Fourth Sunday of Easter “I am the Good Shepherd, and I know Mine and Mine know Me!”
PARISH NEWS AND EVENTS
Jesus Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed! This Sunday’s reading con-
tains a wonderful promise, a promise that the Lord Jesus states as a fact in
the verse cited above. That the Lord Jesus knows us we assume as a giv-
en; after all, what or who would the omniscient Lord not know? But
when He also states, “Mine know Me,” that’s where it gets exciting! When He rose from the dead, everything changed, including our ability to
more personally experience His reality in our lives. As you know, when
the Scriptures talk about knowing someone, there are several different
ways in which that can be understood. For example, to know someone
can be understood as to know about someone, to be familiar with who
they are. It can also mean to have an actual relationship with them. And in
the Scripture, it can refer to the most personal, intimate union possible.
This is the first way in which to know someone is mentioned in the Scrip-
tures, Genesis 4:1: “Adam knew Eve.” This does not mean that he simply
knew about her, nor does it mean that they were just acquainted. What it
means is demonstrated by the next clause: “and she conceived….” The Greek verb used in John 10 for “to know” is the same Greek verb that the
Septuagint (the Greek version of the Scriptures used by the Jews) uses in
Genesis 4. More importantly, the same verb is used in the same grammati-
cal sense as is used in John, both of the Lord Jesus knowing us and we
knowing Him. Greek is a very rich language with amazing ways of con-
veying different verbal senses; for example you can use the verb “to
know” and express it in a way that conveys, “I wish to know” or “I would
like to know.” You can also express it in a way that simply conveys a
statement of the actual present reality. That’s how it is used here: Jesus
knows us and we know Him. Obviously, when the verb is used in Gene-
sis, there is an aspect of Adam’s knowing Eve that is intimate, physical, and marital, which is in some ways different than how we know Jesus and
He knows us.
However, our great mystics remind us that the level of union that the
Lord Jesus calls us to is also referred to as spiritual marriage, with the clear
connotation that the union with the Lord Jesus that we are called to far
transcends simply knowing about Him, or just being an acquaintance of
His. It speaks of an actual, experiential union with Him. “Mine know
Me,” He states. The obvious invitation implicit in that expression is one
we should take advantage of, especially during this Holy Season of Easter.
If we are not sure what that means or how to go about it, the Church has a
rich mystical tradition of great men and women of God who knew Him well and wrote down for us how each and every one of us can grow in that
union with Him ourselves. During this Holy Season, there is a specific
grace of deeper union that rests on this time that we would do well to take
advantage of. We can do that by familiarizing ourselves more deeply with
just what it is we are being called to. A way to do that is to take advantage
of those mystics’ writings, even as Pope St. John Paul the Great urged us
to do in his Millennial letters. Three books that can be very helpful for this
include The Interior Castle by St. Teresa of Jesus, which is probably the
best and most comprehensive explanation; The Practice of the Presence of
God by Br. Lawrence of the Resurrection, and Hinds Feet on High Places
by Hannah Hurnard. The last book is this aspect of the mystical life pre-sented as an allegory based on Song of Songs. It can be a very helpful
beginners’ book—I re-read it regularly.
We spent the season of Lent preparing our hearts for the Sacred Tridu-
um. Now the Lord Jesus invites us to pay equal attention to the gifts and
graces of the Holy Season of Easter, that we might experience more deep-
ly, each one of us, the union with Him that His Resurrection enables us to
have! Even so, come, Lord Jesus, come! — Fr. Ed Fride

Ed or a deacon know in person before the weekend Mass you are
