these three anniversaries on 4-4-20!”

MAESTRO STUART MALINAMUSIC DIRECTOR

WHY IS THE HARRISBURG SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA SO EXCITED ABOUT 2020?

Such milestones deserve to be celebrated amongst the community as a whole. The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra wouldn’t be as strong as we are today without the support of our entire region. For that, we are forever grateful and want to spread our joy and thanks through the unique power of music. We have a dedicated determination to share the Symphony with those who may never have had the chance to enjoy it. We wish to celebrate our anniversaries with the themes of community, unity and brotherly love. And so, we present an event unlike any other that this region has seen before.

FARM SHOW COMPLEX | NEW HOLLAND ARENA

Music in the Key of We – An Anniversary Celebration of Community will be an inspiring and unifying event. The celebration will be promoted and priced to be attractive and accessible

($20 general admission) to all. With the help of our sponsors, we plan to extend complimentary tickets to many nonprofits, especially aimed at providing young people the opportunity to attend.

This further promotes our goal of creating an event that is inclusive in unifying community members from all walks of life. It will be as representative of our region as it will be beautiful to behold.

The event will be held within the 7,500-seat New Holland Arena at the Farm Show Complex, a deliberate decision to step outside the typical orchestral venue. Our aim is to have both musicians and patrons forgo their usual formal attire for a more relaxed and casual appeal.

The inclined arena-style seating will be home to our general admission guests. On the floor-level, just feet from the stage, our sponsors and other table-seated guests will watch the show. After the concert has ended, the floor-level will be transformed into the “Afterglow Party” featuring buffet dinner stations, bars, a silent auction, and dancing to a live DJ.

To promote our goal of inclusion and to spread the joy of the Symphony to those who may not have had the opportunity to experience live symphonic music before, we are extending invitations and complimentary tickets to many charitable organizations within the Harrisburg region. We will be eager to learn about organizations that are close to our many sponsors, so that we may further extend our reach.

Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, with its famous choral finale set to Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy,” celebrates the universal brotherhood of mankind. Regarded by many as the greatest symphony ever written, it stands as one of mankind’s greatest cultural achievements. Perhaps the most beloved and profoundly unifying of all classical works, the Ninth has been performed countless times, notably at important commemorations like the fall of the Berlin Wall and the centenary of the end of World War I. The Ninth Symphony is unique in its message and ability to celebrate the best in each of us, the inner beauty and humanity that bind us all together.

“…Whoever has been lucky enough to become a friend to a friend… let him join our songs of praise! Yes, and anyone who can call one soul his own on this earth!”

“The joy - I arrived in Harrisburg with a 3 month contract to play at the Holiday Inn Town over 40 years ago. In the time that has passed during my stay in the lovely Susquehanna Valley, I have been able to grow as a musician with great musical comrades and a faithful audience of many "friends of jazz." The Harrisburg Symphony and their incredibly capable and dedicated leader, Stuart Malina, have been supportive of my music and have afforded me many opportunities to write and perform on the highest level. I look forward to this special performance of "Music in the Key of We" as an effort to unite our community and inspire the audience to become more open and aware of the ties between us all. My JOY is for the community that welcomed me, the family and friends who have made this existence meaningful, and the music in all of us."

“My ode to joy is really this uniquely human activity that we call music,

in all its infinite variety and its unpredictability from one performance

to the next. I know that when I come to the Forum on Saturday night, in most cases

I’ve heard the music before, the musicians of the HSO have probably played the music before,

and Stuart has conducted it before. In many cases I’ve heard recordings of the music by the finest

orchestras in the world. But I know that, in spite of the familiarity of the music at hand, that particular performance will be unique. The music, even if it’s

100 or 200 years old, has never been played in quite the same way. And if I come in the next day, on Sunday afternoon, it will be different yet again.

This, to me, is why we perform this music, that spark of inspiration that animates and brings to

life each performance.”

With great pleasure, we’d like to thank our graciously committed sponsors:

“We have a deep appreciation for the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra and the incredible richness it adds to our community. Our region is a great place to live and work because of the arts, and the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra has been a leading contributor to our vibrant culture for 90 years. And so it is with great joy that we proudly support this Anniversary Celebration and invite others to take part in a true community celebration. The Harrisburg Symphony is a real treasure that, with everyone’s support, will help Central Pennsylvania thrive and grow for the next 90 years.”

