    ThismethodisusedinSULZER2strokemarineengineswherethebearingsshellisremovedalongwiththekeep(thebearingshellislinedwiththekeep).Afterthatabridgeisfittedoverthetopofjournalpin,fromporttostarboard,makingabridgeoverthecrankshaftwithtwoendssupportedonthecrossgirder.

    Asimpleverniertypedepthgaugeistheninsertedintheholeprovidedonthebridgeandthescaleofdepthgaugeisrestedonthecrankshaftpin.Thetotaldepthonthescaleismeasuredandcomparedwiththepreviousreadingandthereadinginthemanualforcalculatingtheweardownofbearing.

    InoldmodelSULZERengines,acollarisprovidedinthebearingshellalongwithasmallhole.Thuswithoutremovingthekeep,thebridgeisfittedadjacenttothekeepandthedepthgaugeisusedfromtheholeprovidedintheshelltomeasuretheshellweardown.

    point.Also,inplaceofdepthgauge,afeelergaugeisusedtomeasuretheclearancebetweenthejournalpintopandthebridgebottom.Thebridgeusedhereisdifferentintermsofheightandthegapbetweenthepinandthebridgeisverylessascomparedtothatofthebridgeusedintheabovementionedmethod.

    3)TelescopicorSwedishFeelerGauge

    InengineslikeMANB&W,thisisthemostcommonmethodusedtomeasurethebearingclearanceofthetopshell.Inthismethodthereisnoneedtoremoveanyconnectionorkeepformeasuringtheclearance.

    Thetelescopicgaugeisinsertedbetweenthegapofthecrankwebandthebearingkeep.Whenthetipreachestheshelltop,thefeelerisinsertedbetweentheshellandthepintochecktheclearance.
