To make the booklets, use 4 half-sheets of paper, cut hamburger styleBooklet insidesLeft side style

Right side style

To make the shutters, use 4 half-sheets of paper, cut hamburger style. Then fold them into shutters. Leave shutters as are on 2 of them (for right side booklets) and cut into 4 pieces on the other 2 for left side booklets). Wait to label (see next 2 slides)Page 4 Heart Structuresshutter labelingChambers

Valves

I chose to use pink/red to color code right side structures and blue for right ones. That is optional, but encouraged to show which structures hold oxygenated blood.Page 5 Heart StructuresVeinsArteries

ChambersHow many? FOUR (in humans)JobHold blood

AtriaEtymology: from Latinatrium"central court or main room of an ancient Roman house, room which contains the hearth http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=atriumHow many? TWOJobReceive blood

Right atriumJobReceives blood from whole body (blood that lacks oxygen)

Left atriumJobReceives blood from lungs (that picked up oxygen)

VentriclesEtymology: From Latin word meaning belly, they make up most of the open/hollow portion of the heartJobPush blood out of heart (surrounded by muscle to help squeeze it out)

Right ventricleJobSend blood to lungs (less muscle needed because lungs are right next to the heart!)sends it there to get oxygen

Left ventricleJobSend blood to WHOLE BODY to deliver oxygen and nutrients

ValvesHow many? FOURJobPrevent backflow of blood

Go here for info about valves and a good video about why they are necessary

Tricuspid ValveEtymology: Tri means 3 and cusp means pointsJobAllows blood to flow from RA to RV and not to flow back into RA

Pulmonary ValveEtymology: From Latin pulmo, meaning lungsblood passing through this valve is headed to the lungs!JobAllows blood to flow from RV into pulmonary artery and not flow back into RV

Bicuspid (Mitral) ValveEtymology: Bi means 2 and cusp means pointsJobAllows blood to flow from LA to LV and not to flow back into LA

Aortic ValveEtymology: From Latin to raiseJobAllows blood to flow from LV into aorta and not flow back into LV

21VeinsJobCarry blood TO HEARTWhile MOST carry blood lacking oxygen, not ALL do, so that is NOT a defining feature of veins

Vena CavasJobCarry blood to the RIGHT SIDE of the heartSUPERIOR (meaning above carries it from the upper bodyarms and head)INFERIOR (meaning below carries it from the lower bodyabdomen and legs)

Pulmonary VeinsJobCarry blood from lungs to LA (remember, pulmonary means lungs and veins come TO THE heart) Whats strange?THEY ARE THE ONLY VEINS THAT CARRY BLOOD WITH OXGYEN

Right pulmonary vein#4Left pulmonary vein#6

Pulmonary ArteriesJobCarry blood to lungs from RV (remember, pulmonary means lungs and arteries lead FROM THE heart) Whats strange?THEY ARE THE ONLY ARTERIES THAT CARRY BLOOD LACKING OXGYEN

Right pulmonary artery#1Left pulmonary artery#3

AortaJobCarries blood leaving heart to whole body (branches into many smaller arteries to do so)

Veins vs. ArteriesVeinsMust prevent blood from backing upHave tiny valves

ArteriesMust withstand high pressureHave thick walls

Heart DissectionCan you use what youve learned to interpret a REAL heart?? (this goes onto panel 6)