“My Ode to Joy covers many: Stuart Melina, Jeff Woodruff, the Harrisburg Symphony Society, and of course the Orchestra. I was instrumental in helping to hire Stuart Melina who is a phenomenal conductor, a wonderful pianist and a kind man. Jeff Woodruff, the Executive Director does a marvelous job and we are all proud of him. Without the Society I don’t know where we would be. At the top, is the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. They are wonderful and amazing instrumentalists. You don’t need to go to New York, Boston, Chicago, or anywhere else to enjoy a good orchestra… That makes me feel as though we hired the right people.”

“When Stuart Malina approached me about putting together and rehearsing a choir of several hundred singers, I was immediately excited about the idea. Partnering with the HSO and Stuart is always a joy, and this anniversary celebration will be an extraordinary event. The idea of bringing the choral community together in a massed choir, singing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, will celebrate our unified commitment to music and to our community. “Ode to Joy,” for me, will be the sounds of that choir, coming together to celebrate our common love of music.”

Businesses aiming to recruit a talented workforce often set up offices based on the location’s cultural opportunities. As noted by corporate executives, we provide a legitimate draw in the recruitment of managerial talent to our region by complementing our community’s economic development with a robust cultural scene.

One of my great joys is living minutes away from museums, theater and performances by the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. I have season tickets for both the Masterworks and Pops Series and look forward to sharing Sunday afternoon performances with family and friends. The Orchestra contributes so much to the quality of life in Central Pennsylvania.

I enjoy attending performances by the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra, too. Not to be missed is their HO HO HO concert held in December at Strawberry Square. The young musicians are so excited to perform for an audience what they’ve been learning at Monday night rehearsals. It brings back memories of my own children and the instruments they played (trombone and saxophone) during their school years.”

“It is an honor for Messiah Lifeways to support the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra on this momentous occasion. I believe music is a gift that has the ability to transcend and unite people regardless of where they are on life’s journey. Its power does not fade as we age, but rather grows, transporting us through time and evoking memories long thought forgotten. My ‘ode to joy’ is one that empowers older adults to fully embrace life with purpose, zest, and faith-filled living. For many, music plays an important role in realizing that vision.”

Our Masterworks and Capital BlueCross Pops concerts bring music lovers of all ages to our city who, in turn, patronize local restaurants and stores.

“Through music, we help students become the best version of themselves. We nurture their passion for music and help them develop the skills – self-worth, discipline, goal-setting, empathy – necessary to lead successful, community-focused lives. That’s the real joy of what we do – helping students discover how they can use their passion and talents to contribute to their community.”

MARK HUNSBERGER DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

HARRISBURG SYMPHONY ASSOCIATION

We provide essential educational outreach and programming across the region. The Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra, founded in 1954, is one of the oldest youth symphonies in the country. Both the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Symphony’s school-based initiatives bring achievement and learning to countless children.

WE INVEST IN OUR KIDSE D U C A T I O N

“This piece takes a new meaning today because it is ultimately about pure, authentic, genuine, brotherly love in people. And I don’t think the world ever needed as much of this as it does now. So it is incredibly timely and rings as true today as it did when Beethoven wrote when Europe was in the midst of wars and conflict because today you’ll look at the news and you’ll see all of the strife and anger, and we need love, we need community, we need a sense of cooperation. This is probably one of the highest forms of cooperation when 90 people or 100 people get together and make music together on that level. The audience is a part of that as well because music is about communication; it is about giving and receiving, so when you have a community that is ready to receive something like this and enthusiastic group of musicians who are ready to give that, it is a very, very special experience.”

WE ADD VIBRANCYC O M M U N I T Y

As Harrisburg’s only professional orchestra, we are an essential pillar of the arts community in Central Pennsylvania. We contribute mightily to the vibrancy of the community as a whole. By providing dynamic musical entertainment, we directly impact our community’s quality of life and help make this area an especially attractive place to live.
