Background of Professor George Fitzgerald Smoot

Professor George Fitzgerald Smoot is the Director of the Berkeley Center for CosmologicalPhysics who was awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics `for the discovery of the blackbody

form and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation.

In April 1992 Professor Smoot made the announcement that the team he led had detected thelong sought variations in the early universe that had been observed by the COBE DMR. NASAs

COBE (Cosmic Background Explorer) satellite mapped the intensity of the radiation from the

early Big Bang and found variations so small they had to be the seeds on which gravity workedto grow the galaxies, clusters of galaxies and clusters of clusters that are observed in the universe

today. These variations are also relics of creation.

As team leader of the group that designed and studied information from one of the three

instruments on the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite, Professor Smoot is responsible for the

best picture of the early universe available to science. Using instruments carried by balloon, on

U-2 spy planes, and finally by satellite, Professor Smoot has spent the last twenty yearsexamining the faint but ever present microwave radiation remnants from the time when light first

became visible in the universe, 300,000 years after the big bang and 15 billion years ago.

Professor Smoot continues research in cosmology and is involved in the Planck and SNAPmissions. The Planck mission is the third generation mission to exploit the CMB fluctuations

discovered by COBE DMR. SNAP is a mission to understand the Dark Energy causing the

current expansion of the universe to accelerate.

George Smoot received his Bachelor degrees in mathematics and physics in 1966 and a Ph.D. in

Physics from MIT in 1970. He has been at the University of California Berkeley and the

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 1970 and is the author of more than 200 science

papers and of the popularized scientific book `Wrinkles in Time that elucidates cosmology andthe COBE discovery. His honours include the NASA Medal for Exceptional Science

Achievement, the Kilby Award, the Lawrence Award and the Einstein Medal.

Overview of the Lecture Series, Contemplating The Birth Of Universe by Professor

    George Fitzgerald

Using our most advanced techniques and instruments, we sift through relic clues and evidence tounderstand the events surrounding the birth and subsequent development of the Universe. A

precision inspection and investigation of the Cosmic Scene along with careful analysis, discussion and computer modeling have allowed us to determine what happened over billions ofyears with amazing certainty and accuracy. Some of our findings are surprising and even provide

    shocking twists of plot.

There remain even more mysteries to be solved. In spite of that, we can tell the tale of thecreation and history of the Universe shows key supporting evidence, some of it from very early

times including using the cosmic background light to provide a direct image of the embryo

    universe.

Organizer : Engineering Education Technical Divison, IEM &Centre for Stormwater & Geohazard Management

In conjunction with the IEM Engineering Week this year, the Engineering and Education

Technical Division together with Centre for Stormwater and Geohazard Management hasorganized a half-day Seminar and Exhibition on Engineering Awareness: Consider Every

Option (CEO) Engineering Go For It. The talk was delivered by Assoc Prof Ir Dr Lariyah

Mohd Sidek and Engr Jaya Nadarajah from Engineering Education Technical Division. The

main objective of this seminar is to disseminate and create awareness amongst secondarystudents on the engineering career and to encourage high school students to consider engineering

    as a fascinating career option.

The major focus of the seminar is to motivate a selected group of Secondary schools students

who have demonstrated interest and potential for a high level of achievement in science andmathematics to pursue careers in engineering or related fields. This activity provides exposure to

various career options was carried out in three forms, guest lectures, games and exhibition.

Amongst topics highlighted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ir. Lariyah Mohd Sidek during the talk areacademic requirements for becoming an engineer, Awareness of the career options available in

various engineering disciplines, motivation for students to consider engineering as an option tostudy and role of engineers in the future. Talk by Engr Jaya Nadarajah highlighted more on his

experience as an engineer. There is also Q&A session after the lecture session, and the students

shows interests in engineering career as they ask a lot of questions regarding engineeringprofession to both speakers.

Second activity after the lecture session is engineering games participated by the students.

During this session, the students have two tasks to be completed in group of which finally theyhave to come out with two models that have engineering elements, which are floating boats

model using clay and build a long and stable bridge using straw. Their models were then judges

by Engr Jaya Nadarajah. Five best groups for each model have been awarded a hamper.

This activity helps to educate young generation about engineering profession, and it is our role as

an engineer to actively develop, support and promote programs which initiate and expandawareness on engineering at all educational levels.

Presenter : Miss Faizah Che RosTitle : Dam Break Analysis for Hydroelectrik Dam : Case Study of Kenyir Dam,

Terengganu, Malaysia Faizah Che Ros, Lariyah Mohd Sidek et. al.

2-D Hydrodynamic Simulations of a High Resolution Terrain Data Applied to

Kenyir Power Station, Terengganu, Malaysia Faizah Che Ros, Lariyah Mohd

    Sidek et. al

Dams have long been acknowledged for providing electricity which is the form of renewable

energy, for flood protection, and for making water available for agriculture and human needs.

However, the huge amount of energy stored behind the dam results in serious danger to societyin case of dam failure. When a dam is breached, catastrophic flooding will occur as the

impounded water escapes through the breach and flows into the downstream valley which maycause great devastation in terms of lives lost as well as property damages. The main purpose of

the study was to establish dam breach characteristics in prediction of Kenyir outflow hydrograph.

Kenyir dam break modelling due to a breach were performed under two scenarios namelyProbable Maximum Flood (PMF) scenario and Clear Day scenario. Froehlich and MacDonald &

Langridge-Monopolis equations were used in the determination of the dam breach parameters.

With the obtained outflow hydrograph, it is possible to see the negative effects by routing it at

    the downstream. In 2nd

paper, a floodplain simulation of pre-event Kenyir dam failure inTerengganu, Malaysia is presented. A 2-D flow model; MIKE 21 was used which incorporates

high resolution terrain data (LiDAR). LiDAR data has a contour resolution of 0.2 m in thevertical axis covered around 650 km2of Kuala Terengganu town. With the obtained results, it is

possible to develop inundation maps depicting the water depth, velocity and affected zones,

which will be very useful in development of Emergency Action Plan (EAP) as well as predictingboth life and property loss in a case of dam failure.
